After Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels rejected the Colts’ head coaching job in order to remain with New England, Indianapolis is restarting its search. The Colts “had a feeling” McDaniels could back of out his agreement, and the club now has three candidates ready to be interviewed within the next two days, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk (Twitter link).
While none of the new contenders for the position have yet been identified, it’s difficult to imagine Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub is not among them. Toub worked with Colts general manager Chris Ballard in Kansas City and has been viewed as a “contingency plan” for Indianapolis if McDaniels bowed out. Indeed, Mike Garafolo of NFL.com (Twitter link) calls Toub a “strong candidate” for the newly-created Colts vacancy.
The other finalist for the Colts’ head coaching job (during the first search) was ex-Texans defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel, but he’s already found another position as the Titans head coach. Likewise, other candidates such as Matt Nagy and Kris Richard have landed gigs with the Bears and Cowboys, respectively, while Baylor head coach Matt Rhule removed his name from consideration during the original hunt.
I love this move! It couldn’t have happened to a better (read: joke) franchise, except possibly the Ravens.
“Had a feeling”? Seriously? Are we stupid here?!
They were so suspicious the ANNOUNCED THE HIRE!!!!
What a joke of a franchise.
What a short sighted, joke of a comment. That’s why you announce the hire so you basically hold him accountable to his agreement or at least try to. By announcing it it makes McDaniel’s look bad, not Indianapolis. For them, it just looks like they got screwed over, which in reality is what happened. He agreed in principle and then bailed.
You’re not supposed to announce something until it’s official. That’s the point of announcing it.
Someone in their PR department really dropped the ball here.
That’s possibly true, but it certainly isn’t beyond the scope of reason to think that when your prospective hire is out signing and offering jobs to assistant coaches that he’s your guy…
Hey isn’t this the same team that traded for Trent Richardson? Enough said
Say what you will about the Colts, they got screwed big time. This will forever tarnish McDaniels and the Patriots franchise. I call major foul and I hope the NFL investigates.
how does this tarnish the PATS?
Just proves Robert Kraft is a classless asshole like everyone outside of Boston knows
There was never a signed contract so what are they gonna investigate. Colts shouldn’t have made announcement until contract was signed. Tarnished? I don’t think so, y’all can hate them all you want. You only hate them cuz you can’t beat them. Surprised you guys haven’t traded Luck yet.
He backed out cause he didn’t want to move his family out of the NE area? So why consider to be the Colts head and agree to terms with? This is something he already knew before that’s why he didn’t go to SF. Well he better hopes he becomes HC of NE when Bill retires cause nobody else will consider of hiring him as their HC now.
The Colts are going to hire some bum coach like the Skins did with Jim Zorn way back when…setting an already rudderless team back even further.
What they should do is hand Bruce Arians a blank check to come back for one year to coach the Colts and then do a real coaching search next year.
I’m not if and when the truth comes out. My thought is the colts were trying to push certain guys as the OC down his throat and he just said no.
Frank Reich and John DeFilippo are still available this could be a blessing in disguise
They should interview Keith Butler. Everyone in Pittsburgh endorses this comment.
