Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett suffered a torn Achilles during a conditioning test, as Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports (via ESPN colleague Josina Anderson on Twitter). Ian Rapoport of NFL.com was the first to report (via Twitter) that Verrett sustained an injury that would likely cost him the season. Injuries have limited Verrett to just five total games over the past two seasons, so this is obviously devastating news for the 27-year-old.
Verrett was a full participant in June’s minicamp and reportedly looked like his old self. The Bolts were cautiously optimistic about Verrett after he flashed the ability that earned him a Pro Bowl nod in 2015.
“We can be real special,” Verrett said recently when asked about the Chargers’ secondary. “I know it’s a tough for the coaches to make a decision on who’s going to go out there, just because of how deep we are. But I think just how tight we are as a group, it’s going to allow us to keep feeding off each other. Everyone’s going be wanting to get better each and every day because you know the guys behind you are going to want to be where you are.”
Without Verrett, the Bolts will lean more heavily on the likes of Casey Heyward, Trevor Williams, and Desmond King. It’s conceivable that they could also explore outside help, such as free agent Bashaud Breeland. Anderson reports that the team is keeping another big name free agent, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, in mind, but that there is no rush to bring DRC in at this time.
Verrett, a 2014 first-round selection, is entering the walk year of his contract. Between his two knee surgeries and this latest setback, Verrett’s future is very much in flux.
Haha, Telesco and John Spanos are the worst. What a waste of 1st round pick. At time of drafting every scout/GM said he was too small and injuries would be a thing with him.
Yeah what clowns for drafting a pro bowl caliber player.
Bradley Roby was available and they chose 5/9 170 pound Verrett. Good call
Yeah… one pro bowl appearance is far more valuable than 4-5 years of a starting caliber cornerback
What does that have to do with anything? You dont know who will have a longer career or do what. Its not that simple. They liked a guy, and they were able to get a pro bowl year out of him. To rip them for that is just wrong
What does it have to do with anything? YOU WERE THE ONE WHO BROUGHT UP THAT HE IS A “PRO BOWL CALIBER PLAYER”… so THAT is what it has to do with it. It’s pretty simple: what is more valuable, one pro bowl season, followed by 3-4 years of not playing at all…. or a reliable starter who gets on the field?
No, there is no crystal ball. There are scouring reports, measurables, injury history reports, projections, etc. You are acting like the injury concern didn’t exist until Verrett was already a pro. WRONG. The injury concerns were there throughout college. Again, they gambled…. the lost. Bad use of first round pick.
Whats with this ripping of the Chargers. Im not even a fan but come on. It was a later 1st rounder who they hit on the player but has been killed by injuries. This was 4 years ago too. Since then they have absolutely nailed 2 first rounders while having the best draft class of 2016. Mike Williams was an absolute bust but they made up for it with the absolute steal of Desmond King. So they have been one of the best draftong teams recently. Again i dont even like the Chargers but the top comment is clearly salty they left SD
Well yeah, people are going to be salty that they left SD… but still, their criticism of some drafts are valid. Not sure your logic holds up… so they can’t be upset about Verrett because he started with a good year and was injured ever since…. but then u say mike Williams was a bust because he was injured his rookie year? So as long as you play your first year, u aren’t a bust? Williams could easily go on to have s more productive career than Verrett.
I actually don’t like several of the chargers recent draft choices…. mike Williams included. Verrett included. Even Derwin James, include him also.
Like the PLAYER and liking the PICK are two very different things… example, Derwin James is probably the 3-4 best player in the whole draft and was a steal at #17 for the chargers. HOWEVER, he is MUCH better suited for strong safety, playing in the box against the run (kam chancellor type)… but the chargers just gave their strong safety Addae a contract extension, paying him starter money. James will be exposed as a “free safety center fielder” in the Gus Bradley system… he isn’t the same type of player as an earl Thomas. So essentially, we used our number one pick in an area (strong safety) where we didn’t really need it.
Love the player. Dislike the pick.
Yeah, no crap!!! Can’t believe they didn’t get the right brand of crystal ball.
Crystal ball isn’t necessary… good scouting, smart decision making… you know… the things they are paid to do. We can say “it’s hindsight”, because we are just fans. We have that luxury. It’s their JOB to get these things right more often than not. And when concerns about Verrett and his ability to stay healthy came out BEFORE the draft, and the chargers used their 1st round pick anyways…. yeah, it’s a mistake. Didn’t need a crystal ball for that. The reports about his previous injuries were there… as were all his size/weight measurables….
There is such a thing as having a bad draft on a talented player..
People are acting like this is all a fluke with Verrett… IT WAS A CONCERN COMING OUT OF COLLEGE. And in college, he was injured.
If there is clear bills of health… food size… no injuries in the past…. etc.. then yes… u need a crystal ball and it’s pure bad luck.
…. this is not the case with Verrett. The concerns were there. The chargers gambled…. they lost.
Such a talented player, just can never stay on the field. Sucks to see a guy lose the season, not as heart wrenching that it’s in the same division as my Broncos though. Get better soon JV
Ha karma is a B for the Dolts. Sadly at the expense of Jason verrett. Out for season again. Meaning he will hv played 5 games in three yrs. I wish nothing but bad luck for the Spanos led Dolts
Some hateful things said on this page. I’m wishing Verette some luck but unfortunately it appears his time as a Charger may be over and known for injuries and unfulfilled promise
Availability is the #1 ability and he hasn’t had it yet. Stinks for the Chargers.
Maybe football isn’t the right choice for this delicate athlete.
Karma sucks. San Diego fan hoping for another 9-7 non playoff season.
