It’s official – the Giants are going back to Eli Manning as their starting quarterback, according to NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo (Twitter link). Manning will be under center this weekend as the Giants face the Cowboys in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Mired in a lost season, the Giants made a daring move to bench Manning on Sunday in favor of Geno Smith. The decision ended Manning’s streak of 210 consecutive NFL starts and caused an uproar among Giants fans. There’s little doubt that the ensuing controversy sped up the inevitable for coach Ben McAdoo and GM Jerry Reese.
At 2-10, the Giants aren’t playing for much this year, but the outcome of these next four games will help shape the offseason. If Manning plays up to par, it’s conceivable that he could return as the starting QB in 2018, though that might require some healing between the two-time Super Bowl champ and team ownership. Manning remains under contract through next season, but the team must decide whether to keep him before his $5MM roster bonus comes due on March 18.
Manning, 37 in January, has completed 62.5% of his passes with 14 touchdowns against seven interceptions this year. He currently ranks as the 18th best quarterback in the NFL, per Pro Football Focus. For what it’s worth, the advanced metrics have not been a big fan of his work over the last five seasons. In 2011 and 2012, however, he rated as a top five passer in the NFL.
Dan Graziano of ESPN.com (on Twitter) first reported that Manning would be reinstated as the Giants’ starting quarterback.
Good
This looks like a very dysfunctional franchise.
Giants fan here. Why reinstate Manning after the PR fiasco that has been the last week? I agree he shouldn’t have been pulled, but the streak is already over. Now we need to see what Davis Webb can do to see if we need to be looking to draft a QB 2nd overall next year.
I think the fact that they refuse to even consider Webb should tell you they’ll be taking a QB high in the draft.
Who says you’re picking second? One more win and you’re right back to third lol
We will trade up to where we need to be
This doesn’t make any sense.
What a mess. This past week has been very jets/browns like which is sad because the giants are supposed to be a front line organization. It’s also a shame to see Eli’s streak end for no reason. And this is coming from a niners fan but I respect what he has done for them.
I am an Eagles fan and absolutely hate everything about the giants. With that said, myself, and many others around here were confused by Eli’s benching and even felt sympathetic towards him. He deserves better than how macadoo treated him and it was the coach and front office who was responsible for the losses this season.
Maybe this is showing that ownership wasn’t on the same page with management. With the firing of both the GM and HC, maybe they’re paving a way for Eli to return to Big Blue next year.
Insightful
Saw that coming. Gotta make sure to make it seem like every thing they did was terrible and that’s why they got fired lol. It’s a shame to me that Eli lost his streak of consecutive games just for one game. I’d personally be pissed if I was Manning. Even if they did fire that clown I’d want to leave this offseason after all this nonsense
I dont like Geno as a QB but he was 100 percent right. Rex Ryan is a coward. nevertheless this is Eli’s job
This basically ends Davis Webb’s career in New York. Why go with Eli for 4 meaningless games when you could see what you have in Webb. Besides, you should want to lose the games anyway to ensure yourself of a top 3 pick.
Kind of odd for the Maras. Hopefully, they’ll get their house in order soon.
As A Cowboys fan I hope this is a sign of good faith to Eli and he stays in NY for the rest of his career. This year is their best year to draft a top QB. I personally would rather watch Eli throw INTs for a few more years.
Basically ended the streak for nothing. It was about all the Giants fans had going for them this season
Sucks for Eli the streak ended in such a dumb way but he was never going to catch Favre anyway.
Sucks his streak is over though. I’d be mad and wouldn’t even want to play for that team next year. If the Redskins lose Cousins go to the Redskins and stick it to the Giants next season lol
What a clown show!!
Who would have thought the Jets would like the the more together franchise… like EVER?!?!
All that to ruin his streak. That sucks.
