Herm Edwards is a head coach once again, but this time in the college ranks. He’s been hired by Arizona State to become the next head coach of their football program, according to Doug Haller of AZCentral Sports (Twitter link). There will be a press conference tomorrow to officially announce the news.
In part of a statement released by the Arizona State Athletics Director, Ray Anderson, he addressed the vision he sees for the program under such a big name in the football industry.
“Our goal for this football program is to reach unprecedented heights, and therefore we need to find a way to operate more innovatively and efficiently than we have in the past,” said Anderson. “In the spirit of innovation, our vision for this program is to have a head coach who serves as the CEO and is the central leader with a collaborative staff around him that will elevate the performance of our coaches and players on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Equally important, the head coach will be a dynamic and tireless recruiter.” (Courtesy of Mike Jurecki of ArizonaSports.com on Twitter).
Edwards, 63, is best known in the NFL for his tenure as head coach for both the Jets and Chiefs. He led New York to a 39-41 regular season record, including going 2-3 in postseason play. In Kansas City, the fiery head coach appeared in the playoffs once in three seasons before being fired after a tumultuous 2-14 campaign in 2008.
He has not coached at the collegiate level since 1989, when he was a secondary coach at San Jose State, but brings ample amount of experience during his time in the pro ranks.
Edwards had not been recently speculated for any openings in the NFL, but it’s always interesting to see how tenured professional coaches perform at the college level of the sport. While it’s a completely different game than what Edwards has been used to from coaching in the NFL, then being an analyst of the league for many years at ESPN, the veteran coach should bring a real brand recognition to the Pac-12 school.
Best known for the Miracle at the Meadowlands…..Pisarcik’s fumble. SunDevils had a nice lil feisty competitive program not that long ago, good to add some new blood to PAC-12, Chip in Westwood too.
Bout to be a party animal down there lol
Good hire.
Not really, he’s been detached from the locker room too long and should’ve stayed in the booth.
That’s your opinion and I’ve stated mine. He knows a lot about football in general and I think he will do fine
Back coaching is one thing, sitting in living rooms begging kids just barely old enough to drive to come play for him will remind him why he was in the booth. I see failure all over this.
And you could tell it drives him nuts to be in the studio all the time. He wants to be out there coaching.
I completely agree, Nate.
This guy was a pro player, nice career, was HC for 2 different organizations, has been on tv weekly getting paid to express his knowledge, opinions bout NFL for along time….this man is gonna have those 17 yr ols eatin outta his hand, makin the promises they all do w/added touch of, “I been there, I played, I was HeadCoach….son u got it, I can develop it, I….I can take u too the next level,” plus he’s a character guy, always stand-up dude….Valley Of The Sun Is Back ! AND ASU is always top 10 as party school & hottest coeds, who can’t recruit that….? Son u wanna be in Iowa all winter or here where girls wear bikinis on campus yr round….?
Terrible hire. He’ll be back in the studio within 3 years
The way ESPN is letting analysts go, I doubt it!
I have a choice now. I can watch sports talk show on ESPN or a Fox sports talk show with ESPN analysts. Watched CBS NFL game with Danny Kannell doing game thinking wasn’t he just on ESPN’s Kannell and Russo? Watched ESPN Sports Nation with Marcellus Wiley saying his contract was up. Oh no!
Wow didn’t see that coming
Doesn’t hurt to have your friend the asst. AD. Like Herm but he needs to stay in the booth.
Latest ESPN casualty!
Can’t believe they didn’t hire Schiano he was clearly the top candidate.
Schiano will get paid by Tennessee!
That will depend on who actually signed the MOU. Sounds like it was just Schiano and the AD. Chancellor and President of the school also need to sign it for it to be official.
Interesting. My guess is he was gonna be cut as an analyst so he went out and got what he could. I wonder how long this will last.
Like Rick Pitino, the courts will decide!
Of course Thomas if and when he files a suit against UT. Still shocked he hasn’t been linked to any of these other openings, maybe Jimmy Haslem will hire him for the Browns job at the end of the season. Heard Jimmy is a big fan of his.
That’s the funny thing. Peyton was trying to talk Mike Gundy into taking the job. Haslem was the guy who’d pay whoever they choose. Haslem wants Peyton. (He won’t do it!)
If I’m Schiano, associate head coach-defensive coordinator at Ohio State is a better job than Tennessee or the Browns. I agree with whoever wrote the Browns front office is the worst of any sport. And with the guys who say Carson Wentz wouldn’t make it with the Browns.
Agreed, nothing to do with this post but the Browns are the worse ran organization in any sport I think. Eventually they will figure it out I’d imagine, they need to hire a GM and coach together like the 9ers did and let them work together on rebuilding the team which won’t happen in one offseason it’ll take years but they’ve gotta start somewhere.
The problem is nobody good wants to work for the Browns, like the quarterbacks don’t want to come to Cleveland.
Think Jake Plummer has any eligibility left?
