On Thursday, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo signed the richest contract in the NFL when the 49ers inked him to a five-year, $137.5MM deal. The Niners’ new signal-caller talked to reporters on Friday and said he wanted to get a deal done as fast as possible.
“This is where I want to be, honestly,” he said. “It’s only going to help our team going forward, going into free agency, and it’s 75 degrees out here. It’s not a snowstorm like Chicago.”
San Francisco’s chief contract negotiator Paraag Marathe said the deal was a simple one. “John [Lynch] and Kyle [Shanahan] decide if he’s the man. If he’s the man, then we pay the man.” Though they were aggressive with the deal, 49ers general manager John Lynch said they were “going to be aggressively prudent” going forward, the Sacramento Bee’s Matt Barrows writes.
Here’s a look at some of the others reactions to the deal:
- Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio said Garoppolo could’ve gotten more from the 49ers by “forcing two or three years of the tag, especially since 2021 and 2022 would have been the first two years of a market-value contract, not the below-market back end of a five-year deal.”
- Andrew Brandt of The MMQB is a fan of the deal for the 49ers (Twitter link). He says that despite the leverage Garoppolo held in the situation, San Francisco still made out with a “two years and we’ll see” deal.
- Marathe also said the team has between $62-63MM in cap space, NBC Sports’ Mike Maiocco tweets. Though Lynch said the team will be conservative, San Francisco is set up to spend big if it wants to make an immediate push.
- ESPN’s Dan Graziano also thinks this is a steal for the 49ers. “But beyond this year, the only remaining guarantee is $7.5 million of his $17.2 million 2019 salary. … Basically, the Niners, who were projected to have about $100 million in cap space this year, used $37 million of it by front-loading this deal now, when they can afford to pay anything.”
Sorry to say but Patriots got fleeces big time in their succession choice for Tom Brady.
It was the turmoil. Jimmy should have got them a 1st rounder easy. Bill traded him just to get rid of him. Bad on their part
Agreed. Most fans here know BB did not get fair compensation for Jimmy. Bill screwed up big time
I think teams knew he didn’t really have much of a choice though, because it seems like it was known privately by many that he wouldn’t resign unless they paid him huge $$. The alternative would’ve been a compensation pick. I think they screwed up by not moving him this offseason, but with 3 top 64 picks they can use one to draft a QB or trade up for one.
Well I think he was forced to deal Jimmy. He was the one who always wanted Jimmy don’t forget
They got a 2nd rounder for a guy leaving as a free agent in 9 games. If that’s “fleeced”, what’s a good deal? Did they need to get 10 first rounders to make it a good deal?
If I remember correctly, the Browns offered their 2nd rounder which is basically a first so the Patriots passed up a better deal.
At the time the Patriots made the deal the Niners 2nd round pick was two spots lower than the Browns 2nd round pick. They expected to get the 35th pick instead of the 33rd pick, and by doing so they dealt him to the NFC, if say based on a comparison of 2nd round picks it was the right call.
Actually it was the Texans first round pick which at the time was expected to be a lower round pick but look where it’s at now.
Fleeced! Take the first rounder!!!
No redbird you do not get it. First like Tylerall5 pointed out they passes up a better deal.
More importantly did they not know he was going to be a free agent? They forgot? They needed to trade him last offseason for value.
They played their cards all WRONG. They had big offers last offseason. Multiple offers. All for MUCH more then they ultimately received.
Thus they got fleeced! Jesus who put them in a position for him to be 9 games from free agency? Themselves!! Not a very bright organization. And if they gambled on being able to resign him they gambled wrong. Shame on them again. They are paid to know they could not resign him.
He should have been resigned last offseason or before or traded for FULL value! Instead they got screwed! Screwed by their own ignorance and arrogance.
Damn this one fan guy is an idiot. I don’t see one true statement in his post, and logic makes no sense.
So pundits are actually viewing this as a good contract since it’s not a huge guarantee? And how does a “contract negotiator” justify his job by giving out the highest AV contract in the league?
Jimmy G had leverage – the fans would have burned the front office at the stake had they not re-signed him. The fact they’ve guaranteed such small money is a great effort – if he flops, they cut him without lingering damage. If he performs, he’s probably worth it – and this AAV isn’t going to look any worse as the salary cap continues to rise.
Apparently, you have a reading comprehension problem.
Dirtyd27, you are an idiot
Nice to have our QB locked up now let’s figure out the O Line, RB and her get a shit down CB and we can make a push.
For those of you who thought Stafford’s contract was crazy, this one is on a completely different level.
I’m not saying he isn’t good but he has hardly played.
Don’t get mad, get E-trade.
Stafford’s contract is crazy because he’s proven to be a mediocre QB who can’t beat real competition for the 9 years while Garoppolo looks like a legit franchise QB
7-0 Dude. Money talks. Looks like the 9ers are back on top in the West and all the NFL in 2 years. Wow!
Also have to factor in the 9ers had 100+ million in cap space
Jimmy declined 4 years 18 million. Turned that into 130 million. Props to him
Carson Wentz ‘ bank account says Thanks, Jimmy..
What does his knee say? Wentz still his 3 years left on his rookie deal and needs to show he’s healthy again..The market will be reset another couple times before he even comes up for free agency
If Wentz comes back with no problems then he will end up with the biggest contract. His numbers are better and he has proved more. There’s no way in hell i would never giving Jimmy G that contract. I would have tagged him forthis, see how he does this year and if he does it again then give him a big contract but just after 7 games isnt enough to convince me. I know he went 7-0 but like i said if he is tearing it up again next year they could sign him middle season. If they tag him its only 1 year if he shits the bed.
But this deal is really just 2 years because the rest is non-guaranteed, and he only gets 19.5 million next year I think which is not a lot for a starting QB.
But he get like $54 Million this year with his bonuses and 6.5 salary!! What about that?? That does not count since next year is only $19.5?
Jesus you could have paid him $23 million this year on the tag and saved $27 million if he is no good.
Wow you think its cool that only two years are guaranteed? Well that is 2 years at $74 million guaranteed!! That is $37 per year!!
Maybe for that guarantee you could have made it 4 year guarantee not 2 years!
Get it now? Its not “cool” that its only 2 years of guaranteed money when you are guaranteeing $74 million!
Lol same comment as above, this guy has no idea
Why does his bank account say that?
This contract is basically a bigger version of the Glennon contract. Possible answer to your QB troubles and if he flops, it’s only a two year commitment during which the team can afford to carry him on the roster.
Disagree. Its “only” 2 years if guaranteed money for $74 million! Respond to that please.
Glennon was guaranteed 1 year at $18 million. Big overpay but well under a tag amount that is $23 million this year.
So Jimmy G could be tagged for 2 years at maybe $50 million with the tag increase next year.
Instead they give him $74 million! A 50% overpay! But instead of tagging him for 2 years they do a “cool” contract and say hey its only 2 years? Shrew negotiators they are not!
What dummies. They over paid the 2 years by 50% and $24 million! Terrible. Just terrible.
They have the money to spend right now. What other moves are they making to fill up their cap space? This provides a long term solution now and in a couple years this will prove a bargain as passers will be eclipsing the $30mil mark. No need to be upset about it, it’s not your money and it’s not pushing the team against the cap and preventing other moves.
Usually BBs rash choices pan out. Like letting Randy Moss go, still won after him. But can’t make too many in 1 season. Jimmy G trade, TB12 trainer fiasco, Benching Butler in SB. Seems like this year he saw the train wreck in NY, said F it, I’m a Giant in 2018.
Oh but he is not a Giant in 2018 and was never going to be and everyone knows that
The Pats has a chance to win the SB at the end and blew it. If they come back to win B.B. looks so much smarter and NE fans aren’t crying.
Exactly. NE was only a play or two from winning the Super Bowl. “Belicheck indomitable genius”, “Patriots Black Magic”, “Never bet against Brady” would have been the headlines.
