There are a lot of moving pieces in this year’s quarterback market, and the Patriots’ Jimmy Garoppolo, despite recent reports suggesting he would not be traded, remains the forefront of the discussion. Per Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, New England is willing to deal Garoppolo, but the team has not yet received an offer approaching its asking price for Tom Brady‘s top backup. Howe writes that the current asking price is believed to be a first- and second-round draft pick, but the Patriots will not simply flip Garoppolo to the highest bidder. If the team is not “properly compensated,” they will not make a deal.
Meanwhile, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports writes that the Bills are not expected to retain Tyrod Taylor under his current contract (we heard several days ago that Buffalo was leaning against keeping Taylor, though there is a split among the club’s top decision-makers in that regard). Assuming Taylor does hit the open market, La Canfora expects the Browns to emerge as the front-runner for his services. Indeed, Taylor has strong ties to some members of the Browns staff already, and if Cleveland is able to acquire him, the club could use its two first-round selections on the best player available and would not have to reach for a quarterback or deal one (or both) picks for Garoppolo.
La Canfora also reports that the Bears have the strongest interest in Mike Glennon at the moment, and sources around the league believe Chicago will push hard to acquire him. The Bears also love Garoppolo, but they do not want to meet the Patriots’ asking price (all of that is consistent with reports that our Sam Robinson passed along last night). La Canfora projects Glennon, who turned down an $8MM/year offer from Tampa Bay, to receive an incentive-laden contract with an AAV of around $12MM.
Interestingly, Glennon has no official agent at this point, as Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk writes. That’s significant because when the “legal tampering” period opens on Tuesday, teams can negotiate with agents representing free agents, but not with the free agents directly. Jason Cole of Bleacher Report tweets that teams with interest in Glennon are working under the assumption that David Dunn is his agent.
Cue the asking price price on Jimmy is ridiculous comments… The Pats don’t actually want to trade him. They want to tag him and then start him after the next 2 years.
They might want to keep him, but not at the franchise tag value! There’s no way BB will tie up that much cap space with two QB’s, let alone a back up QB. I like JG(big Pats fan in general) but he’ll never sniff the field as long as #12 keeps playing at a high level. He’s under contract for one more season. They’ll either work a deal that suits both sides or they’ll trade him. If they can get a kings ransom for the guy, they be foolish not to take the deal. Maybe they let him go in FA and take the comp pick. No one knows what NE/BB is going to do……ever. Haha!
I could see Jimmy taking a 2/25 bridge extension and then starting in NE on a name your price deal. Within reason of course.
BB is so unpredictable and his moves ALWAYS work out. Ochocinco was a terrific trade. Adalius Thomas was a beast in NE. There are countless others that were genius such as Joey Galloway, Robert Gallery, Joseph Addai, Monty Beisel, Deltha O’Neil, Leigh Bodden, Tim Tebow, just to name a few. All of those moves worked out so well and prove his genius is in personnel and not just cheating.
You forgot Randy Moss
No he didn’t. For some reason he’s naming all the moves that didn’t work out. All I said was BB is unpredictable. I never said he doesn’t make mistakes, but haters are going to hate.
Randy Moss was a home run! 4th round pick for a HOF WR.
Anyone know why the Bears aren’t looking at or being suggested with Tyrod Taylor?
Because he is horrible.
Tyrod isn’t a bad QB. He’s not elite, but not bad. It’s most likely he doesn’t fit in their system because he’s more of a threat as a runner and not a thrower.
“Isn’t bad” is not the way you want to explain anything!
“My dinner isn’t bad” = just better than McDonald’s
“This car isn’t bad” = just better than a Kia
“This QB isn’t bad” – just better than Tim Tenow
Of course I meant Tebow, but the statement would work for many others (see “Charle Whitehurst”)
Tylerall, that’s what everyone says about athletic black QBs.
Considering the state of the Bears’ O-line, having a QB with escapability and pocket presence (see Russel Wilson) is a must. QBs with no mobility playing behind marginal O-lines are just turning the ball over and getting killed in the NFL.
We really need a paradigm shift away from traditional Bear QBs. The focus should be on talent instead of prototypes.
I agree Taylor doesn’t get enough respect. The guy is a pretty good passer. Jordan Howard had a great season and would only benefit from a dual threat QB under center.
“Athletic Black QB’s”??? Wow way to drop the race card into the game Mr. President!
Uh, but isn’t what ChiSoxCity said right? I know I’ve tended to overlook the passing threats posed by Russell Wilson, Michael Vick (in his Philly years), RGIII at the beginning, and others.
The Bears and bad QBs go together almost as well as the Browns and bad players (ALL positions), bad owners, bad coaches, bad trades, bad front office personnel, bad draft picks, bad free agent signings, and bad extensions.
I’m down for Taylor
So what is the asking price for the 64th pick in the draft whose played 6 quarters and got hurt? Certainly not a top 25 pick.
I agree 100%. The rumored asking price for JG is completely insane. Osweiler had WAY more playing the JG did and was severely overpaid. Other teams should be very careful after seeing that debacle in HOU.
I’m a fan but I’ll agree, it’s a lot to ask for any young player. He’s probably worth more to NE than anyone else right now. He knows the system and has a low cap hit this season. Personally, I’d rather trade him for a proven player, in a position of need if possible.
Using Osweiler as an example hurts your argument though. Yes he had a larger sample size, and it sucked which is why the Houston signing was surprising to so many. He rode the SB wave to a new contract. His agent should be commended. Haha.
JG has shown a lot of upside in his limited sample size, which is why scouts and GMs are interested. Their dilemma is, who’s better for your franchise? A high draft pick that may or may not fare well with a 1rst round price tag, or do they trade the pick for a young QB (with a limited sample size) that shown the ability to execute a pro offense with success. He’s also already gone through the rookie learning curve with the everyday adjustments to being a true professional. My personal Pats homerism aside, I like JG and think he’s got the tools to be a good QB in the NFL. It’s going to be fun to watch how this all plays out.
I’ll take him on a cheap contract til that youngin proves himself. No sample yet
No mention of A.J. McCarron? He is just as good as Jimmy G. if not better. Probably at a much cheaper price.
