In the aftermath of the Patriots’ loss to the Eagles in the Super Bowl, tight end Rob Gronkowski was asked about the possibility that he could retire this offseason. Gronkowski indicated that retirement is at least a possibility, though he has not made a determination one way or another.
“I don’t know how you heard that, but I mean I’m definitely gonna look at my future for sure,” Gronkowski said (via Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, on Twitter). “[I’ll] sit down the next couple weeks and see where I’m at.”
Gronkowski won’t turn 29 until May and remains one of the league’s very best tight ends. However, he may be thinking about moving on from the game after a big hit from Jaguars safety Barry Church left him with a concussion. Gronk, who has plenty of money in the bank thanks to endorsement deals, is due to make $8.25MM in 2018 and that might not be enough to make him return for another season if he is having doubts.
This past season, Gronkowski hauled in a team-high 69 catches for 1,084 yards and eight touchdowns. He also turned in another stellar performance on the game’s biggest stage with nine catches for 116 yards and two scores against the Eagles. If the Patriots want more of that, they may have to try and coax Gronkowski to come back out for another season – and that may mean offering him a sizable raise.
He’s made a lot of money and takes so many shots, hanging it up at 30 might be the smart move. Plus, he has his professional wrestling career to consider.
Let him go! He’s a moron!
He’s not a moron whatsoever, he’s financially very smart and yes he’s goofy but he’s not dumb or a moron. The fact you say let him go shows how much of a moron you are because he’s one of the best TEs to ever play the game.
I don’t think it’s his career he should be considering, it’s his health that should be on his mind first.
I’d be scared to death if I took all those shots. With all the documented health concerns surrounding that, I’d retire immediately if I was in his shoes. I don’t care how much money he’s made, I wouldn’t want to have to face CTE at any point of my life. How many former players have been driven to suicide or psychologically have had serious issues due to it? Scary stuff man.
If I were were him… I’d retire while he has some health. Takes a lot of hits, has all the money he needs. He’s young enough to still enjoy life. Couldn’t blame him at all
Good retire send a message. Nfl needs to address cte and concussion problem
How does the nfl address CTE and concussions without completely changing the game though?
for one the hit on cook should be a penalty.
you can’t hit a defenseless receiver in the head but can hit a runner in the head?
plus they need to educate the players more and more. the issue the NFL has is it can’t bring in players with concussions to talk to current or prospective players because of the legal claims they currently face but they should to limit future damage.
You can’t really think the Cook hit was a Penalty. Cook legit ran in circles then turned back at the last second. How is a defender running as full speed supposed to know he’s going to turn fully around. I would never wish injury on anyone but that was his fault for dancing rather than getting upfield.
The hit by Gronk on the Bills’ White is a better example.
Was going to say same thing!
Cool ran in circles then ducked down! You could say defender was defenseless as he was in tackle position and receiver lowered head into him?
what do you want flag football? anyone who has played sports knows how it’s virtually impossible for a defender to change direction once a player moves into a spot like that.
the league has made some improvement in safety and has some work, but much like there is no guarantee you are complete safe in a car driving the same goes for the game of football. there will always be some risk
Can’t see a solution. And I personally believe the players take on that risk when they choose to become professional’s. They have the option to get a normal job.
I think he gets a raise. He starts playing a little more cautiously. He doesn’t have to take all the big hits and still be a beast. Win one more and make another 20 million in 2-3 years.
He wants to be paid as #1 TE and deserves it. BB will say no, little Kraft will say yes and that is one step closer to the exit of BB. Kraft has to be suspicious to protect pats….gave away jimmy when other teams would have given more….benches butler…causing division with TB by freezing out his trainer. The End.
ahhh conspiracy theorists
Gronk to be the poster boy of the XFL in 2020
LMAO, fake news. Gronk is to stupid to do anything logical. Him play more football, him make more money, him get more porn star girlfriends.
too stupid, you mean.
The irony here is incredible
Harry Hood, as the captain of the grammar police, I would’ve expected proper capitalization and a complete sentence. Glad you were able to understand the message though.
This is all fake. Just upset about losing the game. No way he retires
Gronkowski mulling retirement smacks of the typical Patriots sore loser comments.
Nah he is just taking… Cutting a 20 mil check and he will be there, hits or otherwise…
He won’t retire
That dude is a beast but he take a lot of big hits and he’s has had a hard time staying healthy so I wouldn’t be surprised if he retired but I think he comes backfield or one more season and retires after next season.
He has enough money to live a very comfortable life until death. He has multiple championships. He will go down as one of the best tight ends ever. It’s his decision, but I see no reason for him to return with all the injuries he has incurred during his career.
