It sounds like Eli Manning still has a place in New York. During his introductory press conference on Friday, head coach Pat Shurmur said that he is “looking forward” to working with the veteran quarterback, indicating that he is very much in the plans for 2018.
“I think he’s got years left – how many, I don’t know,” Shurmur said (via the New York Post). “With regard to the draft, I’m not ducking that question … we’ve got to travel down that road of evaluation. … We’ve got a guy here (Eli) who’s helped this organization win Super Bowls, he’s an outstanding player and I’m really looking forward to working with him.”
At this point, all of the key players have expressed interest in moving forward. Back in December, owner John Mara said that he wanted Manning back in the fold, though he stopped short of guaranteeing his return since he had yet to hire his new GM and coach. Before the New Year, Manning himself said that he wanted to stay with the Giants, despite a bumpy 2017. Then, this week, Manning pick up endorsements from GM Dave Gettleman and Shurmur.
Manning, 37, is under contract with the team through 2019 with cap numbers of $22.2MM and $23.2MM. Critics might argue that Manning has lost a step or two, but a good QB is hard to find and his salary isn’t that high compared to others. Manning’s $22.2MM cap hit is still less than that of Matthew Stafford ($26.5MM), Derek Carr ($25MM), Joe Flacco ($24.75MM), Andrew Luck ($24.4MM), Russell Wilson ($23.8MM), and Ben Roethlisberger ($23.2MM).
Of course, even with Manning on board, the Giants could still target Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, or another top quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick in the draft.
I think they’d be stupid not to draft a QB. I am a Eli fan, I think he does have some ears left but they should draft a qb, let him sit behind Manning for two years and the give him the keys to the offense. I think some rookies can come in and do good right off the bat but if you can sit and learn from a coach like Shurmur and a QB like Manning you should only benefit from that.
+1
Making a huge mistake not trading Eli and drafting Rosen. Rosen is a similar player to Eli when he was younger. But albeit with a bigger mouth. Eli would net them a 2/3rd round pick. Maybe a late pick as well. Denver, Jacksonville, Cleveland, Jets, Bills need a QB badly. They need to rebuild the OL to compete and keeping Eli won’t help
But what kind of a price tag can you put on drafting a QB with skills and letting Eli mentor him for a year or two? Rodgers is a pretty fair example as to how well that can work.
No way Eli brings you a 2nd or 3rd
Who is going to give a top draft choice for Eli?
Dorsey wants a veteran QB. But he wants one that has mobility especially Alex Smith. I would not touch Rosen. he is fragile. They needed to hire a better Coach. Putrid Pat is going to get killed by the New York media worse then McAdoo got killed. And killed worse by the New York Fans too. Then he was by the Cleveland fans. Maybe the Giants will bring in Sam Bradford and he will start over Eil and Putrid will again forget about running the ball and get his ass kicked game in and game out.
You still have to have balance or try to have balance to win consistently week in and week out in the NFL. Though it has become a very pass happy league. the teams that are the least pass happy usually win.
Draft Saquon Barkley , fix the O -line and watch how much better Eli plays w a strong running game. Draft a qb next year.
Right on the button. He was never fast but now he’s running for his life.
He’s been sacked over 140 times in the last 5 years, 31 times last year.
Not to mention how many times he’s been rushed
Who is calling the plays for this team that is the Question. If Putrid Pat Shurmur calls his own plays and did not learn from his Stint in Cleveland, or his half season in Minnesota. that would mean last year was an Abomination to his normal coaching style. Pass, Pass, Pass, and Lose, lose, lose. Basically why McAdoo got Fired he did not know how to use the running game. Orleans Darkwa emerged as a Viable threat last year on the Ground. You cannot throw the ball 60 to 70 percent of the time and expect to win unless you have a QB like Aaron Rodgers. A QB who can run makes your Ground game more lethal. If he survives long enough Putrid Pat plans to draft his son as the Giants next QB.
Ahh the conspiracy theories begin
