Packers new general manager Brian Gutekunst has many routes he could potentially take in his first offseason at the helm. Making a splash at tight end in free agency is one of the possibilities according to USA Today’s Pete Dougherty.
Going after a big name at tight end isn’t unfamiliar territory for the Packers, who swung and miss on their signing of Martellus Bennett in 2017. The team had some success with Jared Cook in recent years, but have lacked a consistent, big-bodied pass catcher at the position for years.
One name that Dougherty thinks should be on the team’s radar is Jimmy Graham, who is unlikely to return to the Seahawks in 2018. The veteran tight end secured his fifth Pro Bowl selection after tallying 57 receptions and 10 touchdowns in 2017.
Adding Graham to a receiver corps that includes Davante Adams, Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb would give the team arguably the best pass-catching group in the NFL. Throw in the fact they would also have Aaron Rodgers slinging them the ball and Green Bay’s offense could be a matchup nightmare for defenses.
Graham was the NFL’s top-paid tight end the last four years with average annual salary valued at $10MM. He will almost assuredly not command that type of money after four underwhelming seasons in Seattle by Graham’s standards. A return to a pass-happy attack, however, could see the former Saints great reemerge as an elite option at the position.
Just saying, their last tight end signing went real well
Just saying, Bennett has no pride whatsoever. The entire Bennett family is classless. Just ask Michael in Seattle.
Sounds like your basis of assumption is definitely more politically driven
Well did the Packers not know that before they signed Bennett last year? Everyone else knew it.
They let the right one walk away last year. A TE who can stretch the middle of the field should have priority the second Finley had to retire.
I’d like to see the Saints make a play for Graham again. He’d flourish in the Saints offense.
Should go after Martellus Bennett maybe.
Best TE in the draft is mark Andrews, but I think they need a different Sooner in round 1….Orlando Brown. We need OL help badly….and if Brown is still there at 14 you gotta take him.
This would be great but I think the priority should be the DEFENSE.
If Philly doesn’t retain him Trey Burton could be a great pickup. Has good speed and hands stuck behind Ertz and Celek. If Celek retired or is a cap casualty though he could be back in Philly.
Jordy is washed up at best.
Before Rodgers got hurt Nelson had 6 TD in 5 games.
He’s washed up.
53 catches, 6 TDs the ENTIRE year
So you’re telling me he doesn’t finish at 70+ catches and 10+ TD with Rodgers as a starter? Come on man. Is he worth 10M per season no. If Rodgers doesn’t get hurt we are saying a word about Jordy.
Aren’t
Rodgers never throws to Tight Ends so what’s point of getting a good Tight End.
Dude go back and watch the J Fin years, Rodgers would thread darts to him. The offense was scary when we could stretch the middle of the field. J Cook did a nice job for us in that aspect. And honestly who could have called Marty being such a pos? I remember everyone being happy w.that signing including me so unless your captain hindsight no one really saw that one coming. A solid te would open up the offense in so many ways, not to mention, if we get an all around te he could help in pass protection. Trey Burton would be a good snag, not thrilled about Jimmy G but he could definitely help us in the red zone and stretching the field. Either way the te position needs to be addressed.
2012 Aaron Rodgers threw to TE’s because that was a big part of his game 2018 Rodgers will not throw 90 passes to any TE so spending money on a big name makes little sense.
J Fin was more heavily involved because the run game stunk, not the case today
Rodgers hasn’t had a tight end to throw to incredibly often, either. I agree with others saying Jared Cook did a nice job. It is too bad they let him go. Made the offense look a lot different when he was out there. There’s also been games where Richard Rodgers has been going good in the past. While not terribly often, Aaron Rodgers goes to him more often when its working and it changes then offenses look too. A solid pass catcher at tight end will see a lot of passes.
If Ebron plays like he did in the second half there is no doubt the packers would have the second best corps in the division. Golden Tate, Marvin Jones, and Kenny Golladay. That said, Graham in GB would be a potent combo.
Go after 2 in FA and 1 in the draft. Get a top of league guy and then sign a decent second option like ASJ. Then draft a pass catcher in the 3-5 round.
If they can’t get graham and he’s available, I wouldn’t sleep on ASJ. He looked good as a Jet. Can only imagine Rodgers making him look much better. Burton is a great all around TE and if Celek doesn’t retire and is a “cap casualty” he would be huge as he still has hands and is a hell of a blocker.
Saw him when he played at U Dub (Washington…the other dub)…legit TE…sometimes takes plays off, but just kept having off the field issues. If we can get him for cheap, I’d be for it….draft language in contract that allows gb to cut bait if he can’t stay out of trouble.
adding Graham would give Green Bay the most OVERRATED receiving corps in the NFL.
