The Ravens have signed quarterback Robert Griffin III to a one-year deal, the club announced today. It’s a $1MM deal with a small signing bonus, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.
Baltimore has reportedly had interest in Griffin for some time, as the team nearly signed the former No. 2 overall pick last season. Griffin also turned down an offer from the Cardinals, and eventually sat out the entirety of the 2017 campaign. The Ravens recently brought in Griffin for a workout, per Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com, and a subsequent visit led to a deal that was hammered out on Tuesday night.
RG3, of course, was at one time among the most dynamic talents in the NFL. As a Redskins rookie in 2012, Griffin posted 3,200 passing yards and 20 touchdowns against just five interceptions, and added another 815 yards and seven scores on the ground. That performance helped Washington to a postseason berth and led to Griffin being named Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Injuries and ineffectiveness took a toll on Griffin over the next two seasons, however, and the Redskins ultimately benched him in favor of Kirk Cousins. Washington declined to allow Griffin to see the field at all in 2015, as a serious injury would have triggered an expensive guarantee on his fifth-year option. A two-year, $15MM deal brought RG3 to the Browns in 2016, but health issues limited him once again, and he appeared in just five games before being released last spring.
Griffin is now slotted in as the Ravens’ backup quarterback behind starter Joe Flacco, and his addition almost surely means Baltimore will not re-sign former No. 2 signal-caller Ryan Mallett. Flacco has been extremely durable during his decade-long career, so there’s no guarantee that Griffin will see any action during the regular season.
Now why would we go and do that
Because Ryan Mallett is arguably not even mediocre.
and neither is RG3, which is why it doesn’t make sense
Exactly
Time for someone to sign Kaepernick now
the ravens should have been that someone, despite his lady’s comments last season, if their goal was to put the best team out on the field
He threw his career away for his social justice nonsense.
Right. Because unarmed black people being murdered by police for no reason other than the fact that being openly racist and intolerant in America is socially acceptable is total nonsense.
Can we keep this sports
The fact that you think it’s nonsense is what he’s fighting. Regardless if we agree on the cause or solution, we must agree intercity violence is a problem
It may be a small minority of all deaths, but are you not disturbed when you hear police killed an unarmed person?
Not when the person killed just robbed a store or ran from the cops or assaulted the cops or threatened the cops… fight in court like a non criminal.
Merely running from the cops and being killed is okay with you? How about just standing in one’s backyard? Standing in the vestibule of one’s apartment building? And good luck fighting against lying cops and prosecutors in court.
Ok lets go through what hes done. 1) “i will not stand for a flag of a country that opresses people of color”. America was ahed of the curve on ending slavery and civil rights. In modern times America is one of the best contries in the world for people of color to live in. 2) worse a fidel castro shirt in Mimai. 3) kneeled during the 9/11 moment of silence during week 1 a few years ago. 2 and 3 is absolutely despicable. No place for his ignorance in the NFL. It has nothing to do with kneeling and its so obvious since hundreds have done it since and nothing happend to them.
In no way were we ahead of the curve in ending slavery. We were one of the last countries in the Western Hemisphere (Brazil being the last) and long after the rest of Europe to stop engaging in the slave trade.
Just do a google search next time you think you might want to contribute to discussion – it’s best for everyone.
Ahed of the curve in that the majority of the nation had not wanted to end slavery yet. As if that is relevant to the main points of why Kap is a clown anyways. I clearly what he did that was wrong
I’ll take Castro, and I have LOTS of problems with Castro, over many of the exiles in Miami anyway, especially the ones who engaged in or sponsored terrorism, including the downing of a civilian airliner.
Uh, kaepernick is a “perceived injustice” social warrior. He was adopted by well off white people. His girlfriend is an open communist who has repeatedly called for the overthrow of the US government. America was by far one of the first countries to abolish slavery. Education > fake ass internet. Simple fact is America is the least racist country on the planet. Communists are trying to destroy us from within, and the left has fallen hook line and sinker. Time to grow up.
“America was by far one of the first countries to abolish slavery…Simple fact is America is the least racist country on the planet.”
Can’t tell if you’re being serious or just trying to troll, but wow, it never ceases to amaze me with that amount of ignorance on the internet. First off, American wasn’t one of the first countries to abolish slavery. Clearly your “education” system has failed you miserably. Second, American being the least racist country on the planet is not a fact, let alone a “simple fact”. If you want to believe that, that’s fine, go ahead, but don’t say it’s a fact because it’s not. Your ignorance is shining brightly.
If he’s willing to accept a similar deal and role as RG3, yes.
Comparing Kaep to RGIII is only fair in terms of on field awful play. But the BS that kaep brings with him politically is not worth a headache.
I’m glad to see RG3 get another chance. The coaching staff and front office rushed him back way to soon and had a big part in ruining career. I wouldn’t be shocked to see him make a few appearances or possibly start in Baltimore if Flacco struggles or gets hurt.
Nah our coaching staff adores our overpaid QB too much. Griffin will get injured in the preseason or maybe the OTAs and never see action
I’m not a Ravens fan but I really get tired of the Flacco bashing. How much do you think those teams that have had a championship drought of 40 years or more would pay for a QB with 2 rings?
Joe has one. I have nothing against him. He’s just not the same QB he used to be. A big part of that is the knee and back health issues. Another big part is the constant change in coaching staff. Then when they finally settle on a guy the guy prefers to throw 3 yard passes on 3rd and 20. Marty Wornihweg is the problem. Not Joe. He used to have one of the best deep arms in the game, but then he had jacoby Jones and Torrey Smith. Now he had perriman and wallace. Not the same. O-line protection is an issue too
Johnny Manziel next?
I hope so. Hell, yeah, give him a shot!
No thanks.
He’s a bruised and battered QB who skills were always based on him running so now that he can’t run, what good his he? He’s not an accurate passer. He will be cut. His career is over and is lucky if saved his money, if not he’s screwed.
I’m no expert on Griffin, but he’s got a career completion percentage of 63.3%, better than Flacco and right behind Tom Brady, and better interception and yards/pass rates than Flacco. There have been other running QB’s who still had effective, even Hall of Fame-worthy, careers after injuries took away their running ability, from Billy Kilmer to Joe Namath and Ken Stabler, so to just assume that Griffin can’t make that transition seems just a tad premature, presumptuous and, perhaps, prejudiced.
it’s none of those things. look at his stats, ever since he lost his mobility, he hasn’t been productive.
For the Browns. I still wouldn’t write him off completely and permanently.
You’re really not putting rg3 in Kilmer, Namath or Stablers category..
PLEASE?
I think he was trying to inject some humor into this forum with that post, although to be completely successful he should have included the Bears Bobby Douglass with those other nibble footed QBs.
JC, do you people have reading comprehension problems? I never said that RG III was as good as Kilmer, Namath or Stabler. What I said was that other running QB’s still had quality careers AFTER their running ability was taken away from them, so no, Bobby Douglass doesn’t count. Hell, Kilmer might be the best example for RG III because it was literally 10 years before he got to Washington and revived his career.
Unfortunately you can not take the shots an option QB has to take to survive in the NFL… he lost a step and that kid got killed…. he is not a pocket QB, and never will be
LETS GO I’m souped RG3 is getting another chance even tho I hate the ravens
I was hoping PC & JS would bring RG3 in to back up RW in Seattle…but guess that dream won’t ever come true now.
It’s amazing you sign RG3, who has proven nothing, but no one
Wants any part of Kap who took a team to a super bowl.
The NFL is one big conspiracy.
It’s not a conspiracy. It’s a business. Kaepernick is bad for business, ergo he’s not going to be extended the privilege- and it is a privilege, not a right- to play in the NFL.
Roger Goodell is the last person you would trust with a high powered rifle behind a grassy knoll…ergo, no conspiracy!
RG3 does not have baggage tied to signing him
He also doesn’t have knees or an arm.
No one wants to deal with the BS that surrounds him. Like the other guy said, its a privilege to play in the NFL and he lost his. Teams know if they sign him, they will lose a huge amount of fans.
Said fans being snowflakes. Hyper-patriotic, whiny, snowflakes, no better than the ones they decry on college campuses.
Do you think he’s still working on his brand?
Hey, why not? More and more of these players seem to be lining up book deals or a reality TV series as a fallback position in the event they self destruct.
How much? 450 thousand, non guaranteed? He will probably get injured in the preseason.
I predict he gets injured at a press conference
Wow! Thought we are suppose to be getting better. Instead we just dig a draper hole for ourselves. Clean house with coaches, management, and executives. Hit the restart button.
