The Cowboys will make a decision on the future of quarterback Tony Romo before training camp, team owner Jerry Jones told reporters, including Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com (Twitter link).
Earlier this week, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported Romo could stick on the Dallas roster past the draft, but Jones’ deadline extends even further. If the Cowboys hold onto Romo until training camp, he may not find a new club until July. With his options already dwindling (the Broncos seem to be content with Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch), Romo may find himself in an untenable situation this summer.
The Texans still stand out as a possible destination for Romo, and the 36-year-old reportedly believes he’ll end up choosing between Houston and retirement. Still, it’s fair to wonder if the Texans — or any other club that may have interest in Romo — is willing to wait until the summer to land its quarterback.
Of course, Romo does have off-the-field options, as both CBS and FOX are courting him as a television analyst.
this is just jerry jones not being able to give up his love for romo. even if dax the better player for the team. it going to take alot for jones to move on from romo
They’re trying to get a team to trade for him so that he won’t have to wait until training camp to start learning a team’s offense
Stupid Jerruh won’t strong arm some one into trading for him. An old, broken-down QB on the decline with a huge contract is worth nothing in a trade.
Is there really a deadline though?
Yes,having a backup qb with a 20+mil cap hit isnt ideal, but he’ll be backup that could start for half the league.and Dak isnt making big money yet.it would be best for Romo to move on as quick as possible, but it might not be in the teams best interest.
I dont think they have a hand to play in any trade negotiations, but at this point in free agency, they dont have to rush into any decision at this point.
I’m a giants fan. I was so impressed with Jerry wanting to do right by Tony and releasing him so he could find a place to continue his career.
Then they just didn’t do it.
Jones does not want romo playing for the Texans. Plain and simple
I’m not a Texans fan or a Cowboys or Romo fan, but I hope Romo goes to the Texans, has a career year, then plays another 5 years better than he ever has, wins multiple Super Bowls, and makes the Texans the most popular team in Texas.
Wish in one hand…I’m sure you know the rest. They could win 5 and they still wouldn’t be more popular.
The Problem with all coming out of college, most will never ever break into the NFL. No matter how great they were in College. The game is like Pineapples and grapes in comparison. I’ll define sometime during the season.
Romo needs to take a pay cut to 3 Million a year and retire right after they win the SB. Which will be before the 2020 season. Maybe, he can play in it. The guy has toughed it out in Dallas and deserves to retire a Cowboy. Dallas is showing promise insuring, other teams signed their Not Wanted Individuals. They need to build their Back six defenders and insure their Drug addicts are clean. Then, it’s on to playing in the SB. Best of luck to the team and it’s fans.
Starting to think he should just stay. Reggie Green says he’s a twenty million dollar backup to a starter making less than one million dollars. And what’s wrong with that? Sucks for Dak but if you’re spending the same amount as the rest of the league for two starter quality players, sounds like a win. If Romo and Jones have such a good relationship then Romo should swallow it and stay. Hell he might even get a ring for doing nothing. Oh wait, that’s he’s been getting paid to do. Sorry Eagles fanboy coming out.
What is romo’s value if broncos or Texans come out of the gate 0-4? Any NFL team loses their starter in preseason or start of season?
According to the Vikings (for Sam Bradford) a first round pick
Nobody is going to trade for Romo. So, it is up to Jerry Jones. If Romo wants to play, why hold him hostage like this? There is no need to do that. Release him. Who cares if he goes to Houston? They aren’t in the NFC. Give him a chance to go to a new team & learn the offense.
Why would nobody trade for him? He is better than how many starters right now? If they hold onto him someone will want him during or start of season. Jones is a billionaire he can hold onto him
Jerry is playing smart. The Texans and Broncos aren’t contenders unless they get romo. The only other serviceable qb is fitz. Romo makes both of those teams Super Bowl contenders
