The Redskins have made little progress in extension talks with quarterback Kirk Cousins, and the club is now “wondering” if they could acquire a veteran signal-caller such as the Cowboys’ Tony Romo if Cousins were traded, according to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report (video link).

Clearly, a Mr. Romo Goes To Washington scenario is fraught with potential — and possibly deal-breaking — hurdles. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones almost certainly wouldn’t trade a viable quarterback to a division rival, and would seemingly be especially loathe to do so with Romo, with whom Jones has a personal relationship. Romo, for what it’s worth, expects to be cut rather dealt, but even a release could come with a tacit agreement that Romo not sign with an NFC East club like the Redskins.
A Romo acquisition would be preceded by a Cousins trade, per Cole, who reported last month that the 49ers would be among the clubs interested in bringing Cousins aboard. San Francisco would be open to trading the No. 2 overall pick to land Cousins, whom the Niners view as their Plan A at quarterback. For such a deal to go down, the Redskins would first to need to franchise Cousins in order to retain his rights, then work out a trade with the 49ers that would be officially consummated on March 9 (or anytime thereafter).
Romo, 36, is due base salaries of $14MM, $19.5MM, $20.5MM in each of the next three seasons, but none of that money is guaranteed. The Bills have mentioned as a potential suitor for Romo, as have the Broncos, while Denver, Houston, Arizona, and Kansas City have been identified as Romo’s preferred destinations.
Cousins way overrated…perhaps Skins become players for Garropalo
How is he “way” overrated? He’s put up top five numbers in a few categories.
If Cousins was a consensus top 5 QB, then why hasn’t WSH signed him to a long term deal. The fact that they aren’t is speaking volumes…
It would be hilarious if the Skins dump Cousins and wind up with somebody like Cutler instead.
Pretty much a wash. They won’t go to the next level with either
Redskins will end up kicking themselves if they get rid of Cousins just to join the dozen or so teams chasing the small handfull of QBS. Available Don’t make sense .Or maybe they just realy don’t like this kid for what ever reason. It’s like they just don’t want him.
They don’t want him at $25 million per year because he’s not a top 10 QB.
Hahahah the hell would he want to go to the redskins. He wants to play for a Super Bowl contending team, and their top 2 wideouts are most likely leaving.
I think to many people are making assumptions of the situation with cousins. I believe the Redskins are keeping a tight lip so they can make a decision. The same goes for free agency and the drafting.
Agreed,110%.
Don’t you think if WSH really wanted Cousins they would have him under a long term deal already? What’s there to be tight lipped about? They will either tag him or give him a multi year. The lack of commitment to Cousins says it all.
It’s not that they haven’t chosen to sign him to a long term deal, if you read the article from a few days ago a Cousins is refusing to sign a deal until after the franchise tag deadline.
They Didn’t sign him long term after 1st tag. Didn’t sign him in the offseason. Doesn’t even offer a long term deal. The fact a deal wasn’t even offered says it all.
If course Kirk would say that but I bet he world sing a different tune if the deal came.
The idea a deal hasn’t been offered is all the facts that are required to know the real situation. If they loved Kirk, a tag for a 2nd time wouldn’t be a conversation. Kirk would have signed a new multi year deal already….
Two things WSH could do, in theory, if they really wanted this Romo thing to happen.
They have about $67m in cap
1. Sign Ron Leary. Reunite with Callahan and give WSH a top end OL on paper, with Williams, Leary, Scherff.
2. Sign Terrence Williams. Only to a deal to match the length romo is there. He’s not a WR1.
I am a Cowboys fan too. This would make WSH offense lethal….I would be ticked lol
Free agency qb is ugly. Dak Prescott is one in a million so you can’t bank on rookie qb coming in and having success. Redskins would regret not locking up cousins.
I am not so sure about that. One thing really good GMs (as much as I hate to admit Scotty is a damn good GM/talent evaluator) do is NOT pay someone a $ amt just because the “market” says you have to. Look at Pats in having $71m in cap yet traded Collins and Jones bc they felt they were NOT worth the “market” value. It is responsible spending. And no matter how it is sliced, Cousins is NOT a top 10 QB, is NOT worth a deal worth $50+m in guarantees. Scotty is a smart guy. He knows it is better to make the rest of the team better than overpay one guy that can ultimately handicap your ability to make more needed additions to the roster later.
Look at the many QBs who signed big deals only to stink. Everyone is hyping Dak a little too much (Yes i am a Cowboys fan!) I see “re-drafts” where he is moved to 1st overall….LMFAO!!! You think Dak has anywhere near the success in CLE, STL, NYJ? HECK NO!!!!!! Its a joke how people cannot translate that Dak was put in a situation to be EASED into the team, a la Russell Wilson. Russ came to a run dominant team with an awesome D. No pressure for him to carry the load and EASE into being a NFL QB. Russ couldnt get passed his 2nd progression for the 1st two years in the league…
I think Scotty would rather spend $20m on TWO top end CBs or pass rushers, rather than sign Cousins to a long term deal. I am sorry but again the fact that Scotty HASNT given Cousins a long term deal is speaking volumes to me. He is there everyday, talks to the coaches, and has far more knowledge of the situation than any beat writer can ever have. Why hasnt he signed him to a long term deal with all this internal knowledge???? That tells me that the the $ value and talent value are not equaling out for Scotty
So packers shouldn’t pay Rodgers, Falcons Ryan , or pats Brady? Sure hope those 2 cb intercept a lot of passes for Scotty . I’m a Cowboys fan and put Dak up for trade and see what he gets in return. Redskins can get cutler or mark Sanchez maybe johnny Football and see how they do next year. Qb kinda important position .
So you put cousins in the same class as those qbs you named? Really? Cmon now. He don’t sniff their draws….
Sure QB important but forcing it causes more issues than fixes. How many teams over pay/reach on a qb? How many years does it set them back?
I mean look at Dallas. Romo, undrafted and Dak 4th Rd. However, having a complete offense allows less pressure to perform at a high level early. Dak can grow into his position…not be like all the qbs taken early who crap the bed like Ponder, Locker just to name a few….but there are tons of examples of early QBS sucking bc the team around them is trash.
Redskins pick 17th. What qb is left? I don’t put cousins in the same tier as Rodgers and company but if redskins let cousins walk and get weak qb then defenses will bring house or put 8 in the box and redskins won’t be moving ball all year. Since we are both Cowboys fans that helps us but hate to be a redskins fan if he leaves.
Don’t need to draft a qb this year either. That’s another mistake teams make, as previously stated….reaching in the draft.
Just bc there would be a need doesn’t mean it had to be filled with a long term answer immediately. That’s what puts teams in bad situations. We didn’t see Dak coming but we got him. We did a great job taking BPA in 1st RD and that’s why we have All Pros for 1st Rd picks 5 of 7 years, w/ Claiborne and Jones being the only ones since Tyron Smith not to be named all pros.
Point is we built a roster and didn’t force the qb, which led to Dak. Can’t force the issue sometimes….
But we had tony Romo. If mark Sanchez was our qb last 3 years then Frederick, martin and Elliott wouldn’t have been drafted we would have went for a qb . If redskins let cousins walk they will be cellar dwellers for a decade
That’s a nice thought but reality is we had Romo. We put ourselves in this situation, even if a little luck was invloved. Sanchez was only brought in bc of injury. He would had been our 4th qb and likely not on the roster. Romo, Moore, Dak….that was the order opening camp.
I meant redskins don’t have a Romo Cowboys wouldn’t have worked if prescott hadn’t. Been a stud. If Moore was qb Cowboys would have been 8-8 or less. Redskins let cousins walk they will be 8-8 for years to come
WSH is 9-7 and 8-7-1 last two years, with Cousins….not far from 8-8 with him already.
Just philosophical differences. You would rather give him a 5 yr/$100m+, with north of $60 guaranteed, whether he is worth the price tag or not. I don’t think he is. That’s over 1/3 available cap.
I would rather sign Leary, Williams, AND Romo for that entire $20m per year salary, with plenty left over. Shoot, give me Hoyer or even McCoy as a 2 year bridge QB until I get one I want. Build the team. No clue who becomes a free agent next year. I keep drafting for the OL and front seven, by getting BPA.
Then if you stink one year, like we did, you are drafting at the top of every Rd for an already sound team. It will only result in good things, i.e Zeke and Dak.
Just agree to disagree…and that’s ok! Lol.
I won’t hold a franchise hostage for a qb that isn’t worth the price tag. It’s irresponsible spending.
I AGREE WITH YOU THAT COUSINS IS NOT WORTH THAT KIND OF MONEY.BUT IT’S THE MARKET THAT WARRANTS HE MAKES THAT KIND OF MONEY.I’M A REDSKINS FAN BUT I WOULD TRADE HIM TO SAN FRAN AND GIVE MCCOY A CHANCE OR MAKE A TRADE FOR JIMMY G.FROM NEW ENGLAND.COUSINS HAS NOT SHOWN HE CAN WIN THE BIG GAMES.HE LOST 3 GAMES THAT WOULD HAVE PUT THE REDSKINS IN THE PLAYOFFS
