Texans owner Bob McNair has not given coaches the green light to audition Colin Kaepernick, despite a report from Howard Balzer of Sports On Earth (Twitter link) indicating otherwise. Balzer now indicates that his tweet was intended to be a joke. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has confirmed that McNair has not signed off on a Kaepernick workout.

The Texans have managed to stay afloat at 3-4 despite injuries to key defenders J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus. Asking them to keep their playoffs alive with Tom Savage under center, however, might be too much to ask. Kaepernick stands as the most polarizing figure in the football world today, so it stands to reason that the Texans may want to see what he can offer. But, for now, there are no plans to kick the tires on the former Niners signal caller.
Last week, McNair found himself in the middle of a major controversy when he likened the player-led anthem protests to “inmates running the prison.” He has since apologized for those remarks.
For now, the Texans will forge ahead with Savage as their starter against the Colts. The newly-signed Matt McGloin will be his backup.
2 questions
1. How does this affect the lawsuit? I’ve been asking myself ever since the lawsuit was announced why a team hasn’t forced his hand, offer him a workout and he refuses then sign of no collusion unless of course it could interfere in anyway with the lawsuit.
2. Why out of all owners to offer a workout is it the one that just made a racist comment, seems fishy a bit. I just doubt someone who strongly opposes kneeling would be willing to hire the person that started it
Seems to me like a way for that owner to save some face. Like “look see I ok’d a workout with Colin, I’m not racially insensitive”. Too bad they already signed a QB.
1. I doubt he would accept the invite because he would have a hard time proving collusion when he is playing for a team.
2. It could be nothing more than a publicity stunt to show that he really isn’t a racist and he will use Kaep to prove his point. The fact that they have already signed Mcgloin makes me think that was floated out there just to trying to change the bad press.
1. I thought collusion involved workouts is all.
2. Kinda weird to try to save face but at the same time sign a white QB seems counter productive
Only said ok as a PR move over his comments
I’m in favor of a look. Same as when the Phins signed Cutler. Matt Moore ain’t good enough. Tom Savage ain’t good enough. Cutler and Karpernick “might” not be good enough, but I’d like to see teams at least take a shot instead of being resigned to mediocrity.
Should he have saved face yes, would any team signing kap be good for the NFL yes, but this is no longer up to teams to make this right but the NFL who has done everything it can to push these issues under the rug. They need to make an official stance on the matter and then deal with there decision. Once again goodell is a terrible commish but won’t go anywhere bc he’s a money maker. Gotta realize you don’t havta be right both in the public eye or private eye if your making someone else millions they will not replace you. NFL is a business not a sport ppl need to realize this. Don’t blame McNair blame goodell for handling this as poorly as he did ray rice, tom Brady, and AP, only to go overboard on zeke to make himself and NFL look good against domestic abuse. Ppl need to realize how much politics play into professional sports. I’m so sick of all this bullshit drama ppl love to help create.
Hire TONY ROMO
While it’s an integral part of any decision regarding bringing in Kaep, let’s leave politics out of this and talk strictly football. Can Kaep help the Texans win? My thought would be yes. While he may not be as. jaw-dropping as Deshaun, it’s not that long ago that Kaep put on one of the best individual displays ever against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers in the playoffs. He was a Richard Sherman tipped pass at the end of the game from playing in back to back Super Bowls. And regardless of not knowing a system, he’s waaaaay better than Matt McGloin and Tom Savage
