The Texans have signed quarterback Joe Webb, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. It’s a one-year deal worth $1.015MM.
The Texans already had Brandon Weeden and Taylor Heinicke under contract as backups to Deshaun Watson, but Webb gives them an additional option to look at. In theory, Webb could also stick as a special teams contributor and/or a wide receiver given his past experience.
Last year, the 31-year-old appeared in all 16 games for the Bills, plus their Wild Card loss to the Jaguars. He played 39 snaps on offense during the regular season and 278 special teams snaps. His last significant action as a quarterback came in 2010 with the Vikings when he filled in for an injured Brett Favre.
The departure of Webb marks the sixth unrestricted free agent loss for the Bills this offseason.
I liked Webb in Carolina. Glad to see him keep getting opportunities
Lots of comp picks for the Bills next year?
It always amazes me that Joe is still in the league, as a Vikings fan 2010 feels like forever ago.
He and Heinicke are both athletic but Heinicke is the much better quarterback.
You must have forgotten about Webb in Minnesota when he started his Career. The Guy was Electric and actually should have more wins as a Starter and Backup then he does. One game he clearly gets facemasked and fumbles. The facemask was not called so it counts as a loss in the record books. The game I am speaking of was 2011 against the Lions. you are basing your statement on 1 pass by Heinicke. Webb fits the Texans system better then Weeden or Heinicke. Your comment is like saying Nathan Pederman is a much better QB and gives the team a much better chance to win then Tyrod Taylor. Pederman has a lofty 1-1 record as a Starter but that one game was in the Blizzard bowl between Indy and Buffalo which was destined to be a Tie. But goes into OT and McCoy puts the team on his Freaking Back!!!!!.
Actually, I’m basing my statement on what I saw of Heinicke in the 2015 pre-season and what I’ve read about him over the last three years vs. what I remember seeing of Webb back when he was a Viking – including the playoff game but not the 2011 Lions game – and what I’ve read about him. And my comparison is nothing like saying Peterman is better than Taylor, which would be manifestly insane given Taylor’s 43 starts and winning record over the last three years. Taylor is a proven NFL starter, Peterman, Heinicke and Webb are not.
The name Joe Webb just seems like it belongs with Houston to me….although the mental image I get is of a hard scrabble blues player well versed in tradition of legends like Blind Lemon Jefferson and Lightnin’ Hopkins.
