The Rams are in discussions with several teams about potentially trading franchised cornerback Trumaine Johnson, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter).
Johnson was tagged for the second year in a row, giving him a one-year, $16.742MM tender. The Rams and the 27-year-old corner have until July 15 to agree to an extension, but it sounds like he could be shipped out before that point.
If the Rams do trade Johnson, it’s likely that they will pursue some of this year’s top available cornerbacks. Last year, the Rams let Janoris Jenkins leave via free agency and their pass defense suffered tremendously. Some of this year’s biggest available names include A.J. Bouye, Logan Ryan, Stephon Gilmore, Morris Claiborne, and Dre Kirkpatrick. We also consider Prince Amukamara, Brandon Carr, Terence Newman, Nickell Robey-Coleman (recently released), and Kayvon Webster to be among the ten best CBs on the market.
The Rams’ other cornerbacks under contract are Lamarcus Joyner, E.J. Gaines, Blake Countess, Troy Hill, and Michael Jordan (no, not that Michael Jordan).
In 2016, Johnson had 57 total tackles and one interception in 14 games. In the year prior, he racked up 71 total tackles and seven interceptions. Johnson’ position as Pro Football Focus’ No. 26 cornerback last season is nothing to sneeze at, but he probably didn’t perform quite at the level expected of him.
Who would trade for him? Why pay him the crazy salary for the year 2017 and also and give draft choices for him too. Just draft your own players and save money.
I was thinking the same thing. He was a good CB so I wonder if the price tag of the Franchise was high and when they negotiated for him he probably wanted more money than they could give him.
Who said anything about draft choices? Paying him that much should cost a team getting him virtually nothing if they have to pay his contract
The rams aren’t going to get better with bonehead moves like this. In s draft that is supposedly ripe in backfield talent and a team that is clearly rebuilding and has so many needs, why would you tag him for anything over $8m…..much less…..$17m? Why not spend the money on O-Line orand. See what you have at QB. Or TE….or any number of needs rather than blow itt a n a guy who is going to walk next year anyway. Or at least work on a long term deal with him if they like him that much. They could get 2 CB in free agency and another in the draft for that kind of money! Ridiculous!
This is insane. I’m smelling a Josh norman? They’re testing to see if anybody will take. If nobody does they will most likely cut him. That franchise tag is wayyy to rich for this guy. Good luck! If the Raiders could pick him up for cheap he could be a solid nickel lol
They can’t pull a Josh Norman. Panthers were able to pull the tag with no ill effect because Norman never signed the tag.
Johnson signed the tag right away meaning he’s already guaranteed the money. If Rams cut Johnson they willbe on the hook for the value of the tag.
They were probably hoping that he did what Norman did but once he signed it right away the Rams knew that they were screwed. To get anything of value for him they either need to package him with (good)picks or be willing to pay half his salary
They are already regretting tagging him
This is what happens when you have a 30-year-old as HC and a bad front office. No one realized before tagging him that he doesn’t fit Wade’s scheme?
A team that may make sense are the Jets because Dennard Wilson, who was the DB coach for the Rams, is no w with the Jets and they need the help. Maybe Richardson, to bring some youth to that DL.
Pretty sure any trade would be done, with long term in place or agreed to. Not a concern for viability of trade.
Panthers should try to trade for him, but try not to give up a crazy amount of assets
Not going to happen. If they wouldn’t pay Norman who is vastly superior at everything, they’re not trading for a guy who will be demanding in the same ballpark money wise. Also, Gettleman comes from the Giants where the secondary just isn’t valued the same as the front 7, particularly the defenssive line. See how he quickly got all of those guys taken care of even before FA started this year despite having almost the whole line to re-sign.
Any team would be insane to pick this guy up for 16.7 million. For that Price, the Rams should’ve paid a decent quarterback 16.7 million.. I dont think any corner in the NFL is worth 16.7 million a season.
This has Mike Tannenbaum attention,This is his type of move.
I meant to add,As a Dolphins fan,I’d rather build through the draft, not trade a bunch of picks away
Really confused as to how in a passing league, a team would want to give up on a top corner. Yeah his numbers weren’t as good this year, but that had to be expected when you lose another top 10 corner on the other side. Didn’t the Panthers show last year that these guys aren’t easily replaced?
I don’t think a $17m tag is “giving up”. If anything, it shows they want him around. They could have tendered him and gotten a draft pick if he walked like the Patriots did with Butler. It’s a win-win for everyone and shows respect for the player. Course, there’s clearly no hoodie in LaLa Land!

If you were truly Rams fans and actually watched him play extensively you’d know he is one of the top comerbacks in all of football.I loved Jenkins but Trumaine was simply better in every way.Ya,Jenkins may return a pick for a td.He will also let one go over his head on a total fail cover in every game.Trumaine is reliable, never backs down from covering the best guy on the other side of the ball and he shuts them down.He doesn’t get all crazy looking for attention for doing his job,he just goes out there and gets it done every week.In my opinion he is truly the top man coverage corner in the game right now.
