The Browns have acquired wide receiver Jarvis Landry from the Dolphins, according to ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). Miami will receive a fourth-round pick in 2018 (No. 123) and a seventh-round pick in 2019, the MMQB’s Albert Breer tweets.
The Dolphins used the franchise tag on Landry in February with the sole intent of trading him instead of losing him for nothing. The Dolphins did not want to give Landry a contract that would put him near the top of the wide receiver market, but the Browns apparently do not have reservations about giving him a monster deal.
For the time being, the Browns will assume Landry at the cost of his one-year placeholder, worth nearly $16MM. Presumably, terms of a long-term pact have already been hammered out between the two sides, and that deal should come with an average annual value of no less than $13MM per season. Landry, 25, was rumored to be seeking a $14MM annual salary and $30MM in guarantees during his talks with the ‘Fins.
The Bears and Ravens were also linked to Landry, but the Browns – who count wide receiver amongst their many positional needs this offseason – have stepped up to acquire the dangerous slot target. As of this writing, Landry is the highest-paid player on the roster for 2018.
Over the last four years, Landry has hauled in 400 passes for 4,038 yards and 22 touchdowns for Miami. Landry finished the 2017 season with 987 receiving yards, though his yards per catch average dipped to a career low 8.8 per catch. The Browns still have to figure out their quarterback situation, but they have a lethal 1-2 at wide receiver in Landry and Josh Gordon. Former first round pick Corey Coleman is also in the mix and the Browns are hoping that he can take a step forward with a more talented QB throwing to him.

Things are looking up in Cleveland
If it’s the Browns you know they felt #1 and #4 for him
Funny I likey
Awesome!
Wow! Good move for the Browns. If I was ten I’d try to sign a QB, draft Barkley at 1 and draft another qb at 4. If they didn’t trade one of those picks which I doubt they did.
I just posted elsewhere earlier that I’d like to see them acquire Landry, draft Barkley and Kirk, and keep Kizer in their plans.
Y do they need Kirk now? With Coleman in there 2 and a reported reunion possible with Pryor?
Because Coleman is a bust, and Pryor isn’t necessarily coming back. But since Landry is a slot receiver, maybe DJ Clark?
I’m kind of a Courtland Sutton fan early in the second round too…he doesn’t have great speed at all but he has decent hands and he’ll win a lot of 50/50 balls. I also wouldn’t mind seeing them get a Dallas Goedert type and using him and Njoku in two tight end sets.
How about DJ Moore?
I could be fine with DJ Moore. That would be okay with me.
Coleman is a bust? Remind me what decent QB he’s had… I forget
Boom! They just did what I thought they should do they just traded for Taylor from the Bills. They can draft Barkley and still get a going good qb with 4. I’m not a Browns fan but I love what they are doing and think they have potential.
And he’s injury prone.
Hope it’s a high 2nd and a 4th or maybe a pick next year….
Which solidifies my thoughts that he’s not a WOW top of WR because Cleveland does! Why go to a lame duck coach where qbs go to die? All these draft picks before and still win one game in 2 years? Ugh
Different regime. The Harvard Boys had no clue what they were doing when it came to drafting.
I’m not sure what picks the Browns gave up, but as long as they didn’t significantly overpay, I like this move a lot.
With the information we have right now, the MOST they gave up was a 2018 3rd and a 2019 3rd
If they could somehow sign cousins and draft barkley, with gordon and landry, that would be a decent offense.
Dont forget Coleman
We want to forget Coleman, especially that last drop of his.
Called this last week. It makes too much sense. He opens up things for Josh Gordon, Coleman, and that nice young TE they have. I agree with other posters. Sign Barkeley with number one and I’d go for a defensive playmaker at 4 if i could sign a FA quarterback. But if not draft one of the young guys to develop.
Vanquished to the shadow realm
literally just posted this a few hours ago……
The thing that seems to make sense at least thats in my mind would be for the browns to do, and they have the assets and money to do so:
Sign
AJ McCarron
Resign
Josh Gordon
Trade
for Jarvis Landry
Draft
Saquon Barkley(1st Pick)
Minkah Fitzpatrick(4th Pick)
Their offense would be average roughly. Getting Fitzpatrick helps, but they need to spend a lot on their D too
I think they’d be above average. Josh Gordon and Landry would be a hell of a duo
Agreed. Add in Coleman, Barkley, Njoku, Thomas and the rest of a solid oline and that’s got the potential to be a really good offense. OBviously based off of potential with Barkely, McCarron, Coleman, and the cleanliness of Gordon.
I’m betting Dorsey goes after 1 or 2 free agent DBs.
with Gordon, Landry, Coleman and the pairing of Barkley and Duke Johnson their offense will be a hell of alot better then just average and maybe getting these big name offense players might persuade Cousins to head there…..FYI, not a Browns fan but love offseason moves.
I’m with you on this
Yea, i could see them making a run at Sherman or one of the other high end DB’s
They have solid WRs now, and a good O-line. Just get a qb and RB in the draft then their offense could be good
Yeah because every draft pick works out.
what do suggest TJECK109? not draft those positions? good recipe for success
What I’m saying is it isn’t as easy as just draft the position and the offense will be good. They are the best proof of how it can backfire
true and GB has proven without a backup qb you’ll lose. draft for bed and depth
Reports are neither pick is a 1st or 2nd.
Would love to see them try to sign Sherman too. That way they can get Barkley and a QB without having doubts about Fitzpatrick
Sherman would be cool, but there’s no way he would ever sign with the Browns. Even if he did, Fitzpatrick is my favorite player in the draft and I wouldn’t let signing a corner that’s almost 30 stop me from drafting him.
Didn’t they just draft like 5 wr last year?
Not sure either how that 8.8 ypc is going to improve on the Browns, unless they do land Cousins.
That was the Harvard Guys choices. They failed. And as a Browns fan, 8.8 yards is positive yardage we’ll gladly take.
What about the guys before the Harvard guys? The guys that drafted Weeded etc. Cleveland has had multiple number one picks for multiple years and they have done nothing prior to the Harvard guys.
Try, try again? One of these GMs is gonna get it right sooner or later.
My point is that it wasn’t just the Harvard guys
So what? Should they just bow out of the draft and free agency? Eventually someone will get it right.
Not every wr is a deep threat. Landry will be a security blanket for whatever qb the Browns get. He runs good routes and has elite hands. He may not be a burner, but he is probably the best slot wr in the game.
Randall Cobb is considered by many to be Rodgers’ security blanket (I won’t argue with anyone who says it’s Nelson), is a slot receiver, is getting over $10 MIL/year and a lot of people have wanted him gone since the day after he signed that extension. Point being, security blankets who average less than 9 ypc aren’t worth top 5 wr money, especially when you don’t (yet) have a qb to even get him the ball.
Barkley goes #1. Which ever QB they like best at 4. Likely only 1 gone between the giants and colts.
If the Browns take Bradley 1 you can guarantee teams will try to trade for 2/3 to take the top 2 QBs off the board
Who’s Bradley?
Free agents are not choosing Cleveland. The Browns have to trade for a quarterback.
Draft Barkley #1
Draft QB #4
Trade 2 2nds for Nick Foles
Personally Taylor is a good stop gap, and I know everyone is getting on there knees for Barkley. IMO is that he is still a RB which makes him the 4th most important position on an offense behind QB,oline,WR so my pint is they still need to identify there QB no matter who they chose and take him. Let him sit behind Taylor and not have the rookie pressure and they still get a great player at 4 weather it’s chubbs or Fitzpatrick hell has anyone stopped to think browns take QB at 1 then giants decide its time to start a replacement for Eli so that’s another QB then let’s say jets move up to get ahead of broncos and take QB well then Barkley is still there at 4,now is that Likely probably not but I just think the browns can’t keeo playing we are to scared to draft a QB so we will take another player who doesn’t carry and offense anymore so we can’t be scrutinized. They need to Nut up and pick a QB let’s take a look they passed on Wentz,Watson, trubisky who may not all pan out but right now look like there at least be pretty good. So I am not ripping on Barkley is he worth #1 yes and if colts were picking that’s who they should take hands down, but for browns to pass on the most important position in football cause there scared, for a piece that just isn’t that important anymore and that you can find in later round, kamura, hunt,Bell, freeman, blunt all good or even great players and all later rounds or even undrafted. Grow up browns look at niners maybe jimmy doesn’t pan out but they have taken there shot how many times has the rams drafted qb high for him not to pan out. Looks like the bucs ended up with a slightly above qb is that what they wanted at 1 no but they grew a set and drafted a guy they liked,
These moves by the Browns were well excuted and thought out. Landry and Flash Gordon together. Deadly. A mobile QB that can move if the line breaks down perfect. Trade the 4th overall pick tonthe bills seeing how they need a QB now. At #1 take the obvious choice in Saquon Barkley. Than take those picks from the bills and possibly address the O-Line. How Thomas won’t be there forever. I’m a die hard steelers fan. But I’ve always said the browns were just a QB away from being a .500 team. And I think Taylor might be that guy. A smart QB who doesn’t make that many mistakes.
