The Rams aren’t wasting any time in getting down to business with Brandin Cooks. The Rams have already expressed interest in extending the wide receiver’s contract, according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic (on Twitter).
Cooks is entering his contract year and will carry a cap number just under $8.5MM. Having sacrificed a first-round pick for him, the Rams were expected to try and lock him up for the long term, but not necessarily this quickly. Keeping with the theme of this offseason, L.A. is moving quickly and aggressively on this front.
A new deal for Cooks won’t come cheap. This offseson, Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans inked a five-year, $82.5MM extension with $55MM in overall guarantees. The deal, which could balloon to nearly $96MM through incentives, stands as the new watermark for receivers in terms of overall value. Evans is also second in average annual value at $17MM/year, trailing only Steelers superstar Antonio Brown. Cooks may not command a deal to match Evans, but he won’t be far off, either.
Cooks, a former first round pick out of Oregon State, had 65 grabs for 1,082 yards and seven touchdowns last season. Between 2015 and 2016 for New Orleans, he averaged 81 grabs for 1,156 yards and eight scores.
You overpaid for him once with the trade…might as well do it again with his contract.
I can’t agree with that statement. It was a 23rd overall pick. Nobody of Cooks caliber would have been there still. Great move by the Rams!
It was a terrible trade. See Harvin trade
Is it an overpay?
He’s entering his Age 25 season, he’s been healthy and will instantly slot into the starting lineup. On a team clearly gunning for a deep playoff run at a time when the Seahawks are rebuilding.
I like it.
The odds of the pick being a better player than cooks is very small
Here’s everybody taken with pick #23: link to mynfldraft.com
Rams showing how scared Sean is of the 49ers and Kyle Shanahan this offseason.
No one is scared of the 49ers. Jimmy is a beast but they have nothing close to the surrounding talent the Rams do.
Cooks shouldn’t be considered anywhere the caliber Evans or Brown are. Let’s not forget he was forgotten in NO after Michael Thomas’ emergence. Cooks may be in the top 15 WRs in the league and if he is, he’s closer to 15 than he is to 1.
Rams were smart to go and get cooks. Woods isnt a #1 and with suh on a 1 year deal you can’t risk not maximizing your chances this year.
If they get cooks on a long term deal of was worth it.
Now do the patriots use their pics and the 2nd rounder from sf to trade into the top 4 with the browns and take bradys successor.
Who knows bellichek could easily lile darnold or allen and have the ammo to trade into the top 4 to nab him giving up the 23 30 and sf 2nd round at pick without sacrificing picks next year.
The patriots would have a top 4 pick and their own 2nd rounder plus all their picks.
Plus if the browns like allen he could be there at 4. Assumijg.giants take barkley or Chubb.
Those 3 picks don’t get you into the top 4.
So the Pats 2 1st rounders have a combined value of 1360 points which is roughly equivalent to pick #9 (SF-1350 points). Their second rounders are worth 470 and 276. Additionally, pick #5 is 1700 and pick #4 is 1800.
So, in theory, assuming all teams are using this as a guide, the Pats could get into the top 5 using both 1st and one 2nd. Don’t see it happening, but it’s interesting to consider.
The Pats would be smarter to draft Lamar Jackson at 23, or trade up into the teens for him, than trading up into the top 10, especially for Christian Hackenberg…oh, I’m sorry, Josh Allen.
