Jets linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin turned himself into Manhattan authorities after being charged with misdemeanor assault stemming from an incident in a New York club in early April, according to a report from TMZ.
Jean Lopez accuses Mauldin of punching him after he spilled champagne on the Gang Green defender, reports Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. Lopez, who claims to have suffered several broken bones in his face, also filed a civil suit against Mauldin earlier this month. Both Mauldin and his lawyer have denied the charges, but Mauldin could face up to a year in prison if convicted.
Mauldin, a third-round pick in 2015, could be subject to a league-imposed suspension (even if he’s not found guilty of assault). The 24-year-old hasn’t registered much production thus far in his NFL career, as he’s managed only 6.5 sacks as a backup in two seasons. Mauldin is signed through the 2018 campaign with cap charges below $900K in each season.
I’ve seen plenty of guys like this come and go. Guys who think they’re somebody but they aren’t. So they act like a jerk off the field and think they’re untouchable. Next thing they know, they’re cut, no one wants them, and they end up working a “normal” job. The normal job is a problem. Because they think they’re above it. Then they end up in jail.
let’s wait to see if he did anything at all first
I think with things like assaulting women you should take it as a guilty until proven innocent thing. At least in the NFL because so many of these players assault women and why would you punish the women for speaking up about it or doubt them right off the bat
That is such an ignorant statement. There are numerous cases where the “victim” makes the story up for money or fame or attention. Now before you yell at me, this is the truth and we all know it. I’m not saying most case or half cases or anything, just saying that it does happen. EVERYONE should be given the chance to prove their case….having said that, the NFL has an issue due to many of the athletes coming from backgrounds where toughness was needed to survive, along with the fact that almost all players have to be aggressive and trained to hit due to their job, so all these thing mixed with the fact that many player come from nothing and end up with hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars suddenly and get an ego boost which when not trained and educated properly with these new Financial successes, the end result sometimes becomes violent. All of these combinations make all these cases a very hard thing for the law and NFL to handle. But making a statement like yours is ignorant at best.
