Bears head coach John Fox was unaware of his club’s intention to draft North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky until a “couple hours” before the draft, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com (Twitter link).
The effects of that news aren’t immediately clear, but it should indicate general manager Ryan Pace has complete control over personnel machinations in Chicago. Speculatively, the Bears could have been concerned about leaks, especially with other clubs — including the Browns — reportedly interested in trading up for Trubisky. In 2014, for example, Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell famously kept his plan to select quarterback Blake Bortles to himself for fear of the news affecting other teams’ strategy.
In the end, the Bears traded a haul of draft picks for the 49ers for the right to move up one spot. While one earlier report indicated Chicago was bidding against itself to acquire the No. 2 pick, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets San Francisco did have an additional “real and legitimate offer” for the second selection. Cleveland, Kansas City, Houston, and Arizona all reportedly had interest in moving up.
I hate being a fan of this team.
Me too. Thinking of stopping. Just so sick of there stupidity
Now you know how us Browns fans used to feel.
Used to feel? I would imagine Browns fans would still be suffering until they actually start winning games. Draftees are nothing until they produce.. look at Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell
I have way more confidence in the current FO than in any previous ones. At least this one has a plan in place, and seems to be sticking to it.
Now, just give it time to develop.
Your front office doesn’t play on the field. And until the players they draft start producing you have nothing but a 1-15 team
That’s why I said to give it time. This is only their second draft. It usually takes around 3 years to grade a draft class.
As a Cub fan trust the process. Enjoy other fans bashing your team. When you finally win it all it makes it that much sweeter. Of course they all hide but still sweet.
Yep, being a Bears fan is tough. This once proud and respected franchise has diminished to something short of pathetic under the McCaskey family.
You have are be an idiot to root for the bears. They’ve sucked since 1986
No, they have not sucked “since 1986.”
Or your name could just be caryloyd…..
My takeaway, Pace doesn’t trust Fox to keep quiet. I’ve met Fox a few times, when in a room of his peers, he talks A LOT. I wonder if Pace has tired of Fox… I have
Cade McNown, Gabe Carimi, Shea McClellan, Kyle Fuller, Kevin White, Chris Williams, jay cutler, jay cutler, Cedric Benson, Rex grossman, Michael Haynes… Mitch Trubisky?
Why can’t I ever watch a Bears draft and leave thinking, wow that was a smart move? Every year I’m scratching me head.
It’s because the Bears always play it “safe” instead of playing it smart.
I admire the move… pretty, atypical of the Bears. Considering the Bears’ history with QBs and Tribisky not being a “day-1” starter, he gave up too much.
last years draft is turning out pretty good
Meant to say “pretty bold”.
Last season for the head coach or the GM. Not on the same page
Last season for both. 3-13.
I think drafting Trubisky bought Pace another year or two because he’s now tied to that draft pick which I think is the real reason he took him. Like “look I finally got us our franchise QB, you’ve just gotta wait to see what he can do”. Fox is a dead man walking though and the fact he wasn’t involved in this decision makes that even clearer.
I disagree. Fox/Pace get the boot if the Bears don’t win at least 6 or 7 games. Hint: they won’t.
Pace gets another year if Trubisky or Glennon can play. Either Trubisky is good or he’s a long term project. Pace tied himself to him either way.
Fox is definitely gone but with the drafting of Trubisky I’d bet anything Pace gets at least another year regardless of how they do. You know the McCaskeys don’t care about winning, so all Pace had to do is give them a glimmer of hope with a QB and scapegoat Fox for everything else. Not only will Pace stay but he’ll also hire the next head coach.
That wouldn’t make much sense. Part of the Bears’ problem is personnel, which Pace is responsible. If Glennon is a flop and the FA signings don’t payoff, Pace is a goner.
