The Eagles had placed a hefty asking price on Nick Foles going into the offseason. It was reported that they were seeking at least a first- and fourth-round pick. Apparently, the Eagles never got an offer that made them feel close to dealing the reigning Super Bowl MVP.
Eagles head coach Doug Pederson helped shed some light on the situation surrounding Foles’ status while speaking to Steve Wyche of the NFL Network on Saturday at the NFL Annual Meeting in Orlando.
“Nothing too crazy. It had to be the right deal for us to do that,” Pederson said to Wyche. “But there wasn’t anything coming down our way for Nick.”
While speaking to Wyche, Pederson also said the Carson Wentz is “ahead of schedule” in his rehab from a torn ACL. Wentz was well on his way to serious MVP consideration before sustaining the injury in Week 14 against the Rams.
Foles will once again be relegated to the backup role once Wentz resumes duty. Pederson indicated that didn’t seem to be an issue for the 29-year-old Foles.
“He’s totally fine being that mentor, sort of in that backup role, helping Carson along the way,” Pederson continued. “That’s who Nick is. That’s who he is. And when called upon, he’s going to perform, but he understands this is Carson’s team and he’s going to support him every way he can.”
The Cardinals had reportedly sent in a call to the Eagles regarding Foles around the time they struck a deal with Sam Bradford. It was also reported in early March that an AFC team offered a second-round pick in exchange for Foles.
You don’t say?
Don’t blame the Eagles for setting a high price tag and not moving Foles. I think most teams realize Foles played with a very good defense in a very good scheme for a QB. Not trying to knock Foles, but he’s not a franchise QB. Maybe a good QB who can hold down the position for a couple of years, but I’d be surprised if he turns out to be a guy who can carry a franchise on his shoulders.
I’m not a Foles believer, but 33 points in the Super Bowl when the pats had to start from their own 25every drive is not a very good defense, I would call that being very exposed lmao. And Peterson changed the whole scheme for Foles, so no he didn’t walk into a good scheme either. I wouldn’t call running RPO’s all day a dream scheme for a an lmao
Agree with all of this…the Eagles may have had a great defense during the season. But certainly not in the Super Bowl. As for the offense, it got tailored to fit Foles. Doesn’t mean some other team couldn’t try and do the same for him.
The asking price indicates that Foles wasn’t really available for trade… for instance, the browns can say “we really like Duke Johnson and don’t want to trade him. But if you offer multiple first round draft picks, we will listen”… no NFL team in their right mind would trade for Foles at that price. my guess is that the browns did offer one of their 2nd round picks for Foles.. purely speculative on my part, they did trade for Tyrod though.
The Vikings gave a first and a fourth for Bradford.. teams will do it if they have to. But I agree that it might be a high price to pay for right time right place. Hell Keenum just got paid for one magic year. And believe me I loved every second of it until the NFC championship when he threw that bonehead pick 6 which turned the tables into a massacre. But don’t think that’s a high price. It’s well worth it for a good QB. But if the eagles stand put, they have a top 5 backup QB for certain.
Just dont see a team that would be willing to give him a starting opportunity. But thats ok nothing wrong with being the best backup in the game.
Everyone in the league is available for the right price, but the teams trading for him have to be willing to meet that price. His value to the Eagles at this time is simply worth more than any other teams were willing to give up for him. It’s not that he doesn’t have value or that other teams wouldn’t like to accuser him.
If Wentz does end up missing the first 4 games or so, having Foles as a competent backup will allow the eagles to still be competitive in games and not have to force Wentz into playing sooner then they’d otherwise be comfortable with.
Really don’t know why the Eagles would want to trade Foles. He did everything you could ask for from your #2 guy and Wentz is not immune from suffering more injuries. Nate Sudefeld is listed as the guy behind Foles on the depth chart but is he ready to move up if Foles departs?
