The Eagles are expected to have some money to spend once they drop a few pricey veterans and they are already keying in one of this year’s biggest free agents. The Eagles have interest in Houston cornerback A.J. Bouye, a person familiar with the situation tells Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com. The two sides made contact on Tuesday, the first day of the legal tampering period.
My updated list of this year’s Top 50 Free Agents has Bouye in the No. 1 spot due to his earning potential. I listed the Eagles as a logical landing spot for him as they look to retool their secondary. The Eagles have parted ways with starter Leodis McKelvin and Nolan Carroll could go elsewhere this month. Bouye would represent a major upgrade to Philly’s defense.
Janoris Jenkins‘ deal from last year has been mentioned as a comp for Bouye. He inked a five-year, $62.5MM contract with the Giants which included a staggering $28.8MM fully guaranteed. Bouye is younger than Jenkins was at the time of signing and the cap is higher than last year, so it’s entirely possible he could match.
The former undrafted free agent had arguably his best season in 2016. The 25-year-old finished the campaign with career-highs in tackles (63) and passes defended (16) while also collecting one sack and one interception. Bouye has only missed four games over the past three seasons.
An undrafted player with only one season as a starter poised to get $60 mil plus with at least $25 mil guaranteed.
Boom or bust situation here!
It’s all about “what have you done for me lately”. He’s 25 years old. He’s a press man coverage guy they need and he’s only missed a minimal amount of games over the past 3 years.
Very few players “peak” at 25 and there’s no reason to believe this guy is going to peak at 25. The best is yet to come.
Where he was drafted, or lack there of, has nothing to do with his ability. Malcom Butler is a shutdown corner and he went undrafted. RGIII was first overall and he’s a bust. Now the one season starter has me worried, and I figure whoever pays him will regret it.
How do they have money to spend? Don’t they only have like 8 million?
People are saying they will cut Ryan Mathews to free up more room
There are players they can trade or cut and end up with plenty of money to get him. Howie knows how to do it.
The Eagles signing a big money corner with question marks in free agency… this sounds familiar.
They could take a 3rd rounder + Kendricks, Kelce, or Curry and make a trade for… Joe Haden.
They would need to cut a few players – Barwin 7.75M, Matthews 4M, and Sproles 4M
Stab in the dark. But Haden was on the block the last 2 years.
