Delvin Breaux could be headed to Denver. Mike Klis of 9News reports (via Twitter) that the free agent cornerback is set to visit and take a physical with the Broncos. The defensive back will likely sign with the team if he passes his physical.
The 28-year-old wasn’t tendered by the Saints earlier this week, making him an unrestricted free agent. Breaux had his highs and lows while in New Orleans. He was a standout in 2015, grading out as a high-end starter per Pro Football Focus’ metrics. However, he did not deliver an encore performance in 2016, and his 2017 season was lost to injury.
The Saints designated Breaux to return from IR in October, but the cornerback had a setback that kept him out for another month. Ultimately, New Orleans did not activate him within the window, meaning that his season was done.
The former CFL player’s standout 2015 campaign saw him compile 45 tackles, 19 passes defended, and three interceptions. Injuries have been an issue with Breaux, who has broken his fibula twice and missed time with a shoulder injury.
After trading veteran cornerback Aqib Talib to the Rams, the Broncos are in need of another defensive back to pair with Chris Harris and Bradley Roby. Denver has already added one new cornerback to the mix with the signing of Tramaine Brock on a one-year $4 MM deal.
What in the world is JE’s strategy with bang-up players? Last year it was OL, this year CBs
??? Some intel that I can’t register.
It’s likely low-to-no risk, and it creates competition for OTAs and training camp at the very worst. Breaux is an intriguing talent if he can stay healthy.
Cool, these guys spend a lot of hours at the whiteboard figuring things out. Just was kind of curious at this injury state how the value would carry over. Thanks for the insight.
For sure. Elway has always liked to create crowded position groups; part of the “Iron Sharpens Iron” philosophy, I think.
Plus, guys can lose the athleticism following ligament or muscle injuries, but it seems that broken bones tend to be considered more “freak” injuries that don’t diminish it that much.
Pre-No Fly Zone, we had horrendous play from our 3rd and 4th corners, with guys like Tony Carter and a past-his-prime Quentin Jammer logging serious playing time. Breaux/Brock/Langley/Rios/etc can’t get much worse than that.
I’m scratching head here as well. Real difference makers available but we are looking at injured players. Didn’t work out with Heurman, who knows with Jake butt? We have cap room, how were we not entertaining soldier? Or even suh? I know he is ass but since we lost Talib and previous to him our safety we have no “edge”, “nastiness “ on defense? Why Brock? Why not the corner from raiders who by all accounts was top ten corner who signed cheap? And lastly what is thinking with o line?? Numerous holes yet no clear idea of what elway is doing. Frustrated I guess.
I would be on board with Suh; he and Peko up front would be really nice. I just think it’ll be too costly.
The money that TEs, WRs, and CBs are getting is pretty crazy this offseason, in my opinion. T.J. Carrie was one of the top ten FA CBs, but certainly not top ten in the whole league, and he got a lot of money on his long-term contract.
Roby only has a year left and will get an extension, so I’m sure Elway is saving some money for that. Same for Paradis and maybe Shaq Barrett on the extension front.
$15MM for Solder is steep, too. I think they’ll draft at least 2 OL, maybe even 3 (and get rid of Max Garcia and maybe Menelik Watson), and sign some depth/camp veterans all over the roster over the next few weeks to create more competition.
There’s still work to be done, but it’s only the first day of the league year. There’s time to go still.
Agree. Just used to players looking at Denver as a top landing place. Suh I heard today on Nfl Network should be looking at no more than 8 million to 10 per year. I’d take that. The draft will be key. At number 5 I take qb unless Chubb available defense is key
I like Sitton plus a draftee for an OL veteran and rookie but I’m guessing JE and Co. have something else in store.
People can say what they want, some bad some good, but Elway keeps dead money off the books.
This is an exciting off-season year for many teams.
Coming from a saints fan, I know this guy can be a real difference maker. He’s struggled to stay healthy for sure. But he’s also shown flashes of being a shut down corner. I’ll be sad to see him go
