Myles Garrett is a candidate to picked first-overall in the upcoming draft, but the Texas A&M defensive end is hoping a specific team with a late first-rounder will make a deal to select him. In a video published on ESPN.com, Garrett urged Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to make a deal to acquire the talented defensive lineman.
“I’m speaking to you, Jerry,” Garrett said (via Nate Ulrich of Ohio.com). “Mr. [coach Jason] Garrett, make it happen. Dak Prescott is leading our team right now. I need you to take Tony Romo, take a couple picks and give them to Cleveland so you can pick me up. Please. I’d love to play in Dallas. Just make it happen.”
Of course, following those comments, Garrett had to backtrack and clarify that he’d be fine being selected by the Browns with the top pick in the draft.
“People might say they’re this, they’re that or I made a comment about cold weather and they kind of put it toward Cleveland,” Garrett explained. “It doesn’t matter to me. I’ll play wherever they put me, and it’s about your mindset. If you go out there with a mindset that you’re going to turn things around, you can make that contagious and people start to believe in it, you can turn into a winning program wherever you go.”
Let’s take a look at some other notes pertaining to this year’s draft class…
- While Alabama’s Cam Robinson and Wisconsin’s Ryan Ramczyk were previously considered to be the best offensive tackles in the draft, Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller believes Utah lineman Garett Bolles is now the top prospect at the position. While the 24-year-old’s age may hurt his draft stock, Miller points to Robinson’s lack of production and Ramczyk’s injury concerns as reasons why Bolles could be the first offensive tackle selected. In fact, the writer believes the Utah lineman could be taken in the first 10 or 15 picks.
- While there are questions regarding the top quarterback prospect in this year’s draft, one general manager told Miller that UNC signal-caller Mitch Trubisky is “a top-five lock.” While Trubisky is competing with Deshaun Watson and DeShone Kizer to be the first quarterback selected, Miller believes most teams regard the UNC product as the top prospect at the position.
- Alex Marvez of The Sporting News points out (via Twitter) that only 16 quarterbacks were invited to this year’s NFL Scouting Combine. There are generally 19 or 20 signal-callers who participate in the event, and Marvez believes the low numbers are indicative of the “projected quality at the position.”
- Despite some recent talk to the contrary, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter) says that many teams already view Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon as undraftable. The offensive weapon certainly has the skill, as he finished this past season with 1,274 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on only 187 carries. Of course, troubling off-the-field issues have clouded Mixon’s draft status.
- Ole Miss wide receiver Damore’ea Stringfellow was not invited to the combine, reports Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com (via Twitter). Stringfellow pleaded guilty to assault following a 2014 altercation, and he was also charged with disorderly conduct in early 2015. The wideout finished this past season with 46 catches for 716 yards.

Lots of talk for someone who hasn’t proved anything. Garrett better hope he’s good or it would make him look like an even bigger idiot.
Garrett just doesn’t want to play for the Browns. Not that I could really blame him, but I’ve never been a fan of players coming out and actively saying they’d want to go to a specific team or saying that they didn’t weren’t going to play for a specific team if drafted by them.
Actually, most players who are drafted don’t care, all they care about is being drafted by a team and making their dream come true. Please stop being a moron and accept the fact Garrett will make the Browns a great team
Garrett will not make the browns a good team. He will help them but a de is generally not a team changer. In football you need a good players at almost every position And obvi Garrett would rather play for the cowboys than the browns He obvi would rather go somewhere else besides the browns. Who wouldn’t
How am I being a moron? Garrett alone will not make the Browns a great team. And my comment about “not that I could really blame him” was the fact that the Browns were terrible last year and terrible the last few years as well. I’m a Jags fan so it’s not like I’m sitting on a high throne or anything and if a player said he didn’t want to go to the Jags either, I wouldn’t blame them either.
And I agree, most players either don’t care or don’t tell the media that they care. There are plenty of big name players who have however. John Elway and Eli Manning are obvious examples. They carved out a place in history, but both of them are petty for the fact that they didn’t want to be drafted by a specific team. Same goes for Garrett.
How many times are we going to have to read the exact same thing about Joe Mixon? Some say he’s undraftable some say he’s draftable. This is the exact same stuff that was said when first declared for the draft.
Mixon should join the team with Shawn Oakman, Ray Rice, Greg Hardy, Jonny Manziel, and the other undraftable/unsignable guys wasting their talent away.
can’t blame a guy for not wanting to play in cleveland…
What do you know about Cleveland? Are you from the area or do you just want to jump on the bash bandwagon? There’s more to our great city than just an unsuccessful football team. What’s sad is the great heritage the Browns once had is all but zilch, except for the record books.
I don’t think he’s referring to the city, I think he’s referring to the Browns, who are the biggest joke of a franchise in professional sports, and it starts at the top with Jim Haslem. That’s why no one would want to play in Cleveland. I don’t mind the city.
When they inevitably turn it around those players will be kings though. If I’m the #1 overall talent I consider it a challenge with the ultimate payoff.
And the Browns team with records in the records book resides in Baltimore. This franchise needs a complete overhaul. Better management leads to better players, not vice versa. Look at the teams in the post season this year. Common theme, commitment to building from the ground up. Solid coaching staffs with more than capable offensive and defensive lines that make life considerably better for the skill players.
I’m interested to see how Cleveland’s new management will do. Obviously the results were terrible this year, but also no one expected them to be a serious competitor. I say give the current management group another two or three years before considering getting rid of them.
Nah since last year the record books are zilch too finally hit enough losses to make the Browns a bellow .500 franchise
I really hope the 9ers do not draft a qb, use the first pick to either trade for Garapollo or draft the best player available that’s not a Qb and sign a QB just to get us by for a year.
Would be a mistake to trade their first round pick for Garappolo. The most they should be willing to give would be the second rounder. If they’re able to acquire a later pick in the first round somehow (I would say anything after the top 15 picks), then maybe trade that pick. A top 10 pick is too much for Garappolo considering his track record.
Mixon should have stayed in school for 2 more years, stayed out of trouble, possibly win a Heisman and maybe by then some of this stuff would have blown over a bit. To declare a month after the video went public?? Seems like he got some bad advice, or didn’t listen to the advice given to him.
