Last week, Aaron Rodgers was activated off the injured reserve and proceeded to play against the Panthers. Two days later, the Packers placed their franchise quarterback back on the injured reserve. Now, opposing teams are saying the organization “violated the rules regarding players who are eligible to be placed on injured reserve.”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that “multiple teams” have complained to the NFL about the apparent violation. NFL rules say a player needs to suffer a new injury that would sideline them for six weeks in order to be placed back on the injured reserve. If a team violates that rule, they’re required to release the player once they’re healthy.
Rodgers played the majority of the game last weekend, completing 26 of his 45 pass attempts for 290 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. The Packers did pull him from the game because he was “sore,” and the team placed him back on the injured reserve on Tuesday. Had the team still had a chance at the playoffs, the Packers could have continued to roll with Rodgers, but the team ultimately decided to shut him down for the season… which many teams claim breaks the IR rule.
As mentioned, if Rodgers didn’t suffer a new injury, the Packers would be required to release him once he’s healthy. As Schefter writes, no one expects the NFL to force Green Bay to cut their franchise quarterback, but these rival organizations want an explanation on why the Packers “were being granted immunity.”
Rodgers ultimately finished his 2017 campaign having completed 64.7-percent of his passes for 1,675 yards, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. His seven games played was his lowest total since he became a full-time starter back in 2008.
Will he come back then in week 17?
All they have to do is claim another kind of injury! That’s easy this time of year. These guys all have multiple injuries at the end of the year
To be on the injured reserve list it takes a pretty major injury, one that would require six weeks or more to heal. That would be a tough injury to fake.
So they release him just to resign him back to new contract. Like he would leave them anyways. Just a waste of time.
It’s the rule and should be enforced. And yes.. he becomes a FA and can sign anywhere. He will sign back I’m sure… but on a less team friendly contract.
If he gets released, Rodgers goes to waivers. So if the NFL turn on the Packers for once, the Browns will go 11-5 with Rodgers and Gordon
He’s been in the league over 6 years and wouldn’t be required to go through waivers
After trade deadline you MUST go to the waivers first.
Even if he’s claimed on waivers he then counters that with retirement like James Harrison did with the Bengals a while back.
i believe they’d incur cap penalties for releasing him, so that would be a downside to having to resign him. Not that it matters the league will probably just fine the Pack for breaking this minor rule.
If this was the Patriots there’d already be a full blown investigation with fines, suspensions and mass hysteria!!
Like the 1 game suspension Gronk got this year the NFL turned their head to right?
True, people would be demanding Brady’s release. Goodell would have already launched another bogus and “unbiased” investigation.
You’re drunk if you seriously think the NFL would force the Pats to release Brady. Teams do this all the time. Usually it’s placing a guy on IR who doesn’t need the full 8 weeks to heal to open a roster spot. Same exact thing.
Maybe you’re not aware of deflategate. The nfl would already have Wells on the case if this were the patriots.
This is so f’n petty.
It’s not petty. If he were released he would sign the biggest FA contract in the history of the NFL. The NFLPA wants to see that happen and will probably get involved.
The NFLPA doesn’t want to see Rodgers not in Green and Gold. You sound uneducated.
It’s not petty at all. Any other player, the NFL would force the team to release them in a heart beat, and every other team knows this. What the point in making these rules if you’re only going to have them apply to certain players?
And the Packers KNEW about this rule too, but chose to go ahead and ignore it because they knew the league wouldn’t enforce the rule. Makes the league look pretty bad IMO
Oh so they’d force the Pats to cut Brady or Gronk? Panthers to cut Newton? Come on man. You sound petty here. People complaining about a 7-8 Packers team this year.
Rules are rules. I think if it’s a rule and it’s broken then no matter the player or team it should be upheld and the player released. I’m a Pats fan and I love Brady almost more than I love the Pats, but if the Patriots were stupid enough to break the rule then they should have consequences. Same for any player on any team.
That’s funny – a Pat’s fan caring about rules all of a sudden.
It really is
Rodgers to the Browns
Dilly dilly
You all do realize the NFL had to sign off on placing him on IR right? NFL teams do this ALL THE TIME. You all are off your rockers if you think the NFL forces the Packers to release Aaron Rodgers. Not to mention all the clowns on here saying he has to go through waivers and could get “claimed”. Not understanding football at its finest.
And if teams do it all the time, than one of two things should be done. Either remove that rule immediately. Or go back and dole out the punishment of releasing players that the rule was broken for on every team since the rule was made. I’m not singling out the packers. And I don’t really care if that would make a mess in the nfl. Rules are rules and should always be upheld or ripped up for good.
Until your team does it or gets caught right?
“Wahhhhh” – other teams that are complaining
Who the F$ck cares!!!!!!! Waaaaaaa Waaaaaaa
