The Browns are expected to reach out to the Raiders regarding the availability of edge rusher Khalil Mack, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.
Mack is currently engaged in a contract dispute with Oakland, one that’s expected to last into the regular season. One of the NFL’s best pass-rushers, Mack is scheduled to earn $13.846MM in 2018 before hitting free agency next spring.
The Raiders’ asking price for Mack is believed to start with two first-round picks, but it’s unclear if any club is willing to meet that price. While teams have inquired on Mack, and offers have been coming in, Oakland has yet to make a trade. The Jets, for one, are known to be interested in acquiring Mack.
Cleveland already boasts one excellent pass-rusher in Myles Garrett, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 draft. But adding a talent like Mack would give the club a truly elite presence on both sides of its defensive line. And Cleveland, which has $61MM in available cap space, has more than enough funds to work out an extension with Mack.
Mack, 27, has been a wrecking ball since entering the league as a first-round pick in 2014. A three-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro, Mack has totaled 40.5 sacks over his first four NFL seasons. In 2017, Pro Football Focus graded Mack as the NFL’s seventh-best edge defender.
LOL. No chance Mack agrees to an extension to spend the next 4-6 years in Cleveland. I needed a good laugh. Thank you
Good point. It makes me think that Oakland won’t budge. Any team with high round 1 pick(s) would have to agree with Mack to a contract. Any team that wins won’t have the resources to convince Oakland.
People said the same thing about Jarvis Landry.
Jarvis Landry is not even close to the same level as Mack. You’re comparing a slot receiver who averaged like 7 YPC to a defensive player of the year and guy who gets 10-15 sacks a season. Much more valuable and he will get paid as such. He will have his choice next season on where he wants to play for 20+M per. It’ll be with a contender.
Name a contender with $20 MM/ yr in cap space that can offer an extension.
Green Bay. All it takes is them to trade someone like Clay Matthews and you have yourself the capital to do that move.
So one team? With 1, the need, 2, the draft capital and 3 the cap space. Oh and they have to move a franchise icon to facilitate the move. I’m sure they’re willing to send them both 1st rounders too so they can outbid…?
Different positions have different values, true. But a guy who averaged 100 catches per season the last 4 years is extremely valuable. If the offense can’t keep moving the chains, the defense gets worn out and tired real quick.
Oh, and I meant to add that your statement of Landry not being even close to the same level as Mack is pretty dumb.
Awesome you still were able to throw in the NY reference again
Who isn’t interested?
No way you give up that draft capital without an extension in place. Unless you’re Cleveland. Dorsey isn’t as dumb as the previous regime I would hope.
They did exactly that w Landry. Otherwise I agree w you. The raiders will need Mack to cooperate in negotiations of a contract. If he doesn’t want to go to the browns I guess he can wait for the next team willing to extend him.
Landry cost a 4th and a 7th… if they didn’t resign him it wouldn’t cost them that much.
If you are going to trade a 1st plus, you get the extension (Aaron Donald money) done before you make the deal.
Mary Kay has been snorting cosmetics again.
Browns probably send Ogbah and then probably 1 first rounder and another draft pick. Won’t be two first rounders if the browns are the trade partners… If the browns pull off this trade I would be surprised, on paper, the defense would be a top 5 unit if the secondary shapes up and the front 7 has to be considered one of the best… Raiders are crazy, I would sign Mack to a big deal and he would be a franchise player. No way would I even think about trading this guy!
With the ridiculous deal Aaron Donald just signed, I don’t know if it’s possible for Oak Vegas to afford him.

Not like they’re gonna lose more games.
