With the noise about Baker Mayfield being a surprise Browns No. 1 pick increasing, the Giants could further shake up the draft Thursday night. They are exploring options about trading out of the No. 2 slot.
A Giants source informed ESPN.com’s Dianna Russini (Twitter link) that the team is looking to trade down. Although Russini notes the team is “contemplating all options,” the thinking here is the Giants have many needs to fill after a disastrous 2017 season.
However, this would run counter to Dave Gettleman‘s comments this offseason. The new GM seeks a “gold jacket player” with the No. 2 pick, and buzz about Saquon Barkley being Big Apple-bound gained steam over the past few weeks. The Giants trading out of the top five could remove them from the Barkley equation.
But Big Blue does have needs on its offensive line, in the secondary, at running back and now at wide receiver after the Brandon Marshall release. The Giants have not traded down in many years, and a Giants source told Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.tv last week the team would be better off picking a superior prospect at No. 2 than moving down and starting its draft with a lesser-regarded one. The Giants have been linked to a possible Quenton Nelson pursuit in the event of a trade-down, but the team many expected to be in the mix for the No. 2 slot — the Bills — may not be especially interested in surrendering enough picks to move that high.
Depends how far they move down. The consensus seems to be that Barkley, Chubb, And Nelson are the top 3 prospects in this draft. After that, Fitzpatrick, Ward, and R. Smith are all considered to be elite talents with some adding Edmunds and Derwin James to that list.
The likelihood of four QBs going in the top 5, despite none being top-5 talents in this draft plays in favor of the Giants moving down. They can move down to 5 (with Broncos trade) and still get either Chubb or Barkley. They could even trade all the way to 12 (with Bills trade) and find themselves with Ward, Fitzpatrick, Smith, Edmunds or James.
This is why most people think the Giants would be wasting the pick by using it on Chubb or Barkley. The nature of the league says a QB needs to go in that spot. If the Giants don’t like one of the QBs, then they need to trade down and pick up a lot of extra picks. The fact that they can do that and still get an elite talent makes it a no brainer.
If they can trade down without going past 7 then I agree, but 12 is just too far for me.
Staying in the top 7 won’t happen. The Jets, Browns, Broncos, Colts, and Bucs aren’t moving up to get QBs.
I heard they were offered by Denver, but turned them down. Too bad because they could use the extra picks, plus still have gotten Barkley, Chubb, or Nelson at 5. And have some extra draft capital. Maybe an additional 2nd or 3rd round pick.
I’d put Derwin James a head of Fitzpatrick, Ward, and Smith. He looks like Sean Taylor 2.0.
Don’t see the Broncos trading up. Bills are the only team with enough ammo to get to #2 just using this year’s picks.
Packers, Bills, Cards are the 3 most talked about teams that are looking to trade up. Packers want Ward, Fitzpatrick, or James though – no need to move to #2. Hard to imagine the Saints or Pats trading up with several other needs.
Equal Value:
Rich Hill Value: Bills #12, 22, 53
Jimmy Johnson: Bills #12, 22, 53, 65
Rich Hill Value: Cards #15, 2019 1st, #47
Jimmy Johnson Value: Cards #15, 2019 1st, #47, #97
The Jets gave up approximately 329 extra value according to Rich Hill’s chart. Or the equivalency of the 13/14th overall pick. And 750 extra value according to Jimmy Johnson chart, or the 23/24th overall pick.
Darnold is the only QB that really warrants trading up. He’s graded higher than Wentz, Goff, Winston. Well below RG3 and Luck.
Eagles overpaid by 208 (Rich Hill) or the 28th overall pick to get Wentz.
Every single trade up into the top 1-3 has involved an overpay by at least 1 1st round pick valuation. 2 1sts, and 2 seconds basically gets you to that point for the Bills and Cards.
There will never be another Sean Taylor
I did not know he was Highlander.
Trading down to pick up more “prospects” is tantamount to the philosophy that got them 3 wins in the first place.
I agree with the Gettleman scenario where you need a HOF player with a pick as high as 2.
Trading down, just gets them more bodies….what the G-Men need are elite players and that’s what you would get at 2.
Unfortunately there isn’t an elite Tackle in this draft. And Chubb would be out of position in a 3-4 stand-up backer position. I’d just take Barkley, but “2 is too high for a running back”
It may get them bodies but a lot of talent in this draft in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. And moving down 3 spots (which I heard they turned down from Denver) they would still have gotten either Barkley or Nelson.
Smart. One guy can’t and won’t change that team.
True, but one GREAT GUY goes a long way to building a team that has elite cornerstone players in the mix.
Trading down for “players” that may or may not pan out just doesn’t cut it when your in 3 win mode looking to move to 8-8 at worst.
Of course no guarantee that your pick at 2 is that yellow jacket player either, but you stand a much better chance picking 1-9 than any further down just to acquire additional draft picks.
Who are these “most people”? Your fantasy football buddies? Everything I’ve read or seen from draft analysts, publications, NFL draft experts and people who are involved in the draft process, are in the opinion that unless there is no player, particularly at QB, that they are in love with, they need to either take Barkley or Chubb or if blown away with an offer move down and acquire more assets. I agree with that. After much research I’m starting to think that these QB’s have a 50/50chance of becoming elite although most will become starters in the league. Are the Giants going to pass up an immediate impact player for a 50/50 chance of the QB being more than a serviceable QB. If they do that they will follow the path of the Browns and the Jets.
Based on past grades (NFL.com) Rosen & Mayfield grade on par with Carr, Lynch, and Manziel All 6.0 to 6.27. Basically a starter with Pro Bowl potential.
They graded lower than Bortles, Mariota, Trubisky, Bridgewater, Wentz, Goff, Geno Smith, and Winston. All 6.27 to 6.9. Multiple Pro Bowl level.
Darnold, grades out higher than all of them at 7.0 Multiple Pro Bowl / Fringe HOF level.
RG3 graded out at 95 or 8.7 HOF level.
Luck graded out at 97 or 9.24 Once in a Lifetime Level.
Grades don’t always pan out due to injuries, or partying.
That’s the key word….potential.
Geno Smith, RG3, Manziel, Ryan Leaf, Tim Couch…etc etc etc
All had potential.
Geno is the biggest outlier of the bunch for sure. I only went back to 2012 draft. Don’t know Ryan Leaf or Couch’s grades to compare. But injuries aside… 8 of 12 still starting is pretty good for QBs graded 6 or above since 2012. And Bridgewater lost his job due to injury, so could have been 9 of 12.
AGREE>>>AGREE>>>AGREE!
All for Immediate Impact players rather than a bunch of “potential” impact players!
“If they do that they will follow the path of the browns and the jets”
Uhhhh, Giants are picking in between those two teams. So you’re already there brah. You are just a competent QB away from being there multiple years too.
I guess your not a fan who watches why a team finishes were they do. In the 2016 season the giants fonish with 11 wins. In the 4th game of the 2017 season they lose their top 3 WR for the year and another for multiple games. Their starting center goes out for the year 1 game later and 2 other OL are lost for periods of time. On defense they lose 2 CB’s for significant games, their best linebacker plays less than half the season due to injury, and they lose 3 games on the last play of game.
Yes injuries are a part of the game but this was beyond normal and caused the team to free fall. With the addition of healthy players and Barkley they’ll be back to a 10 ~ 11win team.
And after the draft tonight expect Cleveland to be back on the clock as soon as the 2018 season ends. Baker Mayfield? Really? As for the Jets, they should send the Browns And Giants a nice gift basket for passing on Sam Darnold. He’s gonna be a good one after sitting out this year (or at least the 1st 8`9 games) b ehind McCown.
steelers trade leveon bell and 1st rd pick to giants for the 2nd overall pick and draft Saquan Barkley
Bell should get them #2 by his self
If he was under contract for like 5M/year for 3 or 4 years sure. Not at 15 M franchise tag.
Cheesesteaks for everyone.
