Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur is one of the more sought-after head coaching candidates this year, and as Adam Schefter of ESPN.com writes, one of the reasons for that is that he could bring current Vikings QB Case Keenum with him.
Shurmur has interviewed with four different clubs already, and two of those teams — the Cardinals and Giants — could be classified as “quarterback-needy.” Keenum, of course, is one of this season’s feel-good stories, stepping in for the injured Sam Bradford to lead Minnesota to a first-round bye. He is 11-3 as a starter this season, completing 67.6% of his passes, throwing for 22 touchdowns against just seven interceptions, and posting a 98.3 quarterback rating in the process.
Luckily for Keenum, and for teams in search for a quarterback, the Houston product will become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end. As Schefter writes, Keenum and Shurmur have developed a close working relationship and think very highly of each other, leading league sources to believe that the two men could depart Minnesota as a package deal.
The Vikings will take on the winner of today’s Saints-Panthers matchup next week.
Pulling a Tony D?
Vikings could franchise tag him to prevent that.
do you want to pay him 22milion?
Vikings aren’t my team, I don’t care what they pay him. Just saying it’s an option. Tag him and make him prove he can have another good year before committing long term.
He’s not worth that price tag unless the Vikings think he’s the franchise QB. If they see him as a solid QB being helped by the system/a good defense, he’s not worth the franchise tag.
Don’t see the Giants being interested in Keenum unless the plan is to trade Eli/let him walk. Even then, what is Keenum’s asking price? If he’s asking for a multi-year deal worth $20m a year, a team is better off hiring someone else as the HC.
Eli can’t walk away, I think you mean “let him go”. Regardless, I don’t think Keenum and Shurmur are a package deal. Might just be a selling point for Shurmur.
Eli can walk away.. it’s called retirement and signing a media deal. Then he could sign for a team during the pre-season, who has a severe injury to their starting QB, and desperately needs a proven signal caller.
I don’t see it happening.
If anyone hires Putrid Pat Shurmur as a Head Coach, look at what he has done as a Coordinator before this year, and look at what he did with the Browns. The only reason he ran the ball as much as he did this year seems to be he did not have Sam Bradford or a Former Browns QB playing. No one should hire any former Browns HC, Coordinator etc as a Head Coach.
Look up Bill Belichick’s bio.
