With the 48th pick in the draft, the Bengals have selected Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon.
Players with character concerns are nothing new for the Bengals, and Mixon is perhaps the draft’s most controversial prospect in light of the video that surfaced of him assaulting a female three years ago. A number of teams reportedly removed Mixon from their respective draft boards, as they were unwilling to deal with the backlash of selecting such a infamous player. Mixon and the victim in the case reached a civil settlement earlier this month.
While Mixon has off-field concerns, he’s one of the best running back prospects on the field, and many observers felt Mixon would have been a surefire first-round pick if he came without baggage. In 2016, put 1,274 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground for the Sooners, adding another 538 yards and five scores in the passing game.
The Bengals already have two familiar backs in Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard, though neither reached the 4.0 yards-per-carry mark last season. Plus, Hill will be a free agent next offseason and Bernard is coming off a serious injury, having torn his ACL in November.
I wonder how many of those on social media saying that he never deserves to play again have ever made a mistake. Everyone out there now is completely infallible, what he did was egregious, but that doesnt mean he should never be allowed to work again. Hes apparently a career criminal to some because he punched a woman 3 years ago, i would be willing to bet some of these same idiots have driven drunk or impaired before, which is worse in my opinion because you are legitimately risking everyones life who is on the road with you.
For those of you who think this guy doesnt deserve a second chance at all because he struck a woman three years ago, next time you look up from your phone while driving, think of the damage you could do to someones life in those few seconds.
While I don’t take issue with him being drafted/playing in the NFL, knocking out a girl is NOT a “mistake.” Have you seen the video? It’s absolutely disgusting.
He also broke four bones in the lady face! I’m shocked that the Bengals drafted him!
For a team that say they do not like trouble makers, they sure go out of there way to draft and sign them! I bet Mike Brown father, Paul Brown, would have not tolerated this kind of action!
Don’t like or trouble makers? While they’re all over the NFL, the Bengals have led the way.
Yes what he did was mistake, it was an overreaction by an 18 year old whose first instinct is violence because he plays a violent sport.
Definitions of
mistake
1
n a wrong action attributable to bad judgment or ignorance or inattention
Smashed a girls face in literally, after making some homophobic comments. Regardless of the act some may excuse, it speaks to his character of what you’re dealing with.
When someone spits in your face it’s like a bull seeing red. Just saying. Usually doesn’t end well. Ray Rice then fiance spit in his face then went night night. Same thing happened to that dumb girl that thought spouting off racial slurs was a good idea. So if you reaaaaally want to piss someone off next time use your spit.
It’s the video that I thought would keep Mixon out of the NFL when I saw it last year. Without a video Nicolas Cage, Johnny Depp, Chris Brown, Christian Slater, Charlie Sheen, Mickey Rourke, Dr. Dre, Ozzy Osborne, Tommy Lee, Steven Segal, Josh Brolin and Tito Ortiz continued to get work and have varied fan bases.
