Martellus Bennett‘s unusual exit from the Packers and reunion with the Patriots raised some eyebrows in the football world. However, NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart says the league office does not have any issues with how things played out (Twitter link via Ben Volin of The Boston Globe).
The Packers signed Bennett to a lucrative multi-year deal with the expectation that he would be a big, steady target for Aaron Rodgers in the red zone. Instead, Bennett never clicked with the Packers offense, perhaps due in part to his torn rotator cuff. After he intimated that he would retire after the 2017 season, the Packers released Bennett, opening the door for him to be claimed by his former team. It doesn’t take an Alex Jones-level conspiracy theorist to question whether Bennett might have orchestrated his own return to New England, but the commissioner’s office doesn’t share that same skepticism.
After he was cut loose, Bennett instructed his agent to inform interested teams that he might not be able to play due to his injured shoulder. Then, on Sunday, Bennett was on the field for seven snaps and caught three balls for 38 yards. He looked rather healthy in the 41-16 romp over Denver, and that didn’t help to quiet speculation about a potential pre-release arrangement between Bennett and the Patriots.
It’s a closed case in the eyes of the NFL, but the Packers may still go after a portion of Bennett’s signing bonus.
There’s no one to blame but the packers they could’ve put him on IR but they chose not to because they wanted out of the contract the only people who are mad are the pat haters so grow up and deal with it
Wow you really are clueless
Not really. Dude is 100% correct.
You’re just one of those butt hurt Pats haters that can’t deal with it.
Pat lovers
Agreed. Don’t like the Pats.
So what you guys don’t stick up for your teams it’s called hypocrite
Hey NYY how are your Giants doing?
Not at all I am not from NY
Just funny how Aaron Rodgers goes down, retirement talk begins, and then he has an injury that he can’t play and will need surgery. Green Bay cuts him and now all of a sudden he is back with a pro bowl quarterback and can play the game. Both him and his brother are as crooked as they come. Only fitting he goes back to New England.
Wrong. Bennet was talking about retiring before Arron Rogers went down. Plus Bennet said he’s been in pain killers to play through his shoulder injury. Once he got off of them he then realized how bad he had hurt his shoulder so he chose surgery over playing. Then the packers freaked out saying that Bennet didn’t tell them about his injury even though the packers medical staff knew what was wrong. Once he got cut and realized the packers were trying to steal money from him he said “F*** it” and decided to play for the pats. Get your facts straight there kid before you start calling people crooked.
It’s funny how you call the other person out for not fact checking when you didn’t fact check. Bennett posted about retiring on October 28th on his Instagram page. Packers played the Vikings on October 15th. Learn to fact check before you call someone out. Plus if he was going to retire after this year, he would be walking away from his contract leaving 17.15 million on the table. Patriots only owe Bennett 450k. If the Patriots didn’t pick him up, then he would only be out 450k. Please get your facts straight before posting.
He is not going to be losing anything. The fact is that Green Bay had their medical staff check him out head to toe. I mean get real they paid him a lot of money just to sign. If you are going to pay any player millions of dollars just to sign then I am sure that you are going to check him out and make sure he is 100% ready to go. I am sure that if they try to go after any of the money they are most definitely going to lose.
You are missing the point here. If he supposedly has a shoulder injury and needs surgery, how did he pass a physical for the Patriots after being picked up off waivers?
They may have been doing it for next yr 7m is not bad for a good TE or maybe he’s choosing to play through the pain because his on a winning that has a easier trip to the playoffs and super bowl unlike the packers this yr
Anyone remember when Blount left New England, sucked for the Steelers was waved and picked up the Patriots again and killed it for them again. Weird how that happens lol might just be that they have a good system and it’s easy to succeed especially with Brady as QB. Seems like there is always some sort of conspiracy when it comes to the Patriots. I don’t like them, they aren’t my team but they are good and they make others good around them it’s that’s simple
If you use that logic maybe Brady isn’t that good he is part of the system too. It has been said before especially after watching his combine tape.
Before you NE crazies get all bent out of shape I am not saying that I am saying if you follow the same logic. I will say it is odd that players play bad for a team then go back to NE and all of the sudden play good again. Maybe there was a little something going on behind the scenes. Not that NE would bend the rules or anything.
Marty join the Patriots because he was asked. He left the Packers due to lack of respect.
Let’s pump the breaks and see what Bennett actually does for New England this year. We’re just assuming he’s automatically going to be good again. His numbers in his first game back with NE were right in line what what he’d done in Green Bay.
Really he played 6 snaps and had 3 catches for 39 yards wow if he played that good for GB then they are just dumb for letting him go. I can’t wait to see what he does when he plays 25 to 30 snaps look out Raiders.
He’s not going to be asked to play that many snaps if he was the would have cut one of the other 2 TEs
He’s going to more of a decoy or red zone target that’s it probably most of the 3rd downs
He is with the right team and is a great player, he will produce just like he did last year. Teams will need to cover Gronk and Marty on plays.
What a lot of people are disregarding is the NE is the best run organization in the NFL. When a player goes there they are actually utilized properly and put in a position to succeed. It’s happened too many times to count.
The only “conspiracy” here is how people running teams like the Packers keep their jobs year after year making decisions like these!
Bennett told his agent to tell the other teams not to pick him up because he has a shoulder injury and we’ll go have surgery if they do and that’s why the Patriots have him. he’s just a sneaky little liar.
All these people talking about how Bennett’s the scum bag because he didn’t want to play through an injury. How about the team that cut him for having a bum shoulder releasing him after signing him to a three year deal? No wonder the players act this way. Teams expect total loyalty but don’t give it in return. The dude made a business decision. It happens all the time in all major sports. He signed up to play for Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers goes down, the packers look like crap, why not get the surgery now to get ready for next year? If a team released me because I got hurt playing for them I’d fight through the pain just to piss them off. None of you have been in his position so just let it go
Exactly!
This is a valid point of view but the point about signing up to play for “Aaron Rodgers”. a.) injuries happen all the time. b.) more literally, he signed to play for the Packers.
Well said. Look, if I was Bennett I would play for the Pats too just to stick it to the Packers. And I don’t blame him for not wanting to play after Rogers went down. It’s a clearly different team without Rogers and Huntly has a tendency to lead receivers into big hits the way he throws the ball. Bennett already injured clearly didn’t want to risk all by playing for Green Bay.
As for already playing good for the Pats, he only played 7 snaps. Caught 3 balls but again only played 7 snaps. Funny though that we signed Bennett because Allen was a waist of a roster spot other than some skill at blocking, then he finally catches a ball and it’s a TD. So now we have 4 TEs to fill the void in our receivers. From I and Bennett will be the primary TEs, and Allen will come in for relief on running plays while Hollistor will come in for relief on passing plays. Hope Hogan isn’t out long though because he is clearly the best option out of the slot. Amendola is ok, but is too fragile to handle extensive snap count. Cooks is great outside and Dorsett is finally starting to make some noise on the outside also. With Cooks and Dorsett on the outside as the deep threats, that opens the intermediate routes to From I, Bennett and Hogan out of the slot and then short route out of the backfield to Lewis, Burkhead and White. O line is playing much better too giving us a very dangerous and hard to cover offense. That and the fact that the last 4 weeks the Defense has been one of the better defenses in the NFL and again the AFC goes through Foxboro. I don’t think the Pats will lose another game this season. If they do it will be a road game to either Buffalo or Miami. Still will hive them the #1sead in the AFC playoffs and they will win the SB again this year. Brady will have started his career winning the SB 3 out of 4 seasons and will finish his career better winning 4 or 5 in 6 years. He will be gone after his contract is up in 2019, which means we need to find his replacement ASAP so he can sit under Brady for 2 or 3 year learning how to play yhe position in the NFL and learning our offensive schemes. Sux because either Garappolo or Brissett would have been great taking over for Brady. I do Believe Garoppolo will be a franchise QB in SF and also believe Brissett will win most of the games the Colts have for the remainder of the season and will make Luck expendable in the iff season. Colts will trade luck to cleveland or another team in dire need of a QB for a first round pick which they will use on the offensive line to better protect Brissett. I love watching him play in Indy and think he is better than Luck…
I like most of what you said. But you forgot about Gillislee just because he didn’t play this week doesn’t mean he is out. But you lost me on the whole Luck thing there is no way Luck is not the starting QB next year.
Gillisslee was great to start the year off but hos load share has dropped considerably since to the point he was a health scratch last week. Yes he will get more opportunities and I do hope he takes advantage when he does. He was my favorite off season acquisition. I think he has what it take to be a premier lead back in this league but just hasn’t fit in well with the Patriots offense yet. Blocking has also been a problem for him. But now that Marty B is back with us, he could possibly find more holes. So I hope he does find his grove this year..
Now as for luck, I think Brissett will win most of the games left on the slate. He will prove himself to be an above average starter. No he will never be a Brady or Manning, bit he will be better than a lot of other starters in the league. As for Luck, he missed a lot of games last year, a few the tear before and all of this season. He may not be the same QB when he finally comes back, but the Colts can hide that and trade him for at least a first round pick. Maybe even a first and second if Clevland is the trade partner. Kuch has not been himself for quite a while now. So the best option for the Colts is to put your future on Brissett’s arm and get the most you can for Luck before the rest of the League finds out that he is no longer the Luck of the past. Just a watered down version.
But that’s just my opinion..
I believe that you are right as fare as Gillislee. I think his roll this week will be better. The Colts don’t always do what is in the best interest of the team and for that reason Luck will be their starting QB next year. I believe that they will actually trade Berssett next just watch and see. Luck sells tickets and they want to sell lots of tickets.
If they were to trade Brissett they are fool’s. You are right though, they don’t do what’s in the best interest of the team. If they did they would have dumped the GM and Chuck Pagono.. The only time this team won with Pagono was the year he was out and Bruce Arians filled in as head coach. Other than that they h ave been average to below average, and that’s with Luck. Luck was really good under Bruce Arians, other than that he was no better than Brissett is playing now. And Luck doesn’t come close to the big play ability and accuracy that Brissett has. I hate that the Pats traded him. Garopolo wasn’t surprising as he wasn’t going to take back up money knowing someone will pay him to be their starter.. I figured Brissett would have been the air apparent to Brady seeing as how Brissett would still be on his rookie contract when Brady’s contract expires on 2019. He’s not going to play after that. He’ll be 42 and no QB has been affective at 42. Father time will catch Brady or by then he could win 2 more SB’s. Should he do that he will retire after a SB win and go out on top. He will have broken most of Mannings records by then too leaving a legacy no QB will ever come close to beating.. Brady is a first round hall of fame shoe in and will go down as the best ever to play the game.
