The Browns will start quarterback Brock Osweiler in the team’s preseason opener against New Orleans, head coach Hue Jackson announced Monday. And, apparently, it’s not to showcase him to other teams.
Pat McManamon of ESPN.com (on Twitter) hears the Browns are starting Osweiler because he is their best option at quarterback and not because he is potential trade bait. When the Browns first acquired Osweiler from Houston this offseason, it seemed likely that they would flip him to a team desperate for a quarterback. Now, Cleveland seems prepared to keep him for themselves. In fact, the Browns have already turned down a trade proposal for Osweiler this offseason, according to ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter).
“A lot goes into our evaluation but it’s always going to be about efficiently and effectively running the offense,” Jackson said in the press release regarding Osweiler’s preseason start against the Saints. “You want your starter to be able to do that despite any circumstance. Brock hasn’t really gotten any first team reps and this will give him that chance. We look forward to seeing what he can do with this opportunity throughout the week and against the Saints.”
Cody Kessler will serve as the No. 2 QB against New Orleans and he’ll be followed by rookie DeShone Kizer and Kevin Hogan on the depth chart.
I wonder what the offer was
lol a 7th at best
I said this all along, since we acquired Osweiler, that he was gonna surprise people.
He has the most experience, has won NFL games, and is more skilled than many give him credit for.
I’m really interested to see who survives between Kessler and Hogan.
Let’s see if you’re still touting him when he throws 3 interceptions in his first regular season game!
I’m pretty sure despite what Coach Hue is saying, they wanna showcase Brock so they can get a better offer for him. They really have no reason to accept a junk return
Kessler is a lock to make the team, he may even be starting week one.
After the Dolphins threw $10mil-$13mil at Cutler, I would imagine that the offer for Osweiler was maybe a 4th or 5th IF Cleveland was eating a portion of his remaining contract.
Cleveland is In a position where there are very few QBs available that have any starting experience and trading Brock would give Kessler no competition for the starting gig. I highly doubt Kizer starts early in the year.
I still think Kessler can run Hue’s offense. He showed at times last year that he could lead the team downfield and now that they have a vastly upgraded O-Line, he should have time to get the ball out and maybe have a running game to take pressure off him. Remember that last season he had two concussions and got pummeled behind some poor protection. I expect that he will improve a good amount over the next couple seasons unless Kizer or a future high drafted QB steals his job.
All reports from camp are that Kessler has regressed, while still holding the ball too long. Jamie Collins even baited him into throwing a pick-6.
A pure bum.
Stop talking about yourself that way.
honestly i’d rather him take the job right now. let kizer develop. kessler isn’t the future.
