The Patriots have acquired offensive tackle Trent Brown from the Niners. The deal will see Brown and the No. 143 overall pick head to New England in exchange for the No. 95 overall selection, according to Adam Schefter and Field Yates of ESPN.com (Twitter link).
Brown passed his physical and that was more than a formality in this case. The 49ers reportedly had concerns about Brown’s shoulder after offseason surgery (and his conditioning), so the Patriots had to confirm that he was good to go before making things official.
Brown graded out as Pro Football Focus’ No. 21 ranked tackle in the NFL last season. He also scored as one of the ten best pass blocking tackles in the league, but the Niners were looking for a tackle who performs better against the run.
The Patriots acquire Brown as he enters his contract year, which could give him some extra motivation to perform. The 49ers were unwilling to extend Brown’s deal, which helped bring about the trade (and the drafting of his replacement).
Brown projects to pair with top Pats draft pick Isaiah Wynn at tackle, though LaAdrian Waddle and Matt Tobin are also in the fold.
Stupid move!! I don’t care what anyone says. This is dumb. Brown and our first round pick could’ve been the future of that line together. I love Staley but he’s getting old and I’m sure won’t play a lot longer. And really doesn’t even seem like we got much for a guy who’s pretty damn good.
I agree but I read reports he wasn’t putting in the work needed. That would’ve been solid bookends tho.
Neither Brown or McGlinchey are capable of being what Joe Staley is at Left Tackle. Basically they replaced a guy they maxed out on potential (Brown a Guard in college and 7th round draft pick). And you move up 2 rounds? That’s a win. McGlinchey replaces Brown. They draft Staley’s replacement next season in the 1st or 2nd.
They took the 21st best tackle and trade him AND a pick to move up 48 spots. How does New England makes teams make dumb deals. The pick going to New England should hVe been a 6th or 7th round pick. Don’t understand how a good player only gets up plus 48 spots? Dumb
injury, conditioning, contract
Eagles got Timmy Jernigan last year for moving down 25 spots
this SF front office is crazy. they either luck into great situations (Garopollo trade/bounty of picks to trade back a spot with CHI last year) or make ridiculously odd decisions (this/McGlinchey at 9/ridiculous FA overpays)
Should’ve been their 2nd not 3rd rounder. Smells of payback for Jimmy G.
I completely agree. This has “make up call” written all over it.
Nope this is the right price. the guy has a torn labrum, conditioning issues, is in his final season of his rookie contract. think you are nuts of you thought they were getting a 2nd.
Plus it’s a contract year and we can sign him again if we want
why did the pats draft a lineman rd1
Bc they need linemen. There’s more than one big body there protecting Brady.
The guy they got is versatile as well, which is a key for the Pats. He’s a “plug and play” guard but has the chance to potentially be a good tackle. My guess is that he’s more a rotation player this year with the goal being to have him be a starter in 2019.
Has trouble with conditioning I’m guessing they were scared it’d get worse after giving him a big extension
They do still have Cannon at RT, and Garcia was supposed to be the backup LT to replace Solder before he had those blood clots and lost all that weight
The Niners felt they should give the Pats a little reach around from the Jimmy G trade, where they paid what amounts to a bag of skittles.
Pats got Jimmy G in the 2nd round. And the pats traded Jimmy G for a 2nd round pick and 4th round draft pick. All while he had a couple months left on his contract. Sounds like a win to me.
