After talking with general managers at the league meetings, Tom Pelissero of USA Today doesn’t sense that free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick‘s political beliefs have stopped him from landing a contract. The problem isn’t Kaepernick’s asking price, either; rather, it’s that he needs a specific type of offense to fit his style as a mobile signal-caller who has issues with accuracy and struggles when he has to stay in the pocket. Notably, the 49ers’ new head coach, Kyle Shanahan, indicated to Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle that they’re not bringing Kaepernick back because he’s not right for their scheme. “I think Colin has a certain skill set that you can put a specific offense to it that he can be very successful in,” said Shanahan. “When we first looked at it … that wasn’t necessarily the direction I wanted to go.”
More from around the NFL:
- The Bears swung and missed in attempts to reel in high-profile free agents earlier this month, but chairman George McCaskey is hardly holding that against general manager Ryan Pace. “I’ve been very impressed with [Pace] as a leader, as an evaluator of talent,” McCaskey told John Mullin of CSN Chicago. “And one of the things I’ve been most impressed by with him is the discipline he’s shown just as recently as this free agency period. He didn’t want to overpay guys. Too often, I think, you overpay guys who don’t come through for you and then you have a big hole in your salary cap and you’re behind the 8-ball. So I like the discipline he has shown, the restraint he has shown in free agency.”
- North Carolina State safety Josh Jones visited the Ravens on Thursday, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link). Jones ranks 48th on the board of Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com, so he could be a candidate for Baltimore’s second-round pick (No. 47).
- “Most signs point to” the Redskins retaining safety DeAngelo Hall on a reworked contract, writes JP Finlay of CSN Mid-Atlantic. The 33-year-old is slated to take up over $5MM in cap space next season, though the Redskins would save most of that ($4.25MM) by releasing him. Hall hasn’t stayed healthy in recent years, having missed 31 of 48 regular-season games since 2014, so he wouldn’t have much leverage if the Redskins were to insist on a pay cut.
That was kyle shanahans politically correct way of saying kaps a dirtbag and hes not wanted there…
What makes him a dirtbag?
Apparently you missed the 2016 Season
I did not!
He’s not getting any job in the NFL. He’s not very good anymore and not worth the hassle. Kinda the second coming of Vince Young.
Wow. So now he’s worse than every QB in the league? That’s your argument?
Guys like Mark Sanchez and Nick Foles are still getting contracts in the NFL. Kaepernick is better than both of them, so he should easily be able to get a backup gig. He damn near win a Super Bowl not that long ago, and threw 16 TD passes last year.
I think (and im not saying this is justified) that most teams would rather go down with a QB like Glennon than with Kap, because it’s easier for a GM to sell that to an owner. If your team winds up being terrible with Kap its going to be hard to save your job as a GM, since so many others wont touch him… I also think most teams want their backup QB to speak to the media less than the punter (again not justifying), which might keep him from landing somewhere. So both as a starter and backup he’s got something working against him.
“Guys like Mark Sanchez and Nick Foles are still getting contracts in the NFL.”
Those guys are signing low-money deals to hold clipboards and keep their mouths shut. They’re not expected to play, and there is little fear that they’ll become a distraction. Signing Kapernick causes distraction due to his polarizing character, and that is not something teams will tolerate from a backup quarterback.
“He damn near win a Super Bowl not that long ago, and threw 16 TD passes last year.”
Um, I think time has clearly proven that it was Jim Harbaugh’s coaching/defense that “damn near” won a SB, and very little Kapernick.
Like it or not, Kapernick is just not very good compared to NFL standards. He’s a terrific athlete, but then so is Tim Tebow, but he’s not an NFL quarterback either.
Different team entirely, Harbaugh had nothing to do with last year. Despite the roster being Derek, and the media circus caused by “outraged” mouth breathers, he threw 2200 yards, 16 TDs and 4 picks as a damn backup. If that’s not good “compared to NFL standards” then all but a handful of QBs around the league are below standards, including many starters, so your point is moot.
Meant to say “roster being drek.” Stupid autocorrect.
He wasnt a backup, he started 11 games, and the reason he started the season as a backup is because he couldnt even beat out blaine gabbert of all people.
Hey George, what was the Bears record?
Strauss we get it, the Bulls and the Bears both sucked last year. You really need to stop coming on here and blasting either team. They suck, fans know they suck, they know they suck. We don’t need reminders from a random fan who wants the same thing everyone else does from those two teams. One good thing I guess is I know you won’t be talking smack about the Cubs.
ryan pace doesn’t overpay guys… he just paid glennon 45 million when the only other bid was 8
Essentially a one year deal for 15, do the research bud
No other big huh dummy? So if the Bears did not sign him you are saying there was no one else. Or maybe there were numerous bidders who could not land him dummy
That made zero sense. Try again in English and proper grammar, bro.
He paid him one year 15 million with an option for more. That puts him at 23/24th for highest starting QBS and the guy has the talent to be a good starter. You have no idea how much he could have gotten if he would have hit fa for more than a day.
Seattle is the only team that fits Kaep scheme wise. And they need a back-up QB… but they could just select Seth Russell in the 7th round or sign him after the draft. Much cheaper, less headaches.
Kaepernick is asking for 10m
Sanchez got 1-2M
Daniel got less than that
Kaepernick has a history of starting (albeit, not a great history). Daniels got essentially $7 million (considering what the Saints gave him and what the Eagles owe him) and he’s thrown for less than 500 yards in 6 seasons.
