Josh McCown, who was recently released by the Browns, would endorse the team trading for Jimmy Garoppolo, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com writes.
“I’ve seen him on tape because we had a common opponent in Miami,” McCown said. “He made some high level throws and did some things that would get you excited about his ability to maybe carry a franchise. That’s definitely on the tape.”
Garoppolo, reportedly, is a leading target of the Browns’ front office this offseason. The 25-year-old made two starts while Tom Brady was suspended last season, completing 43 of 63 pass attempts for 502 yards with four touchdowns and zero interceptions. That’s not a large sample size to go on, but execs around the league have been raving about the youngster for some time now.
Here’s more from the AFC North:
- Will the Ravens ask Dennis Pitta to take a pay cut after a solid season? He was willing to do it last year because he missed an entire season of action, but it’s not clear if he’ll go for a repeat of that after a quality 2016, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com writes. If the Ravens ask him to take a pay cut and he says no, they could gain $3.3MM by releasing him. There’s also $3MM to be saved if they release Benjamin Watson, but Hensley seems to think they’ll exercise patience and see what they have in the veteran.
- Bengals cornerback Adam Jones is getting more time to work on alcohol and anger issues before anything happens with his criminal case, The Associated Press writes. Now, court records show the date for possible grand jury action has been delayed from Friday until March 23. Jones was arrested for three misdemeanors and a felony last month after he assaulted a man, kicked police officers, and spit on a nurse in jail. The Bengals, understandably, are unsure about whether they want him back.
- The Steelers want to re-sign linebacker Lawrence Timmons, though they have higher priorities to assess first.
They should have bailed on Pitta long ago, ideally, not even signing him to an extension in the first place. His “good” season this year was built on a tremendous number of 4 yard receptions and dump offs from an average QB. He can’t stretch the field, no YAC, and is a mediocre safety net when we already have Watson, and two young TEs. No need for Dennis.
Wasn’t Pitta signed before his hip injuries (I know there was two, can’t remember if they resigned him before or after the first injury). If it was after, then that was a mistake. But if it was before, then there was little they could do since he would’ve had dead money on their cap. At that point, might as well keep him and instead of paying him to play elsewhere. Pre-injury, he was a pretty good TE, but those injuries really hurt his future. They also only have Watson and their other two TEs because of his injury.
I am 99% sure it was after the first but before the second. This signing reminds me of the O’s signing Brian Roberts to an extension. Productive when healthy, fan favorite, but glaring red flags. Neither turned out successful.
Has anyone confirmed that New England is even considering trading Goropollo
Well Brady is rumored wanting to play for 4-5 more years. Garoppolo is a free agent after 2017 and the Pats apparently like their 3rd stringer. If they get the price they want he will be gone.
BB is open trading anyone, anytime…..except Brady.
I don’t like what the Pat’s want the price is too high. With the crop coming out next year. QB Browning- Washington huskies looks like the real deal for next year.
Embarrassing the PacMan is even in the league after past indiscretions. The NFL needs a tougher stance on violent crime. Zero tolerance. This is an entertainment industry and allowing players to simply have suspensions and fines contributes to the deterioration of the moral fiber for those young people looking up to the players. ZERO TOLERANCE.
