Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott will suit up this weekend against the Chiefs. On Friday morning, the running back’s camp won a crucial decision from the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (Twitter link via attorney Daniel Wallach).
The motion for a brief administrative stay will allow Elliott to play in the Cowboys’ upcoming game, but a six-game suspension still looms. He’ll remain in limbo until a three-judge panel rules on his fate. After that ruling, we may finally have some finality on the Elliott saga, though it’s hard to bank on that given the back-and-forth nature of the legal process so far.
There were rumblings of a potential settlement in October, but both sides have gone on the record to say that they are not interested in meeting in the middle. The NFL does not want to set a precedent of players reducing suspensions by using the pressure of the legal system. Elliott, meanwhile, is determined to clear his name of any association with domestic violence.
Elliott, 22, has 690 yards off of 164 carries, giving him the third-highest total in the league and 4.2 yards per attempt. He’s also tied for the league lead with six rushing touchdowns.
If Elliott’s six-game suspension is put into effect after the Chiefs game, he’ll be forced to miss games against the Falcons, Eagles, Chargers, Redskins, Giants, and Raiders. He would not be eligible to return until Week 16 against the Seahawks.
If it delays a couple more games but finally gets suspended can he miss the playoffs?
Doubt it. Suspension only affects regular season games where they receive playoff shares rather than game checks.
The suspension clearly states 6 regular season games, so they have no authority to enforce playoff game suspensions
He can definitely miss playoff games. The only reason it was stated that way before is because the NFL didn’t think it would drag on this long
Maybe the NFL should just start suspending players in advance of them committing violations.
“Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott was suspended by the NFL for 3 games today after Commissioner Goodell had a tarot card session that indicated Elliott would be arrested on a DUI in the future. After confirming this with a palm reading, Elliott was initially suspended for 6 games but upon seeing his appeal via crystal ball, Goodell reduced his suspension to 3 games and Elliott agreed to drop any future appeals and proceeded to get hammered behind the wheel of his car outside a police station to “get this behind him as soon as possible” adding, “I will not let future events rule my life in the present.”
In a related story, when asked why New England was stripped of 8 Super Bowl titles and 9 first round picks for refusing to submit to a psychic investigation of their organization’s future, Goodell stated that all future events will be decided on a case by case basis, while also affirming his deep respect for the -3 Time Super Bowl Champion franchise.
This makes no sense whatsoever lol. Why waste your time writing this?
He’s lonely. Has plenty of time to kill
This is funny, thanks for the 2 minute comedy
This has become a joke. The NFL needs to get out of the judge and jury business. It will keep being a maddening appeal process until they do. If our judicial system finds a player’s guilty of something, then the NFL should act accordingly.
Yet another thing Goodell has messed up on. How the guy keeps getting paid $32M a year is beyond me.
The NFL doesn’t necessarily need to rely upon the judicial system to suspend players. They just need a consistent and fair process. Or Goodell can keep doing what he’s doing. I’m getting to the point that I’m not sure how much I care about this stupid league anymore.
How does this help and grow NFL fan bases? MLB, NHL, NBA all growing why? They don’t have a commissioner that can’t admit when he’s wrong. Imagine being a casual fan and hearing about this it’s a turn off not good for the business at all. I ask if you’re not a Pats fan or Cowboys fan how long until this happens to a player on your team? There’s no doubt as long as Goddell is in charge it will eventually
It doesn’t help. I’m not a huge NFL fan to start with and to be perfectly honest, this year I don’t think I’ve watched 10 minutes of football outside of my own team’s games.
Jourdan Lewis gets accused of DV. Has a trial. Found not guilty. No NFL investigation, no suspension. Zeke accused of DV. Police find they have no case against him and he’s not even charged. 6 game suspension. Seems legit NFL.
