Earlier this year, Cowboys tight end Jason Witten said he intends to play in 2018. If a major television network has its way, the long-time Cowboys star will hang up his cleats. Michael McCarthy of Sporting News reports that Fox is targeting Witten to be their new Thursday Night Football analyst.
FOX (along with ESPN) previously pursued Peyton Manning for a television gig, but it sounds like the network is changing their focus to Witten. The 35-year-old wouldn’t be the only “former” Cowboys star on the mic this season, as Witten would join both Tony Romo and Troy Aikman on television. Executives at Fox are apparently “intrigued by the possibility” of adding Witten to their team.
Of course, it might be tough for the network to convince Witten to walk away from the NFL. The 2003 third-round pick had another standout campaign in 2017, earning his 11th Pro Bowl nod. The 15-year veteran finished the season with 63 receptions for 560 yards and five touchdowns. He’s the Cowboys franchise leader in receptions and receiving yards.
Tony Romo was a nice change up from the usual commentary, but I’m just confused as to why everyone wants former Cowboys. And for everyone ready to pounce on me, I think Witten is a great player and one of the best all time at his position. Just wondering if he’s done some work on the mic that has them intrigued?
He’s an intelligent and well spoken guy and very well respected amongst his peers…I’m sure he’s not the only one that is on a list of potential commentators but because he’s Jason Witten and he’s on the Cowboys it’s newsworthy
Romo was really good this year on the mic. Honestly he was probably my favorite commentator this year and I hope he keeps doing this for years. He really knows what he’s talking about and its kind of funny to see him calling out the plays the offense and defense are running in real-time.
Romo got better as the year went on, but he was atrocious in the playoffs. He also needs to further distance himself from calling out the plays before the snap. It’s a cheap parlor trick reminiscent of what Steve Stone does in baseball. Any NFL QB who has access to both teams can sit in a press box and dissect what’s about to happen. There’s a reason they don’t. Telling people what’s about to happen might make them look smart for a little while, but it becomes irritating in time. It’s like sitting next to someone in a movie theater, and they’re constantly telling you what’s coming next. Kinda takes you out of the moment…
Romo was amazing. I call out plays constantly being that I played QB for a long time and have studied and coached the position. You’re a true hater and should take your comments elsewhere, because you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Except he’s completely right, you can’t see it cause you’re standing to close to the elephant, just because you share the cheap trick with Romo doesn’t make it any less cheap. Also FYI nothing he said makes him a “hater” look up the definition and you’ll understand the difference, you can’t just yell hater at someone because they have a different opinion.
Is anyone really surprised that he was “atrocious in the playoffs?” Real shocker……
Hope this means Joe Thomas comes back for another year.
At least this time Romo actually made the playoffs lmao. But still fell short of the super bowl lol.
