Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has opened up the lines of communication for a Tony Romo deal to go down. So far, that has not spurred any action. The Broncos and Texans still will not trade for Romo, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.
Instead, it seems that both teams will wait to see if Romo is released by Dallas. From there, they can freely negotiate with Romo (if they choose) without sacrificing draft compensation. They should also be able to sign him at a cheaper rate that his current contract calls for.
Romo does not want to play out the season as Dak Prescott‘s backup it seems unlikely that Jones would force him to stay. That doesn’t leave the Cowboys with an awful lot of options. At this point, it’s the smart play for Denver and Houston to bide their time and see what happens. Even if Romo reaches the open market, the Broncos might not be willing to go all out for him given that they have two quality QBs already under contract.
Would anybody want to trade for Tony Romo?!?! Stop cowboys have Prescott start as a starter QB!!! I do believe Romo has potential. But not as much as the cowboys think… the same injury 2 seasons in a row.
China doll
I’m just waiting for them to restructure some contracts and maybe sign a free agent. Whatever happens with Romo, at the end of the day – he’d be the best insurance policy they’d have in case Dak goes down or he lays an egg in year 2.
Exactly, sophomore slump. Caught league by surprise, now DC’s have had year too game plan for him. No way Dak repeats same success. Interception city.
They need to get that contract off the books this season though so we have cap space next year
If he’s just kept 1 more year its a 24.7 Cap Hit, whether he is cut today or next year the dead money is the same. Makes a lot more sense to cut him lose in 2018 though. Seriously don’t know why they haven’t converted Dez, Smith and Crawford’s salary into a bonus to get cap space this year though. FA is basically over and they didn’t make a move.
2017 Dead Money: $19,600,0000
2017 Cap Savings if Cut: $5,100,000
2018 Dead Money: $8,900,000
2018 Cap Savings if Cut: $16,300,000
2019 Dead Money: $3,200,000
2019 Cap Savings if Cut: $20,500,000
Seems like the Cowboys are really grasping at straws here. No one wants to take on that monster contract and give up a draft pick. The Cowboys have painted themselves into a corner here. It seems the “Do Right by Romo” was complete hogwash…. but that is typical Jerry. Release the man and let him get what he can get. It’s just that simple. You won’t take the $24.7 million cap hit unless you continue to hold out hope for a miracle trade. Your move Jerry….
If Romo wants something done, he should honestly go public about it. However, that probably won’t happen, so the cowboys should just release the man. They have to know no one will trade for him, they have no leverage. No sense in keeping somebody who doesn’t want to be there.
Jerry Jones is really coming off as an ass in this whole thing. Over the years, Romo has done right by the Cowboys, now they need to do right by him!
It’s a business. Both have done their parts. Romo did his part and Jones paid him well to do it.
And Jerry Jones once again shows fans why players have no loyalty. Team owners treat their employees like slaves, we’ll paid, but slaves non the less. People want to cry when players leave town for more money, but look at how teams treat the players. Not sure how anyone in America could even be a Cowboys fan. Jerry should just move to mexico city, his team is already the mexican national team.
Wow, you compared the horror that slavery is too being a professional athlete…and then you cast aspersions upon our friends too the south…you don’t have many friends do you Alexander..? Your mom doesn’t count! Sorry lil man.
AlexanderMaunu aka Donald Trump
I don’t see players crying while they continue to cash checks from the owners are paying them. Romo got paid for the last 32 games and played in what…. 4?
Ah yes the poor slave getting paid $30 million to play a game
Or in Romo’s case not play the game
If the cowboys release him post June 1 the can spread the $20MM dead money cap hit over two seasons. Hold him has NOTHING to do with Jerry Jones being anything but intelligent. Not a cowboys fan btw just someone who understands the business.
correctomundo
The don’t actually have to hold on to him till June 1st to cut him. They could have designated him a June 1st cut at anytime once free agency started. So no, you don’t understand the business.
He can be designated as a post June 1st cut now, it just allows him to negotiate earlier.
Tony Romo has already received a big bonus for what he has been paid compared with his contribution the last two years. What else is owed? The Texans and Broncos are pretty smart to me!
Jerry Jones obviously has a hard-on for Romo, why wait to release him? He’s hoping he’ll just retire, which I don’t see happening. Jones doesn’t want him playing in Texas other than for the cowboys
Interesting how you take keywords, take then out of context and then call names based on your false assertations. My comment stands. Romo wants to play, the owner says he wants to work with romo to find him a new home, instead the owner disregards the player entirely, and does something he said he wouldn’t do. Meanwhile, romo never really had any options. Sure, he signed for a ton of money, but he has absolutely no say in what happens. If he doesn’t want to play for the Cowboys he can’t play for any other team unless the team owner allows it. There is no escape from the contract except for the team. The players don’t get an option, the teams hold the cards and decide on contract structure. This is a form of slavery. I’m sorry you’re too stupid to comprehend the difference, and I’m sorry your brain is so fried you can’t even contemplate history without name calling.
As for the fool who called me Donald trump, was that supposed to be an insult? Donald trump is more successful than any democrat ever. I know Democrats like to pretend anyone with money is evil and hates poor people, but wealth is a measure of success, and the fact that trump has failed in some endeavours yet comes out ahead in the long run is the exact kind of thing we need in government. He’s not a politician, he’s not really a Republican, and he’s doing a fantastic job. The only people who are living in fear and hate is Democrats who can’t comprehend why they lost, and people who are so stupid they actually think the propaganda being spewed by media companies is realistic in any way. So yes, please keep posting lame insults without defending your postition.
Also, posting anyone’s information (name, address, etc) when the poster doesn’t want it exposed is illegal. You’re lucky in not a petty democrat because otherwise I would see you in court. Now, try getting back to football.
Political correctness is another name for liberal censorship.
Oh yeah, about 12% of slaves in America were black, 30% Asian (chinese) and the rest Irish (white). So maybe finish you’re intro to history class before you publish anything, gomer.
Lil man? You do realize that people who go on the Internet and bring up age or “mommy” are immediately put in one catagory: teenager who lives with mom and dad and has no power, no control, no use and are generally a waste of oxygen. Call me whatever names you want, it doesn’t change reality, and it doesn’t convince anyone of your opinion. Welcome to the real world, some of us have been using the Internet since before Microsoft Windows existed. For some reason I don’t see people like you figuring out mdos.
Now I know you don’t have any friends…not even your mom. Get a life…
When one signs a contract – in this case a standard NFL players contract prepared and reviewed by highly trained attorneys representing both players and owners – that clearly delineates the obligations of both parties, the word “slavery” is not applicable and is in fact, nonsense!
Mr. Romeo knowingly ceded certain “rights” to employment to the Dallas Cowboys for the length the contract is in force in exchange for financial compensation to him from the Dallas Cowboys. Contractual arrangements between parties are foundation for virtually every enterprise in the United States.
Slavery is an evil institution forced on Africans who unlike Mr. Romo, had no contractual rights or compensation. And, it was men, women, and children of African descent who were forced into slavery, not Irish!
was there anything of value in this article? I mean cmon….why bother? Jerrah and his worthless progeny who’ve never had real jobs (Ala Spaulding from caddyshack) are just looking out for themselves here….Maybe a write up on the murder of Jon Benet Ramsey and mom and dads search for the real killer would be more enlightening….
Wow, so spending my break at work responding to you mean I have no friends? Do you even know what work is?
You actually made me log on here because of your incredibly skewed statistics that you’re trying to use to prove you’re not racist or ignorant. So I’m going to skip over your general ranting and raving. 1. 12% of the slave population was black but what you leave out is that that accounts for 95+% of the black population in America. 2. I don’t remember any Irish being kidnapped and forced into the underbelly of a boat and shipped across an ocean and told to work or die? I do remember a white population freely entering indentured servitude in order to one day buy land. Something that 9/10 times wasn’t afforded to a black slave 3. It’s not liberal censorship it’s called stopping historical inaccuracies being used to push uneducated opinions in a public forum. Like what we see here, with your misinformed historical assessment of slavery and skewed statistical data that followed.
Now don’t reply as I’ve now logged off and moved on. If you do reply realize you’re talking to yourself now and that no amount of trolling will get me to reply.
