The Ezekiel Elliott saga could be coming to a close. Hearing officer Harold Henderson has informed all parties that he will render his ruling by the close of business on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets.
After a yearlong investigation into domestic violence accusations made against him, Elliott was slapped with a six-game suspension this summer. Both Elliott and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones have said that the allegations are without merit and the running back’s camp has vowed to fight the ban until all options have been exhausted. That includes appealing through the highest levels of the justice system, so Elliott’s battle could continue if the suspension is not overturned or significantly reduced today.
If Elliott does not win his appeal or at least have the suspension reduced, he will miss games against the Giants, Broncos, Cardinals, Rams, Packers, and 49ers. Because the Cowboys have a Week 6 bye, an upheld suspension would delay his 2017 debut until October 29th when the Cowboys take on the Redskins.
Coming to an end? It’s just begun. The court proceedings will take a long time
Crucify ! Crucify!
SHAME!
The challenge for the league is that you continue to see players who make bad decisions, surround themselves with bad people, and do bad things. Couple this with player protests on company time irking not only the league and fans, pushing the league to make punishment harsh enough to stop the bad publicity coming from their players/employees. Like with Martha Stewart, an example might be made to restore some semblance of order.
Unlike Martha Stewart, Elliot has not been found guilty of any crime. Make an example out of the guy who has legally done nothing wrong. Josh Brown admitted to beating his wife for decades, he got 1 game. Seems like the league is cherry picking here
He’s taking it to court regardless. Just give him the six. Courts shouldn’t have any bearing in this matter in the first place. If I beat the shit out of my girlfriend and my work finds out and fires me because of it, what am I to say? Sorry your honor, I won’t act crazy ever again. Let me keep my job? These guys get paid to be atheletes and spokesman for a billion dollar company. They know they are in the spotlight as soon as they sign the papers. If you are willing to give it up to beat your girlfriends and smoke weed constantly, well then maybe you should apply at other jobs.
What he said…
What if it’s a he said she said and no real proof in police/prosecutors eyes? Your job fires you and you don’t think you could/should take it to court. Um ok
If after your jobs HR do their due diligence and feels you put them in a negative position then yes. The NFL did their due diligence and that’s what they came up with.
how do you know they did their due diligence? their due diligence has been very ineffective in the past.
I know the same that you know. They did their research and came up with a ruling. We are fans, not owners or CEOs. We get what we get. I must be in the minority for thinking that if I’m making a ton of money that I’m going to not put myself in situations that may cost me my livelihood.
When was he convicted?
Most states r at will when it comes to hiring and firing. So ur paragraph really isn’t on point. Most of us don’t sign contracts that guarantee millions to go to our 9-5s. This is a matter of whether or not the NFL has the power to suspend based on the speculation of a he said/she said considering there was no arrest or charges pressed against Elliott. And once again weed has nothing to do with this story. It’s legal in some states now so u can’t get fired for doing something legal. Just like someone firing u for drinking a beer after work. So once again the real issue is only what level of power does the commissioner actually have. End of story. In my opinion no conviction of a crime shouldn’t b a suspension.
Your point on weed is pointless. If your job prohibits weed then yes, you will still get fired. Such as the NFL where it’s a league wide rule. So if you get high in Denver after the game and test positive at anytime guess what? You just got in trouble! See Josh Gordon if you don’t agree.
Listen if he actually did it I agree he should be punished. However, who are we to say he actually is guilty. Law enforcement didn’t press charges. Maybe because of who he is but let’s say someone accuses you of a crime and makes up evidence are you guilty just because of another person’s words? None of us really knows what happened. Let’s say your job fires you only to find out it wasn’t true, do you have the right to take action? Yes! I hope he didn’t but if he did he should be punished.
Unless the suspension is fully dropped, this is nowhere CLOSE to being over. This will also drive the nflpa to cause a strike in a few years too. We better enjoy football while we have it cause it’s gonna get real ugly when CBA is up.
Right now I’m not sure the players have the same degree of fan support the used to have.
I get the he said she said. But I’m not costing my business millions in jersey sales, season ticket sales, etc. I’m just making the point that if the NFL thinks they are a governing body then why should courts get involved? What’s the point of having an arbitrator if you still need a judge? This preceding while play a huge role in the next cba negotiations.
Per Tom Pelissero, Ed Werner, and others, “due to the high volume of material”, the “neutral” arbitrator’s decision may not come today after all. Decision will instead be announced immediately after Elliot’s lawsuit is dismissed as “not yet ripe”, and will be followed by the NFL immediately filing suit to uphold its decision in a more friendly court.
This is familiar cough cough deflategate cough cough
What was Ben Roethlisberger suspended for back in 2010?
Seems like everyone was too busy making “Rapelisberger” jokes instead of worrying about a lack of evidence or due process back then.
