On Wednesday, the Giants suspended second-year cornerback Eli Apple for conduct detrimental to the team. With the suspension, the team could have cleared the way to release the 2016 first-round pick without having to pay his contract guarantees for 2018 and 2019, ESPN’s Dan Graziano writes.
Graziano says Apple’s contract includes a clause that allows the team to void his guaranteed money if “among other things, ‘Player is suspended by the NFL or by the Club’ or ‘Player engages in conduct reasonably judged by the Club to adversely affect or reflect on Club, in Club’s sole discretion.'”
Graziano reports the Giants could then argue that they wouldn’t be on the hook for his guaranteed salaries of $1,827,484 in 2018 and $2,516,226 in 2019 if they were to release him.
To say this has been a roller-coaster ride for the Giants is an understatement. The team entered the 2017 season as Super Bowl contenders with one of the most promising secondaries in the league. It will end, however, with captain Landon Collins calling Apple a cancer and the team suspending the young corner for a series of events we detailed earlier in the day.
The writing appears to be on the wall for New York to cut ties with the No. 10 pick in last year’s draft at the end of the season.
I’d think they could trade him for 6-7 round pick instead of releasing him. I know he’s damaged goods but there might be a team or two that takes a chance on his talent in the hopes of new scenery matures him. He def needs an attitude adjustment tho.
Nope. No team will give even a 7th round pick when they know he will get cut and they can get him for free. And wouldn’t the Giants be on hook for most of contract regardless if cut? Only advantage to a team to do a trade is not competing with other teams if he is cut and becomes a FA I would think.
That’s why I’d think a team would sacrifice a 6-7 for him….to avoid the bidding war. Low risk.
A 7th round pick has 0 value and you at least guarantee landing apple.
Lots of good players get taken in the 7th round. Not if your GM is Jerry Reese, but still…
However gets this kid is getting a steal but the Giants are dumb so I won’t be surprised
Apple is bad and a distraction. How are the Giants dumb?
Odds of him becoming a Patriot ???
Not great. It’s team first in New England and if you don’t get in line you get cut. That said, a lot of “character issue” players have done well there—Moss, Blount, Johnson, etc
If they don’t have to guarantee much money I’d think they’d take the risk. They’re going to have to replace Butler somehow, and a recent top 10 Pick seems like a good start. I know he has issues, but cut him if it doesn’t work out, and I think he’s a pretty talented dude anyways he just has to get his head straight.
Good news is a new GM has no attachment to him. There will be no hesitation to cut a guy 2 years removed from the #10 pick
should have sent Apple and this year’s 2nd Rd pick to NE for Jimmy G and gotten a haul for our top pick this year
