While Kirk Cousins is likely to unseat Jimmy Garoppolo for the richest contract in NFL history once free agency kicks off, his reign might not be a long one. That’s because the Packers and two-time MVP Aaron Rodgers have already begun working on a new contract, ESPN’s Rob Demovsky writes.
Green Bay’s president Mark Murphy told ESPN the two sides have made progress on a new deal despite the quarterback being signed through the 2019 campaign. “We’ve had discussions with his representative. I have a lot of confidence in Brian [Gutekunst] and Russ [Ball] and Aaron as well. We want to create a win-win.”
In 2013, Rodgers signed a five-year, $110 MM deal to become the NFL’s highest-paid player. Demovsky notes Rodgers now ranks sixth among the league’s top salaries. At 34 years old, Rodgers can conceivably play at least five more years barring injury. He is scheduled to make $20.6 MM this year and $21.1 MM in 2019, according to overthecap.com. Should the two sides reach a speedy agreement, the Packers could add to their current $16 MM in salary cap space.
A six-time Pro Bowl selection and one-time Super Bowl champion, Rodgers got off to a quick start in 2017 before breaking his collarbone in Week 6. He finished the season with 1,675 yards and 16 touchdowns. The campaign marked Rodgers’ second season with at least seven missed games due to injury in the last five seasons.
He should be the highest paid player because I don’t think any one player is more important to his team’s success. However, Packers need to add some pieces so hopefully they find a good balance where his salary isn’t detrimental to that. Salary cap rising every year should help that a bit.
Besides Tom Brady
Not arguing who has accomplished more, but what was the patriots record with their 2nd and 3rd string QB’s the first 4 games last year? Or, without Brady in general throughout his career? Remember Matt Cassel?
Brady has had the better career, with perhaps the best coach of all time. Rodgers is the more talented QB.
Brady has 5 Super Bowls wins— each time with a top 10 defense. Rodgers has had a top 10 defense once in his career… and they won a Super Bowl.
Packers would’ve been 12-4 instead of 7-9 this past year had Rodgers played a full season. That’s why he should be the highest paid QB
Agreed..Rodgers is my favourite QB currently in the NFL. He’s likeable, and he’s incredibly talented. He just needs to stay healthy.
12-4 is a stretch. They went 3-4 Without him. To claim they would have been perfect with him may be a bit heavy, but yes they’re likely over .500 with him there. Have to remember he did play vs the Panthers in week 16 and still played half the game vs the Vikings in week 7. So he didn’t miss as many games as you make it sound. And if they were still in playoff contention he would have been available in week 17. Better to rest up and make a run at it in the next year.
Safe to say Rodgers is a 5 WAR player? Wait.. Where am I?
