The Raiders are planning to spend the 2017 and 2018 campaigns is Oakland before officially relocating to Las Vegas, but the club may have another option up its sleeve. Depending on how the 2017 season plays out, San Antonio could be used as a potential temporary location for the Raiders, according to Vincent Bonsignore of the Los Angeles Daily News (Twitter link).
San Antonio has been mentioned as a possible landing spot for the Raiders since 2014, and while the club won’t be moving there permanently, the city could still act as something of a pit stop while the Raiders get their affairs in order. Unlike the Rams or Chargers, who voted to move to Los Angeles and did so before playing more games in St. Louis or San Diego, respectively, the Raiders plan to stay in Oakland two more years.
That decision will undoubtedly have repercussions, with chief among them being the response of Raiders fans in Oakland. It’s unclear exactly how fans of the team will respond to watching the Raiders over the next two seasons knowing full well the club’s Oakland lifespan is limited, but it’s likely going to be positive. Moving to San Antonio would lessen the burden on the organization in the short term.
A temporary stay in San Antonio wouldn’t come without its complications, however. Both the Texans and Cowboys might chafe at the notion of adding a third club in the state of Texas. Jerry Jones, specifically, was a driving force behind the Raiders’ relocation to Las Vegas, so Raiders owner Mark Davis may not want to anger Jones by planning a move to Jones’ home turf.
Who gives a crap if he angers jones. Jones is nothing but a selfish prick. He’s responsible for holding on to romo so he won’t go to the Texans
??? Texans need to make an offer if they want him.
If I was Davis I would try to get out of oakland asap, especially with how the local politicians are trying to fool everyone and keep their jobs. Look how they strung him along with terrible stadium plans and then tried to blame him. The city will turn as many people against the team as they can. That said, the raiders are finally a super bowl caliber team, and if they could win a superbowl on their way out of town, those fans are going to stay fans. Winning cures all. Heck look at the warriors. Oakland knew they were leaving for years and people still sell out every game. Winning cures all
Sorry our city didn’t want to handout hundreds of millions of our tax dollars to a private for profit corporation owned by a billionaire.
Sorry our rising city and economy decided we have a few priorities first. I say this as a hardline Bay Area sports fan.
“Rising” Well I guess when you’re at the bottom the only place to go is up.
Holy frick i can see it now, seeing as almost all Oakland fans are bandwagons ie Warriors fans i could see all the “Raiders” fans rooting against their former team its gonna be great to see if the Raiders play an actual home game with cheering fans or if other teams will be rooted for every week
You obviously don’t know what you are talking about…it was a nice try though, I guess
Y’all don’t know raider fans they don’t care what city they move to, they gonna stay loyal.
I think San Antonio is ideal. It might temper Jerry Jones and his cock-swing feeling like he owns the NFL, but not to a point where he feels his brand is in jeopardy. Those poor San Antonians have been saddled with the tax implications of the Alamodome for years, and if they show a strong turnout for the Raiders, even if they are but temporary, then San Antonio could establish itself as a legitimate NFL city despite the selfish interests of the Dallas Cowboys. Texas has a lot of people, like California and Florida, and one man’s economic interests cannot trump a potentially good match for NFL economics.
I paid my $100 PSL deposit for the Las Vegas Raiders btw…. I’m gonna commute.
Here’s a shout out for the LA Times columnist who said the most popular team in LA will be playing in Las Vegas.
