Free agent quarterback Robert Griffin III has begun to attract “mild interest” from NFL clubs, according to Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report, who notes the operative word in that sentence is “mild.” A number of teams could be willing to give RG3 an opportunity during training camp, adds Freeman.
Griffin’s physical traits remain tantalizing, and clubs are surely still holding out hope that RG3 can come close to replicating the production he exhibited in 2012, when he arguably posted the second-best rookie quarterback campaign since the merger. Still only 27 years old, Griffin should also come rather cheaply, as he won’t come close to matching the $7.5MM annual salary he landed from the Browns last offseason.
But it’s also apparent why teams would be wary of Griffin (one executive said last month that he wouldn’t sign RG3 “under any circumstances”). Griffin simply can’t stay healthy, as injuries have limited him in every season during his NFL tenure. Last year, health concerns relegated RG3 to five starts, and he wasn’t effective during those contests, completing less than 60% of his passes and registering a 72.5 quarterback rating.
The Seahawks are the only club known to have expressed interest in Griffin this offseason, but Seattle ultimately chose Austin Davis over Griffin and a host of other signal-callers (including Colin Kaepernick). PFR recently ranked Griffin as the fourth-best free agent quarterback, behind Kaepernick, Christian Ponder, and Shaun Hill.
Why no team has signed Kaepernick is beyond me. He’d be a great fit in Carolina behind Cam who’s health is a question mark to start the 2017 season. Derek Anderson CANNOT run Carolina’s offense as i believe Colin could.
There must be a lot of things “beyond” you if you seriously wonder why Colin is still a free agent… You must still be seeking a reason for your left nut….
Peep Colin’s stats from last season. I GUARANTEE he’s better than your teams backup, and I’d say he’s better than about 5-10 starters in the league.
He’s sooo great, a possible SuperBowl winning QB just sitting there, ripe for the taking….n 32 teams who’s only goal is to win games n get to the SB don’t want anything to do w/em…..were talking the smartest football coaches, front office staff, talent evaluators, the best in the world…n yet ur boy remains unemployed…? They r ALL wrong….n u r right…? Time to take ur Kap jersey off….
I agree with the 18thbanner in the sense that Kaep being a fa is about things other than football performance. But I agree with lasam if he was that good he’d be in someone’s uniform. He would get a shot with someone if it wasn’t for his kneeling at the anthem but teams look at is a possible big backlash from fans and possible locker room issues and figure it’s just not worth it for Kaep. In San Fran he had some history. He had a couple good years and looked like the future of the franchise. He had some fans in San Fran. Fans he wouldn’t have going anywhere else. Front offices are scared of what that could do to them. All that for a backup qb you hope never has to take a snap. Not worth it to other teams obviously or he’d be starting training camp
He better learn to speak Canadian n he better stand for, “O’Canada…” He can tackle new causes up there as well….the social-economical plight of the Eskimo…..
The problem is Kaepernick wants starter money as a backup! He wants to start which is not going to happen! He can either take a pay cut and be a backup or stay out of the league! Plus his kneeling during the national anthem is also driving organizations away from signing him! I mean Blaine Gabbert beat him out for the starters job lol!
Themissing18th is right … all of Kap haters cringe. On the field he’s a great fit behind Cam, Russ. Wilson, and others. Unfortunately he does want more money than teams are willing to offer and he comes with the obvious baggage.
I can also see why teams would pass on RG3 and take a young QB who has not failed yet. Everybody loves the new guy until they don’t produce. If you’re a team that does not have that option and needs a 3rd string would could contribute from the sideline and play in a pinch, RG3 is your guy.
Matt Miller summed it up perfectly on Twitter a few months ago: Kaep isn’t still unsigned because of his outspoken beliefs; he’s unsigned because his talent isn’t good enough to outweigh the potential distraction of his outspoken beliefs. If he was still one of the better quarterbacks in the league, someone would sign him and deal with whatever potential distractions might occur. But no one wants to do that for someone who isn’t at that level anymore.
Look RG3 might be a bust and a career backup, but how I the world do y’all have him ranked behind Ponder what can’t sniff a starting lineup and Hill who is basically retired and only thing he can throw up is lame ducks???
Hard to rank guys that are as bad as those three. Maybe just above those guys idk but he sucks make no mistake about that. Rather pick a rookie qb out of a hat and say a prayer with those as my options
Kap sticks and brings too much baggage, it is pretty simple.
Kaep just isn’t a starter anymore. He was a really good player that never developed the touch and accuracy to make it long term. He didn’t suddenly get worse. The league just caught up to him. RG3 is another example. If u can’t make all the throws u won’t make it in the league long. There’s only so long the oc can hide ur deficiencies. They aren’t the only 2 ever to have a good 3-4 year stretch in Kaeps case and a good 1 year in RG3s. They can both b backups. But need to b willing to take a backup price tag
When I look at Griffin and Kaepernick I remember how good the defensive minds of the NFL are. Both QB’s had one amazing season early in their career and then their weaknesses were identified and they were not versatile enough to have success with secondary skills. Who knows how much Griffin’s playoff injury, and wearing the knee brace, took away from his game? Maybe he was on track to be a perennial top 10 QB. Maybe he never would have succeeded with a more intricate play book? We’ll never know. I will say this, Greg Hardy is STILL being looked at my NFL GM’s. I do
not believe that GM’s would shy away from Griffin or Kaepernick if they viewed them as difference makers.
Generating interest comments is usually a desperate agent trying to create some type of market besides NO MARKET
Toby312…..do you mean “fake news”? 😉
