After this weekend’s defeat at the hands of the Jaguars, some Steelers minority owners are pushing for the team to fire coach Mike Tomlin, a source tells Mike Florio of PFT. This group of 13 limited partners has no authority over the management of the team, but they “have a pipeline” to main owner Art Rooney and they intend to make their case.
It’s unlikely that this baker’s dozen of shareholders can push out Tomlin by themselves, but they could theoretically influence Rooney to make a move if he is giving any thought to making a change. It’s not clear if that is on Rooney’s radar, even after the disappointing loss to Jacksonville.
Tomlin, of course, led the Steelers to a Super Bowl victory after the 2008 season and guided the team back to the title game after the 2010 campaign. In Tomlin’s eleven seasons at the helm, the team has missed the playoffs only three times and has never finished worse than .500. The Steelers are also not known for making hasty decisions with their coaches. The team has had only three coaches since 1969 – Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, and Tomlin.
Get the F outta here. Tomlin, for some minor shortcomings, has done a fantastic job. The defense went through some really tough injuries and it played a major role
In the loss to Jacksonville.
I hope they keep Tomlin! That way he can keep calling stupid play calls late in games and help the Steelers continue to lose big games!
Tomlin hasn’t done anything. Cowher built the team he has and his wins are due to Big Ben rather than his own coaching ability. The defense would have been mediocre even without injuries–they didn’t keep a bad Jacksonville O under 40 points. Get your brain checked out.
There will be a feeding frenzy for this man is he’s fired.
Any other team can have him and his “Idiot’s Guide to Football Coaching”. Just give him some crayons.
Tomlin is underrated
Did you see some of his decisions against Jacksonville? I’ve always defended Tomlin, his record speaks for itself. But this team consistently plays down to its competition and there is at least one series or plays that show how he can be out coached.
There is no way he will be fired but I could see Haley being a compromise. Haley with all his knowledge for some reason can’t get all these weapons to work. If Haley was worth what he appears to be he’d be a head coach elsewhere. But his off field issues and inability to have consistency puts him on the block. They won’t fire Tomlin and Haley will be the scapegoat.
The Steelers has over 500 yards yesterday. Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell have consistently been league leading performers. Not sure what else Haley needs to do. Some of the 4th down play calling was suspect but idk why everyone thinks the Steelers defense would’ve held the Jaguars down after how pathetic they’d been all day
And who’s fault is that? Butler? The players? Not Tomlin’s though, right? Damn, dude.
@acarneglia You meant OVERrated, right? Typo, for sure.
That’s funny. Underrated.
You mean overrated
Bradshaw is right when he called Tomlin a cheerleader more than a coach. A good coach would have his team ready for game day but he never does it seems.
I disagree. Tomlin seems to do a good job of getting his team ready for game day. I think this week’s matchup got the better of him as he has been looking forward to the Patriots rematch since the regular season matchup.
So winning a Super Bowl isn’t team ready?
Harrison must be one happy lb right now. Pitt fans and players will watch him advance to the super bowl Sunday. Typical BB move that brings the best out of so called “washed up” player. Let the butt hurt begin.
Lol you still talking about Harrison? That’s lame. Typical troll.
if they keep Tomlin, they need to change O & D coordinators. and also special teams coach.
I’m not a Steelers fan so I haven’t watched them this year, but their special teams seemed to be really good against the Jaguars. Has their special teams coach been that bad this year?
I get the heat on Butler and Haley, but Smith?
I can’t think of any problems I have with him.
Haley is the one running the offense and if you ask me he was making some very stupid play calls in that loss. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was fired by if they fire Tonkin I’d be shocked and very disappointed.
He should be fired. He has no control of that locker room. He’s more of a friend to them, not an authority/coach. They were not prepared whatsoever for Jacksonville, instead they talked about an imaginary AFC Championship game against the Patriots, and he allowed it to happen and in some cases joined in. Tomlin is overrated and should be let go. Let that send a message to the team
Well said.
I agree with most of what you said, but he’s not overrated. He won a Super Bowl and took another team to the Super Bowl. He’s a players coach, but he also seems to (at least towards the beginning of his tenure) command respect from the locker room and can be tough on his guys, especially his stars. He got away from thst this year, especially with the buildup to the Patriots game and the potential playoff rematch. I don’t think it would necessarily be a bad idea to move on from Tomlin if only to get a new voice in the locker room. But Tomlin is definitely not overrated.
So who should they hire to replace Tomlin, there’s really not anyone better who’s available.
Bring Cowher our of retirement.
A guy who hasn’t coached in over a decade?
Raiders just did it! It’s Vogue!
Yea and I predict they’ll regret it.
I heard Bill Belichick might be available this offseason.
While I’ll agree they were looking ahead and that’s the coaches job to stop that kind of behavior and get them to focus on the opponent and to never overlook any team I don’t think that’s enough to get him fired. He is far from overrated, he’s actually a very good coach and they couldn’t do better at all, at least not with most candidates already taking other jobs. I really believe this loss has more to do with being injured on defense, not having as good of a defense as Jags and terrible play calling by Haley. Haley has to go, not Tomlin.
Outside of Shazier who else was injured (that plays/played a major role) from the Steelers defense? Shazier is a huge piece and a nearly irreplaceable part as well, but its not like the Jaguars offense is an elite offense either (this coming from a Jags fan). Fournette is solid and the O-line has been pretty solid all year, but Bortles is inconsistent and is throwing to an ancient tight end (Lewis) and two journeymen (O’Shaugnessy and Koyack) as well as a bunch of young receivers (Westbrook and Cole, who are both rookies, and Mickens who is a second year player who didn’t have any real game time until injuries forced him into a spot) and two WR3s (Lee and Hurns, both of whom were basically non factors in the game).
I agree that the differences in their defense and the playcalling played a big part, I think a big part of this loss can be attributed to the players and coaches looking ahead to New England. Pittsburgh woke up before the half ended, but they came into the game overlooking the Jaguars. Especially the defense. The turnovers didn’t do much to help them, but they were giving up big plays to the Jags.
Preach driftcat. He inherited Cowher’s team, and everyone knows the draft picks are owned by Kevin Colbert. Tomlin is a players-friend, not a players-coach. Plus, for those that don’t know, google the incident between Tomlin and Joey Porter at their son’s high school game.
Total as_s.
After the term “has no authority over management of the team” the artical should have ended. If they don’t like it they can sell their shares.
Artical?
I think that Shazeer fella was the difference maker. Steelers defense wasn’t the same without him. Can’t blame Tomlin for that.
I mean Shazier. Can’t edit my own post.
