Josh Gordon is dealing with some sort of setback, but the Browns have no plans to move on from him, a source tells Tom Pelissero of NFL.com (on Twitter). On the whole, Pelissero hears that Gordon has had a great offseason while demonstrating that he is “on his way to recovery.”

The circumstances leading to Gordon’s absence from the start of training camp are still not quite clear. The NFL says that Gordon is not under suspension and the wide receiver did not have any slip ups or failed tests, sources tell Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). However, the team has placed him on the NFI list and the league hasn’t explicitly denied that Gordon has run afoul of the substance abuse policy.
Schefter hears Gordon’s “leave is a pro-active, defensive gesture to get extra counseling to try to ensure he does not have any of the setbacks that have marked his past.” Only time will tell whether that’s truly the case, but for now, the Browns remain committed to keeping the talented wide receiver in the fold.
It ain’t easy beating an addiction. Most times the addiction wins, sadly.
I tend to agree. What bothers me is that Goodell boasts about all the programs the NFL has in place to help these guys….but clearly the support that is being offered is far from adequate.
That smells like a relapse to me.
I mean, if all of it solely for weed, it’s such a dog and pony show. The only “addiction” in terms of marijuana is the lifestyle really, nothing chemically addictive. It’s not as much “beating addiction” as it is complying with a stigma.
I thought that for a long time, too. Then Gordon penned that column in the Players Tribune detailing his substance abuse. It went beyond marijuana.
Whoops. It was GQ, not the Players Tribune.
1 in 10 marijuana users meet the criteria for clinical addiction. One of my best friends is one of them. It’s hard to fathom until you see it in person.
Maybe, but marijuana only has negative effects on certain people when used at that level. There are certainly “productive stoners” out there. Not to say that there aren’t unproductive stoners, but I like to think of them as unproductive people who happen to smoke pot. Really thx use is just a tiny part of people’s lives and I still don’t understand why people concern themselves with how it is used by others.
I think your liberal attitude is pretty common…unfortunately. If someone with an alcohol or drug addiction got behind the wheel of a vehicle and killed someone you loved, then you might understand why people concern themselves about how it is used by others.
So are you against alcohol? Asking for a friend.
Like most people, I believe there is rarely a problem with anything if used in moderation. It’s when things become an addiction that the price in human suffering affects all of us either directly or indirectly.
Sigh……….smh.

I miss the days where he would smoke opposing defenses instead of his life away.
Is going into a rehab center a way of getting around a test?
Only on a very short term basis and while your in the center there is someone on the practice field improving his skills and becoming more of a threat to take your job away.
I think it’s a positive thing. He’s serious about changing his old habits and wants to have a full career in the NFL. He’s worked hard to get where he is now, but on the heels of training camp, media attention, ‘hard knocks’ and his first full season back, it’s a lot of pressure and I think he’s simply getting some additional treatment and therapy to help him before it all starts. He’ll be on the field to start the season and back to tearing it up on offence! Good luck to him
Recovery is hard. He didn’t fail any tests but he may have felt the urge to use so more counseling. Relapse happens in recovery. I’m hopeful he’s being proactive. Good luck Josh!
Recovery is simple, if you choose the right source of strength.
Choose Jesus.
Gordon’s addiction to drugs pales in comparison to the Browns addiction to losing. Not sure hanging a crucifix over every cubicle in the locker room will lead to recovery but nothing else has worked, so heck…give it a shot.
No offense, man. But, I don’t come to sports boards to be preached at. Believe what you believe and stop pushing it here. Same goes with all the political bs on this site. Have your convictions and leave it at that.
Religion…lol
He’s getting counseling to prevent another setback. Y’all are so judgemental
