Free-agent quarterback Geno Smith is set to visit with the Seahawks, a source told Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. It’ll be the second visit for Smith, who met with the Chargers earlier this week but left without a deal.
The Seahawks are in need of some depth behind Russell Wilson after parting ways with backup quarterback Trevone Boykin earlier this week. Boykin was arrested Wednesday on charges of aggravated assault stemming from an incident earlier this month. Russell Wilson currently stands as the only quarterback on the Seahawks’ roster. Austin Davis was the only other quarterback on the team’s active roster outside of Wilson last season and remains a free agent.
Smith, 27, has spent his entire career in New York, with the first four years of his career spent with the Jets and last season spent as the backup for Eli Manning and the Giants. Smith wound up making a start last season as Eli Manning’s consecutive starts streak came to an end in controversial fashion. He appeared in two games in total, completing 58.3% of his passes while throwing a touchdown without an interception.
The Jets took Smith in the second round of the 2013 draft out of West Virginia. He started 29 games through his first two seasons but was relegated to backup duties behind Ryan Fitzpatrick in 2015 before departing the Jets.
Seahawks are not a good fit for him.
How so?
Geno is a pocket passer. Russell Wilson is a mobile passer. Their skill sets are different. A back up QB should reflect the starter so as to be able to fill in as seamlessly as possible.
Geno is also not someone you want to rely on to start. I think Wilson will be running for his life a lot this season and it’s a distinct possibility he gets injured. Therefore, I think a back up with a similar skill set to Wilson’s who can be a modestly successful starter is best for Seattle.
Geno would be best suited for some place that employed a pocket passer and where he would realistically never see the field outside of garbage time or an emergency.
That’s just my opinion, I could be wrong.
The data shows that Wilson is better in the pocket than outside of it but that’s not what people want to hear. He’s a pocket QB who can run, not a running QB who can pass.
thank you, people see color and think mobile AND thats it. What they BOth need is a midrange west coast attack, that you HAVE to blitz to slow down, THEN Russell can shine, and Geno can learn to dump. We need to dump the BOOTLEG anyway, it stunts QB growth, ,How can you develop as a pocket passer with your back turned the first 3 seconds, Short answer… YOU CANT. We wont know what Russell can really do until he gets an OC with more success than he has, Mobile QBs NEVER get that. they get washout QBs who barely made it into the league playing OR coaching, and they spitball it. Cam had SHULA? Russell had Bevell? Now he has schottenheimer, who is still not welcome in Georgia, his last post.
Another example of a team where Kaep would fit that is instead looking at a lesser player who has never been good.
I think Seattle is ideal for Kaepernick. They’re rebuilding, so the media circus that follows is not a big deal. The attention might actually be welcome. No pressure, since he won’t start a QB battle, but he can start if necessary.
Seattle is a socially mature city, and a 2nd mobile QB enables the OC to develop a PLAN, (that everyone can run) instead of a PACKAGE , that evaporates WHEN Russell gets dinged. They still cant beat press, and we shall see if BShott knows how to employ TE’s Bevell had NO CLUE.
