As expected, Seahawks safety Earl Thomas is not reporting to training camp as he continues to demand either a contract extension or a trade, tweets Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
Although the Seahawks don’t seem inclined to extend Thomas’ contract at this time, that doesn’t mean Seattle isn’t interested in a long-term deal down the road, reports Mike Garafolo of NFL.com (video link). The 29-year-old defensive back only has one more season left on his current contract, so the idea of waiting for a fresh pact likely doesn’t hold any appeal.
However, Seattle would prefer that Thomas report to camp before any negotiations take place, a strategy that was used when the Seahawks dealt with fellow safety Kam Chancellor‘s contract last August. The Cowboys, notably, have been viewed as Thomas’ most likely landing spot if he is dealt, and Dallas has discussed acquiring the All-Pro safety in recent months.
Thomas is signed through 2018, when he’ll earn a base salary of $8.5MM and count for $10.4MM on Seattle’s salary cap. That salary is courtesy of a four-year, $40MM extension which Thomas signed in 2014, a deal which now makes him the NFL’s sixth-highest-paid safety in terms of annual value.
No problem. More reps for the younger guys. Earl is under contract. If he wants to lose income or get fined, so be it.
Just another greedy player who knows the end is near. The 40 million isn’t enough? Poor baby. Maybe him and Julio Jones could share rent.
The thing is, this is his third contact. It’s not like he’s coming off a rookie deal. His stance is kind of disingenuous.
I agree his butt is all over the place, first you wanna go to the cowgirls, now the raiders, fine him everyday he don’t show up, Seattle has the leverage.
When you signed deal and you were happy right? But as soon as someone makes more you cry about it?
My cat is the same way.
He wants an extension…does he want more $$? Most Likely as no one wants to be paid less than they currently are. He just wants and extension and I don’t blame him. There are still 3 starting level Safeties on FA right now. I bet all of them when signed get the vet minimum which is far below value for Thomas.
Other teams hand out extensions with one year, even two years, still on a deal, and some of ya’ll have your panties in a twist because a 29-year old six-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro wants an extension with one year left on his deal? It’s not his fault Seahawks management and Pete Carroll haven’t been able to put together a decent offensive line or running game.
And I’ll start complaining about greedy players when some of you start complaining about greedy owners.
Bruh I understand football is a business, but he a clown how he going about it, following Garrett into the locker room begging this man to come get him while he gas a contract with another team!!!! I liked Thomas as a player, but as a person Seattle shouldn’t give him @#%#
