The Seahawks are signing cornerback Dontae Johnson, Mike Garafolo of NFL.com tweets. Johnson becomes the first significant free agent addition at cornerback for the Seahawks this year following an offseason of upheaval all around.
The Seahawks retained corner Justin Coleman this offseason via the second-round tender, but they’re looking to bolster the group after parting ways with Richard Sherman. Needless to say, Johnson is not a one-for-one replacement for Sherman (who is now with Johnson’s former team), but he will provide depth in an area of need.
Johnson started all 16 games for the Niners last year, but he didn’t necessarily play up to that billing. The 26-year-old ranked near the bottom of Football Outsiders’ yards allowed per pass and success rate. Meanwhile, he graded out as the fourth worst qualified corner in the NFL, per Pro Football Focus, as he placed 118th out of 121 possible players.
For now, the Seahawks project to start Justin Coleman and Shaquill Griffin at cornerback. Neiko Thorpe, Deandre Elliott, and Alex Carter are also slated to return as reserves.
This is better than getting Sherman. Hahahahahaha. Why on earth would anyone sign this guy?
Better = probably not depending on Sherman’s recovery.
Cheaper = definitely! Salary cap has been tight for Seahawks. Can’t spend big everywhere in NFL.
You didn’t get the sarcasm? Or read the last part of my comment? Dontae Johnson could quite possibly be the worst corner in the entire NFL. Sherman with no legs or arms is better than Donate Johnson.
Just a reminder that some players do improve. Lester Hayes was horrible his first year or two as a starter, and then he went to five Pro Bowls. I’m not saying this WILL happen with this guy, but he could improve. If you need a more recent and less exemplary example, Shamar Stephen, recently signed by the Seahawks, was graded in the 40’s by PFF his first three years but graded in the low 70’s in 2017.
No, Johnson will never improve. You can’t teach instinct, and dude has NONE. I’m beyond curious to see which three absolute-wastes-of-space actually graded lower than him!!
Shoot, having no corner at all is better than having Johnson
Really glad the Vikings didn’t sign him after meeting with him.
Signing doesn’t mean “makes the 53 man roster.” Antoine Winfield, Cary Williams, Ron Parker, Will Blackmon, etc were all corners whom were brought in an not retained.
Pete Carroll could play a better corner than Dontae Johnson
