In what would be a stunning turn of events, a scenario in which the 49ers acquire quarterback Kirk Cousins from the Redskins could lead to Washington landing fellow signal-caller Tony Romo from the Cowboys, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. It would be a three-team trade that would see the Redskins send draft pick compensation to the NFC East rival Cowboys for Romo (Twitter links).
While Romo’s a longtime star and a four-time Pro Bowler, the more significant passer changing hands in this deal would be Cousins. The Redskins placed the $23.94MM exclusive franchise tag on Cousins to prevent him from negotiating with other teams, but the two sides haven’t yet come close to a long-term agreement. That might lead Washington to shop Cousins, whom it could lose in free agency next year, though the 49ers reportedly aren’t willing to both surrender a haul of draft picks and sign him to a mega-deal. The Niners own the second pick in this year’s draft and are are set to select two more times in the top 70 (Nos. 34 and 66).
For his part, the 28-year-old Cousins would welcome a trade to the 49ers, which would allow him to reunite with Kyle Shanahan. The rookie head coach has long been a Cousins fan and coached him as Washington’s offensive coordinator from 2012-13. While Cousins was a backup during that two-year span, he emerged as a high-end starter last season and is coming off a campaign in which he completed 67 percent of passes, nearly reached the 5,000-yard mark (4,917), and tossed 25 touchdowns against 12 interceptions.
Unlike Cousins, Romo has barely seen the field the past two seasons. Shoulder injuries limited the soon-to-be 37-year-old to four games in 2015, when he struggled with five TDs against seven picks, and he suffered a broken bone in his back last August and ended up attempting just four passes on the season. Romo returned in November, but wunderkind rookie Dak Prescott had usurped the starting role for good by then.
With Prescott entrenched under center, Romo will likely be on his way out of Dallas soon. If it’s via trade, he’ll still be due base salaries of $14MM, $19.5MM, $20.5MM in each of the next three seasons, but none of that money is guaranteed. As CBS Sports’ Joel Corry reported last month, any team acquiring Romo would have to take on his salary for 2017 before reworking his contract. The Cowboys, though, would likely allow that club to have contract-related discussions with Romo’s camp before the trade.
if the 49ers got cousins. all they would need now is a solid back up RB because of hyde health and some good WR and the offense could be much improve
Well, a solid back up RB plus 11 players that can play defense.
Maybe the new DC and if the offense can stay on the field longer will help.
Not 11. More like 6-7.
And a OL that can block! Hyde got all if his yards on his own, and Kap couldn’t step into many throws. The OL has been the main problem for the past three years, and everybody is talking about everything else. Lynch is a football guy, so I know he saw film on how bad they are. Expect the 49ers to address the OL thru the draft and free agency. FINALLY
No Señor, more than that. The Niners OL need a decent OG and an OT to protect Mr. Cousins, Sí? BTW add a couple of decent WRs. A decent TE will NOT hurt, either.
I don’t really see what’s in it for WAS, especially if they’re giving up a pick. No guarantee on Romo’s health
Is this just about no having to pay Cousins?
If they may this trade I’m done. What are the skins going to do with an often injured QB?
Draft someone with the draft pick compensation they get back for Cousins?
Please don’t trade for cousins. Please no, please no. He’s not worth the money we would have to pay him and the haul we would have to give up to get him.
why not the 49ers have between 70-90 mill in cap. i think the 49ers want to win now more than later. there no sure fire rookie QB in the draft, getting the pats QB is a risk plus might coast alot. then there really nothing out there in free agency. so else you want them to do?
I’m not a believer in cousins. I don’t believe he can lead any team to the super bowl. He’s just an average qb to me
Can you blame him the team around him might not be that good. Plus if he avg then why did he almost have 5,000 yards and have 25 TD to 12 int. He more than just avg
I like cousins but I wouldn’t give up the 2nd overall pick. I would use that pick on a stud defensive player, spend some of that dough on the defense since we have 3-4 front and shanahans going to 4-3 then sign cousins next year. Oh yeah sign alshon Jeffrey.
Cousins is in the top half of the leagues QBs. Better then what u will get out of Watson, Kizer, or Trubisky this year, or next. I’d get cousins and c where Webb falls. Maybe 3rd-4th and get him to groom
I like Webb also. He played well at the senior bowl, somewhat impressive. IMHO Trubisky is grossly overrated. In the bowl against Stanford he looked like a deer in the headlights. Imagine how he’ll react against a tough NFL defense. A lot of critics said he should have stayed in college another year.
With CK7 officially opting-out to FA the Niners cap is very close to $100M. Money is NOT the problem. Lynch NOR Shanahan wants to give more than one pick. That’s why a possible WA, big D & SF three way deal involving Dallas/Romo might work. That ingenuity it’s hardly an understatement.
What am I missing with Cousins? Does Snyder not remember Jason Campbell, Rex Grossman, etc.? They haven’t had a real QB since I’ve been alive, they should be sprinting him a check for whatever he asks for.
Ian Rapoport is fake news. As a Cowboys fan, there’s almost no way this happens.
A the 17th pick for romo? As a cowboys fan of course you do this. That’s 2 first rounders in a defensive draft. And with the success the cowboys have in drafts it’s a no brainer.
The skins would never give #17 for Romo!! It would most likely be a 3rd or 4th rounder..being franchise exclusive.. Someone has to give up two first rounders..So basically the skins get #2 #17 this year, 49ers first round next year if it’s them, they give up there 3rd, for Romo.. I’m a die-hard skins fan, so thinking about Romo in DC makes me sick..but cousins has gotten cocky, let him go! He won’t forget fast enough the weapons in DC that made his short career so good, none of that in San Fran! Name a receiver worth a dime in 9er land???!! Exactly!
I Agree Cousins hasn’t won the games he should have won.It has been said he is a stats maker and nothing else.As much as I hate Dallas I think Tony Romo could take us farther than Cousins. Our offensive line held Cousins to 11 sacks so I think we could do a good job of protecting Romo
I don’t even see how this trade happens. If Romo is getting traded, why would Jerry send him to the Redskins? Makes no sense. Unless the draft picks they’d be getting from SF are too good to pass up, but I doubt that.
He’s gonna get cut regardless, so why not get a 3rd rounder out of him! Theyd be crazy not to..if the cut him…they get nothing!
A fourth rounder it’s more realistic and feasible/doable.
You’re right it may not happen. You wonder why the trade helps WA? Washington get a draft pick from the Niners instead of nothing if KC walks-out in 2019. Secondly if they get Romo they get a decent QB at an affordable price without breaking the bank. Keep in mind their cap is NOT all that big. The same goes for big D. They get a draft pick plus cap money they desperately need.
¡Uno, dos, trés>>cha, cha, cha!
Because Dallas would essentially get Myles Garret for Romo. Are you kidding? They do that in a heartbeat.
There is no way you give up A first round pick for Romo. That’s insane!!! They would be stupid for that…..4th or 5th round…maybe….
They’d get a starting qb without having to start over and won’t be a real long contract. And they get to keep their first + other picks. Win win
WHERE does it say that Dallas want a first round pick for Tony Romo?
The question still remains….what are the 49ers giving up in the deal. If they get Cousins without surrendering the #2 pick…..what a friggin’ coop that is for them and shame on Washington for giving him up and there pick at #17 to boot and then getting Romo. Don’t you think that the pick at #34 would be added in??????
They’re not giving up #17 for Romo. Maybe a 6th or 7th rounder but that’s it. Any Cowboy fan thinking they’re getting a boat load of draft picks for Romo is delusional. 49’ers would have to send first or second to Skins at least.
WA wants more than the first rounder>that’s the problem. That’s the idea of a 3Way deal so everybody is happy.
Let me say that nobody knows how serious is this 3 way deal rumor.Let’s start with WAS. They are better off trading KC to SF for their 2017 #2 1st. rnd. pick. KC wants out of WAS. Such a high draft pick is better than nothing when KC walks-out in 2018. A third franchise tag will cost WAS $35M meaning KC has a lot of leverage from that point of view(POV). SF from that same POV also has leverage. It means SF says to WAS take it or leave it. They can wait for KC a year since they do not have anything to lose and a lot gain if the deal is done.
Regarding big D it’s more complicated because D/Jones wants whomever deals for TR to take the 2017 contract before negotiations take place. Again from that POV and with so much money involved D Mr. JJ does NOT have any leverage to ask for a high pick. IMHO a 4th rnd. pick at best.
If the deal is done like I have explained Dallas and WAS will have some cap space which both desperately need.
This makes no sense for the Redskins. Does it say what the 49’ers are giving up?? They get Cousins for nothing. Fake news.
The Niners will have to come up off of two first round picks since the skins tagged cousins exclusively… He can’t negotiate with teams, but teams can negotiate with the skins. So San Fran will have to give the skins the #2 overall in the 2017 draft, and there first rounder next year, which is more than likely gonna be at the minimum a top 10 pick, cousins won’t make too big of a difference in one year out west, they have zer receivers, with Torrey Smith being the best, and talking about hitting free agency himself..I think he stays if cousins comes to town. Then the skins would most likely have to give up a 3rd round pick to Dallas if they choose to trade instead of cutting him.
Matt Lonas:
SF GM Lynch has already said that they will NOT give-up more than one pick for KC. The only fact you got correct is the exclusive tag. That does NOT mean that WAS can not waive it. KC has leverage, WHY? Because WAS is NOT going to franchise tag KC for the third time in 2018 while paying $35M>> KC walks and WAS gets NADA.
SF will have around $105M cap space after they cut two more veterans. That kind of dinero will get you mucho.
Matt Lonas:
Your first sentence is correct as long as KC sings that tender contract. KC has NOT. That means negotiations will continue. Furthermore the 49ers are NOT going to give-up more than one 1st. round pick, not 1 and 2, not 1 and 3. It means UNO>ONE>IT.
BTW their pick, not “there pick.”
WAS will pay KC $24M in 2017. IN 2018 the QB FC tag balloons to $35M which WAS can NOT afford. KC walks-out and FREE to sign with anyone. The other itch is that WAS gets NADA, zero compensation. NADA means nothing for you English speakers purists! Yeah baby!
With ALL due respect are you that naive?
Mt understanding is that the Niners will only give-up their #2 first rounder.
My understanding…
Please. There’s a better chance on finding Bigfoot than any of this ‘three way trade’ none sense happening. While it makes many in the national sports media happy to bad-mouth the Skins, and while it is certainly in vogue to bash the owner, there is zero evidence the Skins are mishandling their business/team. The organization wants KC long-term, but not if it costs them their future. The team would love to have D-Jax and PG back, but it will be cost prohibitive. The organization took a calculated bet on hiring Scot M, and it had the audacity to give him a second chance. If he proves unworthy, why are the Skins vilified for offering an imperfect man a chance to redeem himself? Trade?! You heard it here first: Romo will never play for the Burgundy and Gold.
100% agree here!!!
It would work for everyone if they all exchanged 1st round draft picks. Washington will receive #2 overall pick and get Romo, 49ers get Cousins and #28 overall pick, Dallas moves up to #17 overall pick. They all stay in the 1st round and all benifit from it this way.
WA is NOT going to give-up their #28th, period. With ALL due respect you are too presumptuous and greedy. Needless to say your proposed deal will NOT even gets looked-at.
That’s pretty stupid giving up any number 1 for someone that will be released anyway… what are you smoking? Lol
Where does it say or implied that Dallas want a first rounder for Romo?
No. Dallas get #2 overall.
Please explain WHY the 49ers will get the 28th pick from WAS? How do you justify Dallas getting a #1 pick? Romo is worth at best a 4th rounder. Don’t forget Romo’s contract has to reworked so Dallas is not in any way liable. BTW Mr. Jerry Jones said this three way deal “has no legitimacy.”
Thanks
It really sounds like irresponsible reporting to me. No one in there right mind pays for Romo when he will be released anyway.. stir the pot bozos
The Cowboys are going to cut romo because you can’t pay a backup qb that type of money … So a first rounder… Please rappaport is on the crack pipe again … Romo will be a free agent .. The redskins would not trade the best commodity to get the worst commodity out of this scenario … I smell
Fake news hits sports news too??…. click bait!!!! Really sad what journalism had morphed into.
lol this would be so stupid for the Redskins
EXPLAIN, WHY?
