Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes should be considered a near-lock to be drafted in the first round of the NFL draft, and could be selected within the top three picks depending on how the Browns, 49ers, and Bears address the quarterback position in free agency and/or via trade, according to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com. The Texans, who hold the 25th pick, likely represent the floor for Mahomes, per La Canfora.

Mahomes, 21, has been widely viewed as a Day 2 pick, so the suggestion that he could be chosen not only in the first round, but within the first thirty minutes of the draft, is quite surprising, to say the least. On most draft boards, including that of Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN.com, Mahomes is ranked as the fourth-best quarterback available behind UNC’s Mitch Trubisky, Clemson’s Deshaun Watson, and Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer.
The scouting combine will be significant for Mahomes, says Kiper, while La Canfora agrees Mahomes will be considered a “rising” prospect by the time the draft rolls around. The 2017 quarterback draft class is considered the worst crop of signal-callers since 2013, so it stands to reason that certain QBs will be artificially pushed up boards as the draft approaches. Still, many scouts believe Trubisky is the only passer guaranteed to be selected in the top-five.
Mahomes has served as the Red Raiders’ full-time starter for the past two seasons, and has averaged 4,853 yards and 39 touchdowns during that time.
The kid is a true talent but will need atleast a year in a backup role in my opinion.. Tech doesn’t exactly have a lot of pro concepts
I agree
Be crazy if the patriots got him
I see La Canfora has been hitting on the pipe again. Just put it down, Jason.
Jason is a goon
Who was the last qb from the big 12 to make it as a pro?
Ryan Tannehill and Sam Bradford are solid starters from the Big 12. Some teams would love to have them right now like theses teams in the top 3
This boy really said Ryan tannehill lmao
RGIII also. And I think WVU was in the XII when Geno Smith went there
Dalton?
I don’t think TCU was in the B12 yet when he was there, but you’re definitely correct if they were.
Go watch some unbiased videos that break down his game. After watching him play, they almosy always love him more at the end than they did at the beginning. Kid is tough, smart, elusive, and has an absolute cannon for an arm. He is raw, but a legit talent and a very good kid.
His ability to throw on the run is severely underappreciated.
Who’s to say if any of them can adapt to the NFL quickly? If Mahomes works hard enough and studies he can start day one.
Unfortunately it doesn’t work that way. Out of this group though, you are right that none of them have been learning NFL type concepts. However, I do think that when you get to the NFL, that backgground of never learning that stuff before going 100 mph in the NFL can never be recovered. It’s just a matter of what he does well (along with these other guys) can overcome what he will always lack. You see it in Mariota and Cam Newton both. They both have overcome it with athleticism and a quicker release in Mariotta’s case, but they both still take a ton more sacks than players who come from a more traditional background like a Jameis Winston who makes a average pass blocking line look better than it is. That’s why Cleveland is so far behind the eightball in this draft because allof these QBs will have this problem, but Darnold who will probably be coming out next year will not. But can you survive another first pick type of year if you’re that coaching staff?
The Bears will approach this draft and their QB need they way they always do. Which means they will fubar it, like they always do.
I’m a Tech fan, so I really want the kid to succeed. If he gets taken this early I’m afraid it’s not going to happen though. He needs to learn how to hand off the ball after their offense averaged nearly 60 pass attempts and he really needs to sit long enough to clean up his footwork when throwing. That arm strength with consistent mechanics could be a nightmare for NFL defenses.
Man I know that QB is the vital spot these teams gotta stop reaching. Look at last season: Rams look to have wasted number one pick on Goff. Wentz showed promise but nothing more than an average starter. Cowboys patiently waited for Dak and he played the same conservative and safe football that brought him success in college. Other examples of reaches, Paxton Lynch, anyone the Jets draft. I’m just saying it’s rare that these guys that had amazing stats for mediocre teams come out to be great qb’s.
Wentz was hurt largely by the fact that his receivers couldn’t catch anything. Also I think it’s still early to call Lynch a reach. Broncos needed a QB but were also willing to groom Lynch for a year or two…nothing wrong with that. And in Dallas’ case, while I’m not trying to take anything away from his play this year (as it was good and more impressive than anyone expected) it does help to play behind arguably one of the top 2 O-lines in the league and to have a quality RB playing behind said O-line.
1,000% correct
I’m tired of people making this excuse to knock Prescott. If that line made him, what happpend to the Dallas backups last year. They all stunk and went 4-12. He far exceeded what I was capable of, and I’m able to admit that. They didn’t hide him, and every time I thought he’d crumble, he answered the bell, most recently in that playoff game where he was the last reason they lost that game. Tip your cap to Jerry and his crew. They nailed that one because they were reportedly enamored with him all throughout the draft process and then got him, and he was as good as they thought he would be.
Anyone drafting a QB this year better have a veteran QB to start for a year to give the rookie’s some grooming
I c mahomes as a Prescott type impact. Good arm solid mechanics. Would like to c him get to the Browns in the top of the 2nd round. I think hue would do a great job with him.
Prescott was blessed by having the best O-line in football. One of the best in recent history along with a stud running back. These college shotgun qb’s rarely seen to be able to make the adjustments. Specifically ones that didn’t even have Heisman consideration
Sorry, but his mechanics are the biggest knock on his game. Have you actually seen him play? They’re not awful, but they’re not good or consistent either.
The problem with most college spread offense QBs is that teams fall in love with their stats and rush them to start or the player truly isn’t as good as his college stats say. Whoever drafts Mahomes has to give him at least a year to figure out the system and get used to playing at the pro level.
No, I don’ think anyone factors them in actually. I’ve heard people comparing him to Derek Carr and Jim Garrapollo because of his similar quick release along with his physical attributes because to be fair, all of these QBs are coming from a form of the 1-read spread option that pumps up stats. Therefore they’re looking at the attributes and seeing what they like from them. With him, Kizer, and Trubiski, it’s the size. With him, it’s the release. With Watson, I’ve said it’s his ability to stare down the barrel and either take a hit or elude it while keeping his eyes down field. But this is the ultimate game of projection with all of them. One thing about the Carr comparisons for Mahomes is that Carr did play in a pro concept offense under Pat Fitzgerald before he got switched into a spread his last year at Fresno. Not sure about Garropollo, but I doubt it was a pro offense either.
I would also like to see this kid drafted by the Brown’s. He has a lot of upside, and with Hue Jackson’s qb knowledge…..this may be the qb that the Brown’s have been searching for since 1999! “GO BROWN’S”
He’d be the only other one besides Watson that I would consider, but that being said, no way I’d draft him that high. I wouldn’t even draft him with Cleveland’s second first rounder. While his release is nice and he has the physical tools, it’s going to be a long term project to get him on the field, and you don’t spend first rounders on players like that.
