Nick Foles was the MVP of the Super Bowl, but his future with the Eagles is far from certain. On Monday morning, coach Doug Pederson all but confirmed that Carson Wentz will be the Eagles’ starter to open up the 2018 season.
“I had a chance to talk to Carson actually on the field, on the podium last night after the game. I told him to take this in, enjoy this moment,” Pederson said on Monday morning (via NFL.com). “He’s a great quarterback and he’s a big reason — I told him you’re a big, big part of why this team won this championship, won this game. I told him that hopefully we’ll be back in this game with him leading the way.”
When asked if the Super Bowl MVP can realistically return as Wentz’ backup, Pederson didn’t have much in the way of concrete answers.
“I knew I couldn’t get off this stage without that question,” Pederson said. “You know what? I’m going to tell you right now, we’re going to enjoy it, we’re going to get on this plane, go back to Philadelphia, we’re going to celebrate with our fans back in Philly. We’ve got a long offseason — well, really a short offseason now. We’re just going to enjoy this moment. I’m happy for Nick, I’m happy for the team. It’s not about one guy, it’s about the team. Like I said, we’re going to enjoy these next few days.”
The Eagles would certainly like to keep Foles as Wentz’s No. 2 in the event of another injury next season and he has proven himself to be more than worthy of his $7.6MM cap charge for next season. At the same time, Foles will likely want to be a starting quarterback again and the Eagles could definitely use some additional draft capital as they pick last in the first round and do not own their second or third round picks thanks to trades. In the coming weeks, the Eagles can be expected to keep the phone lines open as teams inquire about this year’s Super Bowl hero.
Wentz is the starter no doubt. I wonder if they try to trade Foles now while
his value is sky high
Agree
They should. Cardinals should trade for and draft a rookie.
gives them a future QB who can learn from arguing one of the league’s best QB mentors according to many experts and gives fitz a throwing QB for more final season.
Have to trade him. Give him credit… he performed well. But his bubble will burst if any team thinks he’s a starter
Well, didn’t he just start and win in the Superbowl? He didn’t come off the bench did he? So that means he is a starter. Don’t forget he had like a 22 TD/7 INT season as the Eagles starter years before this. Look at all the other QBs starting games. The Bills tried to bench Tyrod for Nate Peterman, that alone tells you Nick Foles is a starter in this league.
Actually had a 27 TD/2 INT Season but your point still stands
Yeah, he put up really insane numbers that year, but did actually watch it? He was more than lucky. In a game against the Raiders he threw 7 TDs, 5 of which could have easily been picks. He played very well in the NFC champ and SB, but he’s not a long-term starter in the NFL.
Yes very lucky took no skill at all every second weekend somebody does the same thing it’s pure luck.
Didn’t say EVERYTHING was luck, but his 27/2 season was the result of some serious luck. Rewatch the Raiders game.
Riley Cooper caught 8 TD passes that year. That pretty much sums up the luck involved.
I admittedly didn’t watch much of that season, you could be 100% right but I’m not trying to act like he’s the best quarterback in the world, just pointing out how stupid it is to not consider him starter material. He’s not elite, but he’s good enough to start games in the NFL.
Trade files to Cleveland for their 3
2nd rd picks
too much. he’s not 25
Hahahaha…..you’re nuts.
Ha ha ha. Cleveland only has one second this year. 3 thirds. I doubt the eagles would get three seconds for Foles. 2 thirds this year and maybe a third next. But that’s a bit high for Foles that’s more the trade they will make with redskins for Kirk Cousins
Foles played great in the playoffs. But let’s be honest. Wentz is a star who almost won MVP. If he were healthy the end of the year he’s your MVP not Brady….
I’m a PATS fan and I even agree with this.
I don’t know what they can reasonably expect to get for him. He flamed out when not involved in a heavy RPO system. I don’t see many starting jobs that run that style of offense. Maybe the Bills?
zona? new coach coming from Carolina
Touché
Maybe he’s not a bad QB guys. He was amazing under Chip Kelly but struggled under Jeff Fisher. Just like Case Keenum and Jared Goff struggled. Maybe it’s that simple. Jeff Fisher is that bad of a coach.
A lot of QB’s struggled under Fisher! To think , the Rams cut Foles just a few seasons ago
and got nothing for him
Wow from Super Bowl MVP to the Browns quarterback.
Not happening.
I know it seems funny it makes more sense than you think the Browns need a quarterback in the Eagles Need draft picks the Brown’s have five in the first two rounds
The eagles are not the type of team to ship nick to a terrible franchise. If he’s traded they will do right by him. I could easily see a team such as the cardinals or bills.
As much as he’d probably be a good place holder I can’t see Philly doin that to Nick. The Browns are in a tough spot – no team with a conscience will trade their QB to Cleveland.
Although The Hoody might send Butler there
these aren’t the same Browns, ridicule them if you want but Dorsey seems like he knows what he’s doing. unlike the clowns that were hired before him. With a Plethora of picks they’ll build a nice little team
Agreed but the ‘current pre draft” state of the Browns is seen as a wasteland to most. Even FA’s will have to be overpaid to come on board until these bounty of draft picks start bearing fruit. Unfortunately there’s not a line of players lining up saying “I want to be part of the Browns turnaround “ – EXCEPT Josh Allenso far
Browns are going to trade for Kirk cousins then need to draft around him.
I don’t know if Wentz makes it back by week 1 tearing 2 knee ligaments
Regardless, Nick secured the next 3 generations of his family with that performamce last night. Winning a Superbowl is one thing, winning a superbowl against the BillBradyEra Pats is abt as good as it gets
The Eagles absolutely have to trade Foles this offseason. They can’t afford him with their current cap situation. It was probably structured with the intent to redo it after the first year, but how can you ask the SB MVP to take a paycut & sit on the bench? Doubt that’s going to happen.
The other problem is that Foles isn’t worth what many fans think he is. He’s not someone who is going to be looked at as a franchise changer, and even though he won the SB and MVP no one is going to pay a premium. At BEST they’ll get a 3rd round pick, and probably a 4th.
Why? Because he’s 29, and other than a few great games here and there (and yes on the biggest stage) he’s been a mediocre NFL player. Teams aren’t spend elite capital on a player like that, and no team is going to look at him as someone to build around. The teams that will look to trade for him are those like Denver/Arizona…teams that have already-built rosters and need a veteran QB at the helm; but they’re also ready to win, and will want their prime picks used for reinforcements, not t give up hoping Foles is elite. Or teams that are rebuilding and want a veteran QB to play in front of the guy they draft (Jets, Giants, Browns, etc.), and also won’t pay a premium to get Foles.
You gotta expect him to go to Arizona.
Foles to the ravens! Alex Collins/ Woodhead in the back, decent WR. Great defense.
Flacco hasn’t looked that good
Lots of people underestimaing the value of a qb in here.
Look for comps to see what he’s worth. A 26 yr old Garoppolo brought back a 2nd round pick after starting 2 games in 3 years, and could have gotten more. A 33 year old Alex Smith was worth a 3rd round pick plus Kendall Fuller even though the team acquiring him had to pony-up 4yrs $68mil to extend him.
A 29 yr old Nick Foles Super Bowl MVP will be worth a 3rd round pick and a fat 8 figure AAV extension no problem.
NE screwed up that Garrapolo trade, they turned down better offfers than that. Also, with only a few games left in his deal he is looking at being franchised. I believe he’ll fetch a late 2nd rounder.
