“Nope. Nope. I mean, my role is the same,” McDaniels said. “Look, I think if you’re here, you have an opportunity to work with and for some of the best people in our game. Maybe some of the best people that have ever done those things in our game. So, I feel like it’s a great opportunity to be here in my role.”
It’s been a hectic offseason for Josh McDaniels. The coach committed to becoming the next head coach of the Colts before changing his mind and returning to New England. The offensive coordinator told Patriots.com (via Kevin Patra of NFL.com) that he was “thankful” for the opportunity to rejoin the coaching staff, but he acknowledged that he still has a desire to be a head coach.
“You know, there’s a lot that goes into those things. It can be very complicated,” McDaniels said. “I’ll say this, I’ve stated again and again that I definitely want to be a head coach again. At the same time, I love being here. This is where my kids were born and raised. And we’ve made a pretty special life here and that’s not an easy thing to leave. So, there’s a lot to consider.
“Certainly, leaving here, I don’t take lightly, ever. I would never take that lightly. It was a difficult process and I’m very happy with the decision that we made and grateful to be here and continue working towards the 2018 season.”
McDaniels’ first head coaching stint was a mixed bag, as he went 11-17 in one-plus seasons with the Broncos. Add in his flip-flopping on the Colts head coaching gig and it may be difficult for the coordinator to secure another offer. Of course, there’s some assumption that McDaniels will eventually take over for Bill Belichick in New England, but the 42-year-old said he hadn’t received any guarantees on a future promotion.
It’s going to have to be the Pats to offer if he wants to he a HC again. Can’t imagine many teams would want to make him that offer after how he handled the Colts gig.
Imagine again. Owners of loser teams have short memory’s and deep pockets.
The Patsies can’t guarantee he’d succeed Bellicheat because they can’t overtly violate the Rooney Rule. Though…I don’t think the Patriots have ever had a HC who was a minority.
Coincidentally, Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston just tweeted about that:
“Last night on BST I stated that the Patriots couldn’t elevate Josh McDaniels to head coach without satisfying the Rooney Rule. Wrong. Incorrect. Factually inaccurate. Fake news. A head coach position can be contractually guaranteed.”

The Rooney Rule is completely stupid any way. It doesn’t matter if you are White, Black, Blue, Male, Female, Straight, Gay, if you can coach a team will interview you. The Milwaukee Bucks are interviewing Becky Hammond(first ever full time female assistant in the NBA) on their own terms! Not because they have to because she’s a good coach.
Then how do you explain that 5 of 32 head coaches are African-American, yet the number of AA players is a tick below 70 pct?
Does it matter if they interview minorities really? I mean 90% of the time the team already has in mind who they want to hire. If I’m somebody they’re just bringing in so they don’t violate the Rooney rule and I know I have zero% chance at the job, that would be humiliation for that person. It’s a stupid rule
There is one well-documented case where the Rooney Rule worked as intended. Ironically, it was the Steelers. They were all set to hire Russ Grimm as their HC to replace Bill Cowher, but interviewed Mike Tomlin to satisfy the Rooney Rule. Apparently the Steelers were blown away and had to tell Grimm, “Sorry, but you’re not getting the job after all”.
The point that was made was that if you’re qualified, you get interviewed.
The numbers say otherwise.
The teams just haven’t found an African American coach who as good as a white coach that they wanted to interview. The Rooney Rule also wastes people’s time. The Raiders knew 100% they were going to hire Gruden but they had to waste their time and other people’s time interviewing someone who was without a doubt not getting the job just to comply with the rule.
Can’t they officially designate him a coach in waiting?
You can’t say stuff like “patsies, and Bellicheat” if you don’t know the fricking rules. It’s been reported 1000 times this offseason the rule doesn’t apply if it’s been made clear a certain person will get the job, exact same thing happened with Ozzie in Baltimore.
BB was busted in 2007 and the jealous pieces of trash still can’t move on
Get a life loser
Actually they can. Any team can in that scenario. You are not a smart person.
To be fair, Irsay is kind of a huge ….
To be fair what person who already didn’t have the best first time as a HC want to coach a sorry team like the Colts? When’s the last time they won anything worth noting? Not to mention 0 offensive weapons and a has been QB that might not ever throw a football again
He could’ve declined it instead of accepting the job and scheduling a press conference then backing out.
Wait wasn’t he just HC of the colts? Guess third time is a charm
he backed out.
Yeah that’s right he was only head coach based on his word not his signature.
Hopefully teams take note of what he did to the Colts and he never gets a head coaching job again. So unprofessional and he was terrible last time he was a head coach anyway. Stick to offensive coordinating.
This just in. Josh McDaniels had a change of heart. He “definitely” does not want to be a head coach again”. Lol
Nah McDanields just burned a bridge like some of us do. Family is first. Still, he definitely has the tools to manage any football team in the NFL, no doubt…
